The Niners have the second overall selection in the NFL draft and they could use it on a passer. The group of draft-eligible quarterbacks includes Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer.

If Shanahan and Lynch are not impressed with that group or don’t want to wait for a young quarterback to develop, they could attempt to trade for Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Or they perhaps could try to get Washington’s Kirk Cousins, who is eligible for free agency but could be franchise-tagged again by the Redskins. Perhaps the 49ers, it has been speculated, could use the No. 2 pick in a Cousins deal if he’s tagged by the Redskins, who would be entitled to two first-rounders for allowing Cousins to leave but would have the option of accepting different terms.

Yes the Niners could accept different term than the cap terms for Cousins....that how I read that.

The antecedent of who is clearly the Redskins in both cases. This clearly refers to the Redskins having the option of accepting different terms than two first-rounders. Whether it's correct or not is another story. This is not saying the Niners could accept different terms.

Why would a free agent negotiate a sign and trade deal? What incentive does the player have to help a team that doesn't want to pay him?

Not a fan of hearing or seeing that spectacle. Two fairly ironic things happened directly after his ref assault:
1. He threw an INT to end the game; and
2. A couple hours later, Cousins was a guest speaker at Woodlands Church to discuss his faith and relationship with God....

I have always been fans of players that are ultra-competitive in EVERY respect. Similarly to how Michael Jordan was caught cheating while play go-fish with his college roommate's grandmother. That type of characteristic can be VERY helpful in pro sports. HOWEVER, what I didn't like hearing is that Cousins didn't apologize to the ref afterwards. That is concerning.

Yes. Technically correct ... I think. Of course, being compensated with two picks for losing such a guy amounts to trading a player for picks even though it's not a "trade."

I think it is still open to question whether or not the compensation for a non-exclusive FT player is negotiable. Mark Maske seems to claim it is in the Post today.
