I agree that Scot went BPA. However, I think the future state of the team is part of his equation and made this decision a no-brainer.
Agree with both of you completely. Docston was #11 on Kiper's top 50 and was highly ranked almost everywhere else.
This is how you do it. You get great value at the #21 pick. You get a first rounder who doesn't have to come in and be the man on day one, and you stock the team with as many elite players as you can regardless of position or need.

Btw can we talk about how badly McCloughan rolled the Texans last night? I know it was just a 6th round pick next year, but Houston had no reason to give that pick away to trade up one spot.
I don't know how he pulled that off, but I would love to find out the details.

Yea, as I said in the other thread I thought we'd trade back...he loves stockpiling picks!!

Sounds like we may have gotten the steal of the first round (and an extra pick in 2017). God, I love having a real GM!

Getting Docston will make Clinton Portis happy, he has been saying all along that a big possession receiver is the most important player we can get.

That wasn't the typical trade back to stockpile picks move though, you know? That seemed like some serious poker faced game of chicken stuff to force the Texans to make a dumb trade. Loved it.

Doctson was a great pick and there still some solid DL and DT's on the board.
First Round Grade = A

Agree about the GM... But it's Miami that got the steal of the draft... I don't think the off field stuff is a big deal... and he is an absolute monster in pass pro.

I agree about the off the field stuff. My concern with Tunsil is more that last night happened to him. Someone hacking his accounts and posting that stuff? That's insane.

Two good points from Keim this morning about Docston. I was curious if that pick might affect Garcon or DJax this year:
Cap savings: The Redskins have only about $4 million in cap space available after signing corner Josh Norman last week. And they have two expensive receivers in Jackson ($9.25 million) and Garcon ($10.2 million). The Redskins like Garcon quite a bit, but cutting him would save the Redskins $8 million. However, a source said nothing will change for Garcon. If nothing else, the addition of Doctson allows the Redskins to move on after this season from either Garcon or Jackson. Also, by not needing to re-sign both players, and with a cheaper starting receiver in Doctson, the Redskins will have more money available to sign other key free agents such as Cousins, tight end Jordan Reed, linebacker Junior Galette and defensive end Chris Baker. They can cut receiver Andre Roberts and save $3 million (or $4 million if it’s designated post-June 1).
And what Gruden liked is intriguing to say the least:
A.J. Green comparison: The Redskins met with Doctson only one time, at the scouting combine, for 15 minutes. But he has definitely had his fans in the organization for a long time. Redskins coach Jay Gruden, though, saw something on tape that looked familiar, which is why he said Doctson reminded him in some ways of his former Bengals receiver, A.J. Green. Though Doctson is 2 inches shorter than Green, Gruden said Doctson has “the same type of body control and the ability to high-point” the ball. The Redskins lack a player with that height and leaping ability, and it should make Doctson a threat in the red zone. He said his game begins with the “most dominant trait a receiver should have, and that’s catching the football.”

t's clear that this franchise is now being managed well AND Dan Snyder is not making a mess of things as he has since he bought this franchise
these guys are fully focused on what helps this franchise and to Snyder's credit, he seems to be fully on board with everything they want to do

Good stuff in the Post on Docston. You can sort of see the traits that Mccloughan talks about here:
Doctson credited his rise from Wyoming transfer and Texas Christian walk-on to hard work, humility and family. But his humility stood out most.
“Being without a scholarship, you’re viewed kind of in a different lens,” the 6-foot-2, 202-pound wide receiver said. “If I’m a head coach, and I got guys on scholarship, I’m gonna show ‘em more praise, those are guys I recruited. I was a guy that was in the back — kinda [invisible]. I embraced that.
“I thought, ‘Man, I’m gonna be the janitor of this team. You go in this room, see the room is clean. You’re gonna wonder who cleaned it. And I’m there smiling because I know I did it. So that’s really how I approached TCU. That’s how I was able to stay grounded throughout my years there. And I plan on doing [that] on this next level.’ ”

Yea extremely humble kid, left his scholarship in Wyoming to walk on to TCU because he grew up with TCU football.

Yeah I had Treadwell as my "sleeper" pick for us in the first round. Thought he was the better WR, but I definitely trust that Scot knows better than I. Not really surprised that we went WR in the first round.
I'll be curious to dig into the difference between those two guys. Both are 6-2 but Treadwell is like 20 lbs heavier. Assuming Doctson is the speedier guy?
I have a feeling that "character" was the difference... anyone notice how Treadwell appeared to be pouting during the interview with Deion? Sanders even said something about it... "you look like you're not happy about where you went". I get the disappointment, but a mature professional will just roll with it, and you will never see it... see Laramy Tunsil... man, he rolled with it, and gained mucho respect.
Doctson is rarely demonstrative. Takes care of business, acts like he's been there before. No showboating. His businesslike approach reminds me of Art Monk.
He has excellent hands, and will win more than his share of contested balls. He will mix it up a bit when pushed. I did not see much film of him in the running game, but I suspect he would have no qualms about blocking... how good he is there, I have no idea... OH! And he'll get to hone his craft against two of the better, physical corners in the game... I imagine they will also work to put a little more muscle on his frame, as well.
I'm pleased. I think he's the real deal.

Excited with Docston. I wanted a tall receiver, didn't expect so many dline to be free in the 2nd round and it makes it even better that came with it

The bong hit this was over two years old, and all the teams knew about it already. I don't understand why that should have affected his draft stock, unless they were overly conscious of the negative publicity. Besides, it's not like pot isn't being legalized, or at least decriminalized, in more and more states all the time. How many years before the federal government finally gets a clue and removes it from the schedule 1 list?

The world's leading researcher, Isreali, Raphael Mechoulam, has done studies showing pot helps aide in brain recovery after concussions. The NFL should be leading the charge on legalization.

I still don't think it was just the drug use. That was really weird how that all went down last night. The draft is about to start and suddenly Tansil's social media accounts are sharing bong videos and screenshots of conversations where he's breaking NCAA rules. There wasn't a lot of time for teams to get a grip on what was going on exactly. You want to spend your #6 pick on him and then a video of the guy having sex with a goat comes out on twitter around pick 12?

Jerruh and Howdy Doody would have been asking for the goat's contact info...
Cowboys War Room, showing their player selection charts... As you can see, Jerruh (left) just back from most recent plastic surgery... Head Puppet, Jason Garrett, center, dancing on the table. That's Buffalo Bob, Chief of Prima Donna Talent Evaluation, on the right.
