au contrair - I think Beck IS a good QB - BUT, he is 30 years old

Canes, do you think Beck's going to be the starting QB here in the first regular season game?

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me at all if he starts for us next year. If I was betting money, I would put it on Grossman starting Game 1, but considering how much of a mess our qb situation is nothing would surprise me at this point. If I had to guess....McNabb gets shipped off or cut, Grossman re-signs, we draft a qb.

welcome to the dark side

I actually could see Beck starting here given that I'm sure we'll find a way to move McNabb - even that is VERY iffy given the mess the NFL is in ....

Grossman is most likely going to get the job but ....

He is one of 63 players on a 80 man roster that would generally carries about 100+ players about this time of year. In other words.... Half the team IS gone

Not a 1st time starter, but Steve Young played two god-awful seasons for the Bucs before he was declared a bust and traded. The 49'ers saw something in him, traded for him, and he spent the next few years backing up Joe Montana before taking over the starting job... at age 30.

Close, right? John Beck is almost Steve Young.

SUPERBOWL

8)

Jeff Garcia, Jay Fiedler, Doug Flutie, Jeff Hostetler.....
I think Joe Theismann and Rich Gannon were only pushing 30 when they became full-time starters

I hope he does step up and be our started. But that's only if he can make all the throws, can make the reads, etc. If he's not that guy, then so be it. But I for one wouldn't mind filling other holes on this team right now and then getting a QB in here that we can groom to take over in a few years.

I thought the offseason roster limit was 80. I count 75 on roster right now.

Normally you would street free agents that have future contracts whom would have been on the roster but not counting against th 80 man limit, the draft is this week and is normally followed by the mass signing of UDFA that won't happen this year.

You count 75 on the roster :hmm:

Did you count :?: H.B. Blades, Jammal Brown, Phillip Buchanon, Reed Doughty, Kedric Golston, Rex Grossman, Stephon Heyer, Rocky McIntosh, Santana Moss, Carlos Rogers and Chris Wilson :?:

That would explain it.... I did the same thing, then remembered all those guys are un-signed free agents. D Mc and Fat Albert might as well be on that list too.

I think that's basically the plan in place here - it looks like they're planning on one of the QBs from this draft coming in and getting ready to play - from all accounts, none of these guys will be really ready to go for another year - sooo yeah, we're looking to continue the process of filling holes and adding a QB and getting him ready to go ASAP

IMO - we're heading to the playoffs in 2 to 3 years if we stick to the plan :D

John Beck has said that he thinks that he's going to be the man - it will be good to see a 30 year old have a go at it here

Yes, I counted them. I'm not sure who will be RFA & UFA.

AND John Beck has indicated that he's been given every indication that he's going to be the starting QB

This is going to be fun - I wonder who the back-up to Beck will be

we could call him "Beck and call"

There will be decent vets available. But, I do like Canes' "Suck and Luck" concept.

“When John Beck did come out [in 2007], I had him as the top-ranked quarterback that year and I didn’t even think it was close so I have a lot of confidence in him,” Shanahan said. “You evaluate the quarterbacks every year and he was by far my No. 1 guy.

“I think the world of him.”

“I evaluated him throughout his pro and collegiate career and knew him quite well,” he said. “When you see a guy practice every day regardless of if it’s in your system or against our defense, you surely get to see his strengths and weaknesses. He has not disappointed me since he’s been here.”

Well, ok. That's great, coach. Then why didn't we see him in any games last year? I mean, why not play him for one game for evaluation purposes as you did with Grosman once you realized Grosman was, well gross?

I'd love to believe this, it just sounds. . . convenient.

Maybe he didn't need to see Beck. Beck is already under contract. Maybe they needed to see if they wanted to offer Rex another contract or not.

Why throw Beck to the wolves at the end of the season. Why not come back with an offseason under his belt and less QB's on the roster. I'm starting to think that Beck is our starter. The guy was actually rated pretty high coming out of BYU. Smart player, very hard worker, mobile...sound like a patern?

I found a video on YouTube the other day when Beck was in the draft and Ron Jaworski was fawning over him pretty hard.

We'll see how it goes.

i can't help but wonder whether Beck has simply plunged from high-rated prospect to being decided as no good just because his only experience was being thrown in as a rookie on a league-worst miami dolphins team that year. and they were so awful that year that everyone seemed to automatically lump Beck in with that awfulness. whereas most rookie QBs are given more than 4 games to develop and show whether they suck; in fact, most rookie QBs are probably expected to suck in their first 4 games-- especially if he's playing on the worst team in the league with absolutely NObody to throw to.

and when the coach of that team got fired and went to the Ravens as offensive coordinator, he still thought enough of Beck to try and bring him in there.

so anyway, i am starting to believe that if Shanahan is saying this stuff about Beck he might not just be blowing smoke. maybe he really is a good prospect that just hasn't had much chance to play (and the brief chance he had was in a terrible situation).

There is always a chance we end up with Bulger or some other free agent. But if not, I say Beck gets a toe-to-toe QB competition for the starting job. Shanahan traded for him for a reason. Word on the street is that Beck works his tail off. I think he'll get a chance to win the job.

Lots of good NFL QB's have gone on to nice careers in a similar way. Trent Green, Kurt Warner, Matt Hasselback to name a few.

I agree with you about the competition between Beck and Grossman and a vet, possibly Bulger (like the Larry Johnson and Willie Parker signings but a much happier ending).
