Unfortunately, he has lost more than a step. He no longer can break long runs. His open field vision seems totally gone. What did McNabb do wrong? Got himself to be in the position of odd man out in Philly. No ex Reid QB has fared well outside of Reid's system. Mark Schlereth, former Skin and friend of MCNAbb said that he studied hours of tape of McNabb this past season and he said McNabb constantly missed several reads just like Shanny said. This has nothing to do with O line or recievers. If you can't read - you can't read and REading IS Fundamental. Now if you read right and get your head handed to you, then you can blame the others. Kory improved as the year went along. Clearly Dock was better at first, but Dock had no future as a Shanny guard so they played Kory so he could get better. He chose long range thinking.

If all it takes is a Hall of Fame QB to win a Super Bowl then why didn't Dan Marino win one. Why didn't Elway win one without Shanny. C'mon Iceman, hate Shanny all you want - he IS an egomanical, control freak, but one thing you can't dispute is the fact that he is a proven winner.

Oops, he just caused more damage, he signed OJ Atogwe. Darn it, he just benched Kareem Moore.
Wow!! You must really love Shamehan...well, I will step aside for now and let him break your heart...because he will...Trust me HE WILL! BUT, when he does, I won't say "I told you so"...I will only be there for you with consoling arms. Because you are my Redskin brethren...and I luv ya...but you've been warned!

If Shamehan was so great...he'd still be in Denver! Believe that!
No hearts broken here. I am a Skins fan through the thick and the thin. I know my Skins history 25 years without a play-off appearance before George Allen. Great runs with Allen and Gibbs. I pull for the Skins whether it be Bill McPeak coaching or Jim Zorn coaching. I don't get into whether I like a Redskin coach or not. When Shanny coached Denver, I pulled for him to lose all the time except when they played Dallas. Now, that he is a Redskins coach, I like him, period because he is a Redskins coach. He has pledged to build us not just a winner, but a foundation for winning for future to come. Unlike you, I see the beginnings of that. I saw a team of misfits, unwanteds and guys who weren't even on the roster when the season started beat a play-off contending team on its home field. I saw the same group of guys play the best game against the Giants since beating them in 2007. Shanahan pledges to get 53 guys who have his work ethic. That, right there, is the formula for success. You choose to be negative on what basis? Whether you like Shananan or not, he produced a winner in Denver and continued to win with Jake Plummer. Yes, he made glaring errors as a Denver's coach and he has made some already, here, but those errors didn't stop him from producing a winner in Denver. Do you know why? Because he is a darn good coach. You asked why did he got fired in Denver. It was well publicized why he was fired in Denver.
Unlike you, I will choose to think postive, because I always win. The victory is not in the game. It is that I am a Redskin fan - through the thick and the thin!

scat·back  – a fast and agile running back, often small in stature, skilled at eluding tacklers.

By dictionary.com's definition of a scatback, you are absolutely right.
I don't know how you consider Emmitt Smith & Barry Sanders are the same type of RB, but if you do, I guess Portis can be a scatback.
There is a great diversity in those who play at the running back position. At one extreme are smaller, faster players. These fast, agile, and elusive running backs are often called "scat backs" because their low center of gravity and maneuverability allow them to dodge tacklers. Prototypical "scat backs" would be Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith.
That is a Wikipedia quote. Picture the 64 yard TD run on Portis' first Redskin carry - one cut then speed to take it to the house. That was typical of his Denver days. Nothing about dodging tacklers on that run. Portis either outran tacklers or exploded into and often through them. Just like you said - Portis was NOT a scatback.

Scatback is more often a term used for little backs well under 200 pounds like these guys -
Rodgers is supposed to be a dynamic scatback in the Dexter McCluster or Darren Sproles mold

No apologies necessary. I was wrong when I wrote that he was a scatback. It was fun doing the further research and each time I read my post about Portis' 64 yard TD on his first Redskin carry, I re-live that moment. I was at that game - my first Redskins regular season home game ever. All those years gorwing up and living in Texas, I am finally able to see a Redskin home game. Joe Gibbs' first year back! Portis taking to the house! Thanks for the memory. No apology necessary.

I've been very quiet this off-season. I'm not going thru the daily non-sense of the non-issue discussions b/c nothing is really going on is all. Additionally, I'm in my 4th year of my undergrad and I need to dedicate more time to my classes. I'll be here full tilt once things kick off .

Seeing how hard it was for Brian Westbrook to catch on with another team for the money he wanted, I fully expect to see Portis back with the Burgundy and Gold. He also better take note of Ladanian Tomlinson who just recently said that he is fine with his reduced role.

the other thing to consider is that RB's can't really like to play for Shannahan, because it seems like he can replace them very easily and so shelf life on his team is pretty limited

Agreed! Now let's see what really happens from this point on.
Go Skins...
