Not sure if you mean what Davis did, or what I'm saying he should have done. Either way, I don't agree that you should "never" do either. Receivers have to adjust to the ball that's thrown. DM threw the ball with enough air under it that Davis had plenty of time to switch his head to the other side. One of JC's biggest problems with his deep ball was that he didn't put enough air under it to give receivers a chance to adjust to the ball.
