Perhaps you should have stated that BEFORE they made the pick...

not a fan of recent pick. Least favorite move in draft by skins so far.

Gomes has the physicality and mentality to be a reserve defensive back who lines up near the box in nickel and dime packages while also providing special teams coverage value. Comfortable playing in zone down near the line, breaks well on the ball and is quick and aggressive in run support. Not capable of roaming the deep half or shadowing receivers, tight ends or backs in man coverage at the next level. Not comfortable tackling out in space. Durable and has the build to hold up in the NFL. Gomes has some limitations, but still warrant a late round selection or free agent consideration.

The late round drafting hasn't improved i see. I understand its a down year for linemen but they must really plan on attacking them in FA, and if they plan on also addressing WR and CB, then somethings gonna give. Probly be WR again. Which we need every year alot more than people realize.

Here's what I don't understand, if they love the guy - great! But really, you have another pick in 9 picks. Do you really think another team is targeting this guy? Pick your best value pick and use the next pick on the ST/backup guy. hmmmmm...

Now, there I go again, not being specific. :)

Gomes said #Redskins told him he will be worked in coverage units at the slot, corner and some strong safety.

Gomes: "I feel comfortable down in the box, close to the action. My strengths are being able to cover in the slot."

Well that makes me feel better that they plan on using him as a nickel corner. Probably Otagwe's backup.

Exactly. Cody Glenn, Dallas Sartz, Dejon Gomes, it never ends.

Gomes said at Nebraska he played in three of the four special teams units as well.

It still doesn't make sense. Chances are we could've gotten this kid in the 7th or as an UFA. We have gotten terrible value our last two picks.

By the way regarding Cody Glenn. He's doing a damn good job over in Indy. He's their special teams guru. Get's a ton of tackles.

yea but they still take guys in the 5th round that would go undrafted. Its not smart when there are guys with starting potential out there.

Cody Glenn doesn't have a position. You don't draft Special teams guys.

So, this pick might mean that Barnes is going back to CB (assuming we haven't given up on Moore).

For what it's worth, Jville just drafted a kid that doesn't even have stats in Rod Issac from Middle Tenn. State. Maybe these coaches know more than us. That's all I'm saying.

Also, lot's of DB's coming off the board now. So this must've been the Skins highest rated DB on the board. Not going to knock them for taking the guy they wanted.

A ton of tackles? 24 in two years.

Barnes back to CB, Gomes looks like a replacement for Horton or Moore

With the 146th pick in the NFL Draft, the Redskins select DeJon Gomes, a free safety out of Nebraska. I don't know much about Jones, but Tennessee Titans blog Music City Miracles has an interesting take on him:

While Gomes only had two years to prove his worth to NFL scouts while at Nebraska after transferring from Junior College, he wasted little time in becoming a fringe prospect and gained a reputation as a hard-hitter, a ball hawk, and an overall big play machine. He's got the size, strength, and coverage skills to play any position in the defensive backfield and even lined up as a linebacker at Nebraska when the situation called for it, so his versatility is a big plus, but most scouts project him as a strong-safety in the NFL.

So on paper, you've got a good looking player who can line up at multiple positions and has a great physical makeup. What's the downside in picking him? I think that the versatility that defines his game also hurts him. Teams can make him into whatever they want him to be, but at the same time, he's not a perfect fit for any position which hurts his status in the eyes of a lot of teams.

Sounds like a Lorenzo Alexander of the backfield, frankly. At the very least, an intriguing prospect.

Don't be shocked if we don't take Kendric Burney with our next pick. Graded as a 3rd round pick and we're in the late 5th. Good value here.

TJ Yates off the board.

Let's go Jerrell Powe for NT next pick.
