Quarterback

#8 Rex Grossman

We should know enough about these guys now, Grossman was a former first round pick, Beck and Clemens former second rounders. All have started in the NFL before, but only Grossman has been a full season starter. Actually a lot of experience in this group, but not a lot of skill. IMO, pretty much the most we could hope for from these guys is someone to be a game manager. We just need someone to come in and not throw picks.

Wouldn't be surprised if Shanahan only carries 2 QBs this year.

Skinsfan55 wrote:Running Back

Shanahan has a great track record with running backs, but that's always seemed to be because of his dominant offensive lines. Still, we saw flashes from Torain who had multiple 100 yard gains. Tim Hightower is new, and he's show flashes of brilliance too. Both guys are made for this system. Hopefully they work out. Helu and Royster are rookies, hopefully they stick around for a while. It's a crowded backfield though, and Keiland Williams proved to be a useful goalline back in 2011.

Williams has been switched to FB

Young has been getting more of the work, so it looks like the end of the line for Mike Sellers. I don't expect Sellers to break camp with the team.

Sellers has been moved to TE

This is a crowded position and there's a few more I didn't list. Moss, Armstrong and Gaffney all had more than 800 yds receiving last season. Hankerson and Kelly look great in camp and Banks is on the roster bubble since he's limited to returning kicks.

Looks like the WR corps may be a position of strength for Beck and Grossman. These guys all just go to work, no complaining, and with the possible exception of Stallworth character is a huge plus for everyone.

I doubt they keep Stallworth and Gaffney nor do I think they'll go with seven WRs

Skinsfan55 wrote:Tight End

There's a couple camp bodies in there too, but these are the two guys to beat. Cooley and Davis are arguably the best TE combo in football. One position where we have strength for sure.

Logan Paulson and Sellers will battle for the 3rd spot, They will carry three and Logan will be the third TE again this year. One of the two on your list might be traded

The line is pretty thin, especially on the interior. Seems like with a shortened offseason and a weak FA market Shanahan went for continuity and familiarity with the scheme to try and get results. I don't know if it's gonna work. I like Williams and Brown a lot, but there's very little depth at all, to go with a weak interior. Maybe we'll see one or two of the interior line step up. As for who makes the team as a reserve, I don't see an obvious choice as a backup center but that could get sorted out. The rest will be hammered out in camp.[/b]

Pretty thin is right Capers has been lining up a guard so far in camp and Hurt has look pretty good but who knows how the line will shake out.

All in all you've put together a pretty good list other than the position changes.

Your use of the word "possible" concerning the exception of Stallworth's character is duly noted; however see the thread link below for the discussion about Stallworth's character.

Some may judge (and I know you are not) that what he did makes him a bad character for life, but as far as football is concerned, Donte does not fit the label of a questionable character or bad character guy.

I agee with 1nik, you put a pretty good list together. One area with my attention is TE. I love Sellers as a special teams guy. I believe that the coaches love Paulsen's work ethic. No way, you keep four. I agree with 1 nik that a tight end might get traded (I'm not ruling out Davis since he has the most value and we need picks to our QB next year) - TE goes down for another team and I think Davis is gone.

I also think that Banks will get traded if they can't incorporate him more into the offense.

Yeah, I can understand it was most likely a horrible accident, I just wanted to qualify the statement so someone didn't come in and go "ZOMG! HE KILLED SOMEONE!!!! WHARRRRGBL!!!"

Oakland gambled, thinking they would be able to re-sign their TE and he left....

Bank sat out practice yesterday with a swollen knee (same knee he had surgery on last year) no sure what they can get for a WR that has a bad knee and doesn't play WR

Maybe we won't have to wait untl a TE goes down. Was Jason good buddies with Davis. They had a good connection in 2009.

With Banks, I am assuming that he has a big pre-season returning kicks and doesn't fumble the ball. That is the only way that he has value.

I thought that you might be covering yourself for those folks. I didn't see any posts from you on the Stallworth thread. Perhaps, you did read it and saw some of the comments and decided to cover yourself. :)

Redskins are signing OC/G Donovan Raiola per a source.

Best I can tell he has played in one NFL game, that was with Tampa last season

28 year old journeyman who has been with 7 NFL teams since 2006.

Well we still need a solid QB. We have question marks on the offensive line. Trent Williams was great for a rookie last year. I expect him to be even better. Our offensive line was better then the year before. So I expect even more progress this year.

Running backs could also be a concern. We have a big unknown in Helu. His career at Nebraska was promising and he did produce. Torrain returns from a solid year but finished it injured. So at least we have some depth now.
We may have a two headed monster in Torrain and Helu. Hey theres some reason for optimism with the RBs.

WR also looks promising. Hankerson had a great career in College. He was also great in the Senior Bowl. We resigned Santana Moss and Cooley and Davis well are both very good. Armstrong was a solid contributor and we are still waiting to see what Kelly can do.

The biggest concern is obviously the QB. Just cross your fingers is all I can say. While Grossman can be productive at times. He always seems to throw the pick in the most critical situations. Beck... I havent a clue what John Beck can do. I have seen some highlight tapes of college but have also seen atrocious play while he was in Miami. Like I said just cross your fingers and hope the kid works his butt off.

Williams was ranked as one of the worse RT's in the league last year. By the way, the only player we had on the OL that ranked as high as "average" was Montgomery.
