one more thought.
anyone remember ramsey's last game under spurrier? guess who they were playing? guess who almost killed him that night, despite having to match up with samuels.
taylor whipped samuels like a red headed step child and literally almost decapitated patrick. on more than one play. and that was against one of the better left tackles in the game. now he'll be facing less talent on the other side of the line going up against right tackles.
i see nothing but upside.

Some want to bash the Skins FO for one trade this offseason, a trade that was forced out of necessity and due to a dire situation. Well, I, for one, think the FO deserves quite of bit of credit. Why? For not chasing mediocre talent earlier this spring and spending the remaining cap money they had available. They saved that money under the cap and now got a premiere player... when we needed him. If they had spent that money on other average free agents earlier this spring, we wouldn't have been able to get Taylor. Well done, FO.

Wooo Hooo!
Guys what other choice did we have? We didn't draft any defensive lineman. The only negative I see is that Phillip Daniels got hurt and possibly his career might be done since he is up in age.
I think the front office had to do this. They are showing that they are serious about winning and aquiring talent. This is not an old Bruce Smith we are talking about here. Taylor is a guy who still has alot left in his tank and can teach our other guys.
This was a desperate situation and the front office acted accordingly.

I love this quote from Cerrato:
Taylor, who was not available for comment and is expected to take a physical today in Washington, has talked about playing just one more season before pursuing acting options, but Cerrato said he is "100 percent confident he'll play more than one year."
Give me a break, Vinny.
Anyway, I agree with you guys who say we didn't really have much choice. The worst thing that could happen IMO would be to see the team do really well this season, but be totally jacked because we our line can't pressure the QB.

I think the general consensus isn't that they want big names, I think it's that we should have addressed youth in the draft. Now we're trading a 1st day pick for a guy who MIGHT have 4-5 year shelf life, at best. That's what I see. I think Taylor will work out on the line, it's just tough to give up that pick.
I agree. I would have been ok with a 3rd round pick (still a first day pick, but a reasonable swap) but Miami was already asking for a 1st rounder before the draft, so I assumed they wouldnt go much lower than that. But still, for the talent we picked up in JT, Im not too upset over that 2nd round pick. I look forward to our d line actually providing some QB pressure. Watch out ROMO!!! mwahahaha!

Cerrato is close friends with Taylor's agent, Gary Wichard. They obviously spoke and Cerrato got confirmation Taylor would play more than one year.
Believe it or not, JLC was just on ESPN's First Take and praised the Skins front office for this trade and getting the deal done.

Isn't that the perspective you would have on all transactions in sports? I mean, time will only tell if the WR we drafted was a prudent move. Time will only tell if drafting JC was a prudent move. As a fan I like to have a bit more optomistic (yet not unrealistic) view of things, especially as of recently with the FO. Glass half full my man, much better way to be a fan.

I think we could have gotten this deal done "cheaper" during the draft. Maybe a 3rd or 4th and a 4th or 5th the next year.
I believe the person most happy about the deal has to be Andre Carter..I can see him having a big year opposite JT!

Time will also tell if she gave you HIV.
But who has five years to wait and judge in hindsight?
As of right now, there were very few options.
The Redskins of the past wouldn't have even left themselves the cap room for such a signing. They would have been too busy spending all of the cap room 24 hours into free agency.
A person would have to be cracked to think that Jason Taylor doesn't immediately improve the pass rush.
A person would further have to be cracked to think that the exact 2nd round pick the Redskins just traded would be everything in question:
A defensive end.
A sack specialist.
A starter.
There was only one or maybe two
possible ones of those in this year's draft.
The rest aren't even being hyped as anything more than possibly competent, with as much downside as upside.
If the Redskins get two years out of Taylor, it will be more than they've gotten out of any defensive line draft selection since:
Not Montgomery & Golston - both tackles and backups.
Not Greg Scott in 2002.
Not Delbert Cowsette in 2000.
Maybe Kenard Lang in 1997.
Once every 11 drafts. I wouldn't call Lang comparable to Taylor, either.
The Redskins absolutely stink at drafting defensive ends, even when they try, which isn't often.
Taylor was a great signing for this reason alone.

I'll join the "good move" camp. Sure, it'd be nice if we paid less or if JT were younger, but he's a huge upgrade, and for at least two more years, he addresses a huge need.

fleetus wrote:Overall, I guess it's a fair gamble. Here are the Pros/Cons as I see them:
PROS1. JT even at 34 is a huge upgrade as a pass rusher
2. As a 3-4 OLB, he is adept at dropping into coverage, something the Skins have not done much on defense.
3. Taylor is a solid citizen and decent team leader, so we've added a good teammate
4. Taylor has played on both the left and right sides before and lined up both as a down lineman and a LB, so Blache now has new options.
5. JT is a much better dancer now

Seriuosly though, he is in exceptional shape, making his age less of a concern
CONS1. JT has two years at 8-9 mil/year, more than triple what Daniels makes. So not only will occupy a huge chunk of cap space while he's here, we really have no guarantee if he'll play one year or two with a third pretty unlikely
2. We gave up draft picks after finally having a nice draft by keeping all our draft picks for the first time in the Snyder era.
3. Taylor has spent the past few seasons at OLB in a 3-4. Sure he would put his hand on the ground occasionally to confuse offenses. Taylor plays at about 245# and is not known for his run stopping so how he is expected to hold up the strong side of the offense on running plays is a huge question.
Bottom Line1. We will need to rotate someone more adept at stopping the run in the LDE spot on some first downs and some running situations
2. Blache very well may line up Taylor as a OLB on the weak side, next to Carter in some situations to create confusion and provide a double blind side pass rush. How does this sound, move Grif to LDE, bring in Golston next to Montgomery, then have Carter and Taylor on the right side, with Fletcher and Washington at MLB and OLB. You can rush OR drop into coverage any combination of Taylor, Carter and Washington without giving up anything against the run.
3. This move will be worth the draft picks given ONLY if we make the playoffs with Taylor contributing. Until then, we won't know if 8+ mil per year + losing two draft picks was a savvy move or another knee jerk over-reaction by Snyder/Cerrato. It does appear to be at least a decent calculated gamble.
I'll add that despite his lack of bulk, he will gain some pass rushing advantages going up against RT's every week. I still say the best way to utilize him is to move him around from LDE to Weak OLB and also occasionally drop him into zone. But, on passing situations where he can pin his ears back and go after the RT without worrying about the run, he could be a monster. Let's just hope the Skins can be effective against the run on 1st and 2nd downs (where Daniels was a BIG contributor) so that we can put Taylor and Carter in lots of 3rd and longs. If opponents can get 4-5 yards a carry all year, the Skins D won't see very many clear cut passing situations.

I think I like the deal. The one thing that flies in the face of the "Oh, they just went for another splashy signing" argument is that this is the most need-driven move of them all.
The Redskins also were the beneficiaries of a unique congruence of circumstances where someone of the caliber of Taylor was even available.
It beats the heck out of bringing in unsigned FAs from off the street, considering each team has 80 players under contract.

Some people have said this is the same old Redskins going out and signing a big name, others have said it was a panic move, I'll call it a good move because they got a guy they wanted and they have cap space to get him with redoing anymore contracts and after his $500000 roster bonus had been paid

Jason Taylor is better than both those guys that went down. He's a proven pro-bowler, and he hasn't missed a game in what, 9 years? Not to mention the other ackalades (sp) aaaaaaannnnndddd... he'll dance all over the linemen....

I guess I can describe myself as cautiously optimistic about this. We gave up quite a lot for a 34 yr old, but if any 34 yr old is worth a 2nd rnder, it's probably Taylor. Besides, we didn't have a lot of options.

You know the best part of this trade is that the Giants were trying hard to get Taylor as part of their Shockey trade with New Orleans. It looks like they've given up on that and had to settle for getting a few picks for Shockey.
