Redskins interview Mike Pettine for DC job
The Redskins interviewed Mike Pettine for their defensive coordinator job.
Fired by the Browns one year ago, Pettine spent all of 2016 out of football and is now looking to get back in. 50-year-old Pettine is a Rex Ryan disciple who coordinated the Bills' defense in 2013 and the Jets' defense in 2009-2012. Although we haven't heard Pettine's name much in a while, he would be an exciting hire for a Redskins defense that underachieved in 2016.
As a DC his teams have ranked 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10 in total defense. That's pretty good.

Hopefully, not in that order.

Actually, it is. But look at it this way.
His Jets defenses kept getting worse and ultimately, they were 8th best in the league.
He then took over the 22nd ranked Buffalo defense and it became top-10.
Imagine our offense with a top-half-of-the-NFL or better defense.

as bad as our defensive stats were last season, adding a new DC and some better players should put us in the top 15

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports new Rams coach Sean McVay is "hoping" to hire Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.
Going on 70, Phillips remains one of the most respected defensive minds in the league. He'd be inheriting some highly-intriguing pieces in Los Angeles, though also many more holes than he had in Denver. Phillips also employs a 3-4 defense, while the Rams were 4-3 under coaches Jeff Fisher and Gregg Williams.

The Rams have a nice roster on defense. Some holes to fill, but some phenomenal blue-chip players, too, which is by far the harder thing to find when building a unit.

Word is that Phillips agreed to terms to join McVay in Los Angeles. Hell of a bad day at the office for the Skins FO.

I'm on the Pettine bandwagon. The guy has coached some really solid defenses on multiple teams. He sounds like just what we need.

At least someone at Redskins Park knew Phillips was the man.

I also like Wade Phillips but it appears he's not high on the list of this FO or maybe Jay Gruden
there are still a couple of good possibilities out there - Joe Barry was not as much the main reason for the poor showing on defense - Joe did not have a great staff and he needed better players - a good DC will help but it's also key that we get good assistants that are on the same page and some better players
this from John Keim - 1/11/17
Defensive Staff: The Redskins’ best defenses over the last 20 years were coached by solid staffs. It starts with the coordinator, of course, but his ability to attract top coaches also matters. Williams did that here. (His defenses largely weren’t as effective after he left Washington.) If you pair a good, smart coordinator with a strong staff, that’s how you maximize your talent. Barry’s staff did not; there were complaints about some of the assistant coaches and it led to some players trying different techniques and getting themselves in trouble on the field.

My pick has been Pettine, even when Phillips was available.
More worried about talent than coaching on that side of the ball.

What's the freaking hold up?
3 good candidates have been either hired or promoted. Pettine and Bradley seem to be the two best candidates left.
Gruden better not foul this up. He's getting close.

The fact that Gruden's contract hasn't been extended yet has to be hurting the coaching search. We're just starting to become a place where people may want to work, but who wants to sign up knowing they may be replaced if/when a new HC shows up in a year?

To me, Pettine would also be the kind of guy I'd like to see take over as HC if, for some reason, Jay were not retained after next season.
He's a bad-ass.
Wish we still had Kyle running the offense. Gosh does he know how to exploit the weakness of a defense.

I'd love to see Mike Vrabel hired.

My day just went south. Did I just hear the Skins are interviewing Rob Ryan for DC??? I will officially turn in my fan card if that comes to fruition. Talk about a worse coordinator than Barry. I understand Bruce Allen and Dan love Rex Ryan, but Rob Ryan is such a bust. Kind of like when those two wanted to hire Jon Gruden and they settled on Jay Gruden. Uggg. I'm so pissed right now. Is this what it's come to?

Ryan has a negative affect on people, he is not the right guy to pull the team together. That and the fact that he is looking for a job means he ain't the right guy.

Gus Bradley is still their first choice but he's everyone's first choice. Doubt he ends up in D.C. We always lose out on these competitions.

If Scott, Jay, Bruce want him bad enough, Danny will overpay to get him...NO salary cap for coaches.

That would mean they wanted Barry more than Wade Phillips. That's a scary thought.
I'm concerned about the lack of a hire, too. Hopefully they're just performing their due diligence by interviewing all the candidates they can before making a decision. I just hope all the good coaches don't get snatched up while we're still busy kicking tires.
No Ryans, please.
IMHO, just hire Pettine and lets get started on next season.

Seems like Jay would really like to have Gunther from Cincinnati but we don't have permission to talk to him.
Pettine looks excellent. He simply gets great results.
Wade Phillips is still technically not signed but I don't really hold out any hope for him.
Anybody but Rob Ryan. He simply gets bad results.

Why do I feel this is who Jay wanted all along...
John Keim of ESPN.com reports that outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky will interview for the coordinator job. Manusky joined Jay Gruden’s staff last year after spending four years as the defensive coordinator for the Colts. Manusky, who played for the Redskins in the late 1980s, has also been the top defensive coach for the Chargers and 49ers.
