This one is RIDICULOUS...! One site predicts we draft Jameison...? WOW

5. Washington Redskins

Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

The Redskins seem to have opened up to the possibility of getting rid of Robert Griffin III and likely need his replacement. While his Rose Bowl performance was shockingly bad, Winston is still the second best quarterback in this year's class (if he declares). Winston is more of a pro-style passer than Griffin was coming out of college and is also a fellow Heisman winner. It would be interesting to see if Jay Gruden is able to develop him.

What site is predicting that?

It was a Philly site, can't remember. I'm sure they just want us to fail again and again....LOL

Here's another:

5. Redskins: OLB Shane Ray, Missouri
Explosive pass rusher who could replace Brian Orakpo. Coach Jay Gruden can get an offensive tackle in the second round.

If there is a true open competition among the three quarterbacks Griffin doesn't have a chance in hell at winning it. McCoy and Cousins both have their obvious deficiencies, but they at least understand the basics of playing the qb position. That Griffin, as a pro player, is still having trouble making proper drop backs (i.e., 3 versus 5 step) shows just how far he is away from being ready to beat anybody out, let alone win a competition.

First, McCoy is not under contract for 2015, so unless we re-sign him, he won't be part of any competition. Second, I'd say Griffin has a decent chance of winning the competition (certainly better than you're giving him credit for).

Sean Taylor was a freak athlete and football player. Not surprising he broke the usual rules about how high most safeties are drafted.

Also I'm not sure that idea about safeties and draft value is so true anymore. There are SO many teams hurting at the safety position right now, not just the Skins.

btw here's Kiper's pick at #5 in his mock draft today (1/15):

Randy Gregory
Washington Redskins (4-12)
COLLEGE: Nebraska
Class: Jr
HT: 6-6
WT: 245
POS: DE
Analysis: Gregory is the type of pass-rushing talent that can transcend systems. Long, athletic and highly explosive coming off the edge, he's a little undersized as a classic 4-3 defensive end and could play in space a little better as a 3-4 outside linebacker. But he can flat out cause disruption -- not just as a pass-rusher, mind you, because heâ??ll also play with good leverage against the run and make plays in the backfield. Washington should be purely in the "take a great football player" category, and Gregory fits the bill and can make them better as a rookie.

Randy G. would be great but if he goes before our pick then:

PICK NO.
5
WAS
LEONARD WILLIAMS DEUSC
The Redskins need help in several areas, and Williams would be a steal at this spot. He can dominate versus the run and pass.

Deadskins-- to even put Collins in the same sentence as Taylor is crazy. Collins is a good player, not a great one.

Taylor played free safety for us, which is a more valuable commodity than a strong safety. You can find strong safeties later in the draft.

We ain't picking a safety.

I was not comparing the two, just pointing out that a SS can be worth the #5 pick in the draft, which you said there was "NO WAY."

Sean was not a strong safety.

AND...let me say, no GOOD organization picks a strong safety 5th in the draft, nor a FB, or a Center, or a ILB. Some positions are not worthy of that pick.

I'd be on board with that! Glad to see fans looking at that #5 picking and talking about d-line/o-line.

My preference is:

1) Sign a RT in Free Agency.

2) Pick either Gregory from Nebraska or Williams from USC in 1st.

3) Pick a RG or free Safety in 2nd.

4) Pick a DL in 3rd.

5) Pick a strong safety in 4th.

That would be unlike Snyder and the first 15 years!

My preference is:

1) Sign a young, veteran safety in free agency.
2) Trade down to acquire more picks or pick the best player available in the 1st.
3) Trade down to acquire more picks or pick the best player available in the 2nd.
4) Pick the best player available in the 3rd.
5) Pick the best player available in the 4th.
6) Pick the best player available in the 5th.
7) Pick the best player available in the 6th.
8) Pick the best player available in the 7th.

yeah, we all wanna be "GM" for a day. I don't really care. I think Scot and coaching team will DO the right things in terms of draft and FA.

We have nowhere to but up! (I hope.) I agree with you though - I think we have the right guy in charge of the draft. I'm going to trust this year that he's going to pick the right guys when our turn comes up.

I feel a little more opinionated about free agency. fredp45 wrote that he would prefer to take a RT in FA. That sounds great, but the list of free agent right tackles this year is SLIM and the few guys who might be decent options may still end up signing with their current teams.

I still think safety is the position where we have to find help in free agency regardless of what we do in the draft. Does anybody want to see Ryan Clark back there again next year?

Im betting we will have some disappointed fans this off season. SM is going to follow that BPA approach, and some positions wont get addressed as well as people had hoped, and some positions we seemingly arent in need of will.

Its going to be important fot everyone to realize that roster additions will need to be looked at throughout 2-3 years and not just 1.

+1 - I also like how he's indicated that he's going to take his time and he will be looking at the scouting department and how well it does through the draft - Scot is not going to make any quick decisions in this area but he's giving notice that he expects more from them

as we get closer I am hoping we can trade down but there are other franchises around the 5 pick looking to do the same ...

taking Williams or Scherff out of Iowa would not be a bad thing at 5 at all ...

There is a new sheriff in town, and this is exactly opposite to how he runs a draft. Prepare yourself for disappointment.

I think we should draft Landon Collins.

While I believe our first priority is to fix our Oline and Dline. We already have a pro Bowl left tackle and I dont believe in drafting a right tackle or guard in the first round especially in the top five picks.

Top ten picks should go to true game changers and future hall of famers or potential hall of famers.

Williams out of USC would be my first choice but most likely gone by the time we pick. So it makes sense for us to add a big playmaker in our weak secondary. Shane Ray looks like a force too but we have good linebackers already. So to me it makes sense to get Collins.

The free agent market is also loaded with quality guards and some defense nose tackle options as well. So its looking more and more like we probably will take Collins with the no. 5 pick.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Actually this has been EXACTLY what's happened the last 15 years. Loved the Two WR and One TE in the second round draft. Hey we needed some pass catchers

hmmm, I don't think Collins will be TBA at #5 (though I like his play)
I think we pull the trigger on an Olineman or DE/LB

Yeah collins is good, and would fill one of the biggest needs on the team.... but he isnt worth a #5 pick. Odds are based on the players there we will end up with a LB, D or O lineman using the BPA strategy.

The real unknown factor with Scot is he talks with coachs trainers and team mates of people on his board, and weighs things that we dont have information on, so who knows what kind of surprises we have in store.

What we do know though, he likes big guys, and has a higher value on linemen than other gms and scouts do, he has stated numerous times its the guys in the trenches that dictate a game for you, so that could be a hint to his methods for us

Scot M. does not have a very good idea yet about whom he's pickin'. He's gotta see what GMs before him do. Then he'll look at his board. If he has an outlier BPA, bam - gone. If he has a few guys in a tie, he'll likely lean toward value vs. immediate need.

Once the dust settles after day 2, he'll know who he may want to target in free agency. Those guys will be big, under 30, consistent, and with upside - probably their 2nd contracts.
