Betts is better than a back up in a 1 back offense. Betts needs full time carries to excel. This is what I was attempting to illustrate. I thought we were passed these points.

I realize that we cannot get rid of Betts RIGHT NOW. I am fully aware of trade deadlines. I was speaking in the future tense for Betts.

And when Betts re-signed with us he thought Portis would back HIM up? That and the plethora of offers we've gotten for a "starting" running back.

I'm not knocking Betts, just arguing he got the short end of nothing and is where he should be and where he CHOSE to be. He's probably a better runner then a pure backup. The guy couldn't hold onto the ball if it was super-glued to his armpit. Sounds like a tradeoff, something you typically get with backups.

I hope to see more of betts too. that means we are running the ball good, didn't the qb cambell run the ball more effectivly than betts. I will try to find a skills rating on betts, that will list all of the pros and cons he certianly needs to hold on to the football.

Betts is the type of back who cannot spell. He needs to be the feature back to get warmed up. Don't forget what he did when he started when CP was IR. Some guys cna come off the bench and proiduce, some can't. I don't think Betts is that kinda guy

I agree Betts needs more carries to play well, but I think playing more would be enough and he doesn't necessarily need to be the "featured" back. I also think he's a lot less likely to get the chance when his only job was to hold onto the ball and he coughed it up pretty close to costing us the game, which he's done before.

Which further supports my point. He got 1k yards in ~11 games IIRC when given the opportunity and wasn't quite as fumble prone as he is when he gets carries sporadically.

Betts needs to perform in his role. He is not the starter and he knows that when he comes in the game, he needs to gain positive yards and hold on to the football. If he cannot perform in his role, because it takes him a while to get going, well, we need to find someone who can perform how we need them to. The 1k yds in 11 games is a nice stat, but if I remember correctly, the offensive line was playing out of their mind during that stretch.

This is my point. If we're not using him to his strengths, then we either change to use his strengths (not likely since CP is a beast!) or trade him to get someone who we CAN use the way we need. I like Betts, but he's getting the short end of hte stick here.

I'm not sure what you mean by Betts getting the short end of the stick. He's a back-up RB, that's his role and has been for years.

But we're talking about now, so the notion of replacing him is not in the cards at this point. Portis is our strength and should be getting the bulk of the carries anyway. Portis has been the one that has sustained our offense this year.

Stop nitpicking. My point was illustrated. When he was the feature back, he excelled. As a back-up, he doesn't. Can I make my opinion any clearer?

When he started in '06 with 9 games (played in all 16), he had 6 fumbles(lost3). That's not rock solid, but those numbers aren't completely horrible. I still feel he's better than some of the other backs starting right now. And for the stupidity in the comment, "And when Betts re-signed with us he thought Portis would back HIM up?
