First round I say we go Shref for our RT. Get lupati if possible for LG and we can likely draft a RG or C that can compete to start.

Defensively I would pick up David Harris from the Jets at ILB, Byron Maxwell from the Seahawks at CB, and either Devin McCourty or Will Allen at safety.

4 solid and cost effective players from FA, draft the rest of the needs... Shref in 1st round, a NT in second round, then best available from there....

Id also be up to moving D Hall to safety this year to partner with whoever we pickup in FA.

Prowl33 I'm with you on all fronts with the exception of Shreff, I prefer Satnley from ND, but would be very happy with those other names mentioned. I also think Hall would make a good FS.

I think its possible we could still get a starting safety in the second round. Free agency is a possibility too with some guys like:

Rahim Moore Denver 24 years old
Devin McCourty NE 27 years
Kendrick Lewis Houston 27
Dwight Lowery Atlanta 28
Nate Allen Philly 27

Given how terrible the position has been for us, do you think it might be the spot to throw the big FA money at one of those premier guys?

Personally I'd probably bring back Merriweather too.

Note on Collins post OSU game:

Many have Alabama safety Landon Collins penciled in as the Redskins’ pick at No. 5 overall, assuming that the junior decides to declare for the draft. He’s a very good player but he strictly an in-the-box safety who sometimes plays more like an extra linebacker. In last night’s Sugar Bowl he stayed down a couple of times after making tackles and if he struggles with the physicality of the Buckeyes he could have issues in the NFL. Yes, the Redskins desperately need two safeties but you can’t reach for need, especially not at that point in the draft.

Yeah collins isnt a definite big impact so I would pass. We can likely trade down to get the top tackle or guard we want. If the Brown's arent willing to trade our #5 for their 2 first round picks, maybe we throw in rg3 to seal the deal :p

Collins is no Taylor. He is a beast in the box, and will remind of Taylor there.. But Taylor was also dominant in coverage, as well... Collins has not shown strong skills in coverage. He is a risk that we probably should not take. If we draft from our current position, it MUST be a home run.

A case for Landon Collins:
First off, it's very rare for a strong safety to be taken this high in the draft, but Landon Collins is not your normal strong safety. He's built like a linebacker, but has the fluidity of a corner. I have watched a lot of film on Collins recently, and a few things stick out to me. One, he is a violent tackler, who can make plays inside the box, one-on-one on the outside, or deep down the field in the passing game. When he hits a player, they go down! Two, the kid is always around the football. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart uses Collins talents in so many ways, that offenses can't scheme against him. Smart will walk Collins down to be his 8th man in the box, flex him out to cover the tight end, bring him on a blitz off the corner, or sit him back in deep coverage. It is this versatility that makes him such a unique player to NFL scouts. Finally, when Collins is back in coverage, and the ball is in the air, he makes up a lot of ground in a hurry. This is exactly what you look for in a safety prospect, and I believe his ability to do this will not limit him to simply a strong safety in the NFL. Landon Collins is the new hybrid breed that every NFL defensive coordinator covets.

No one can replace Sean, but this sounds "Taylor-esque" to me

I wouldn't draft Collins at #5, but that analysis is nonsensical. Collins is a tough, physical player and the reason he stayed down a few times is because he came into the game with a shoulder injury and played through it. He also is by no means a strictly in-the-box safety and actually does have good coverage skills.

Interesting. Dude had something like 11 tackles last night, might have something to do with it too.

No. Taylor could cover... he did not have to "make up ground". That's huge. You could have used Taylor as a cornerback, and he would have been able to take away many a team's #1 receiver. In the NFL, "making up ground" = "you've been beat" = "6 points", unless you are talking Darrell Green...

None of this mean's that I'd puke if he were our pick... but the fact is, he's got some learning to do before he helps us in coverage.

Trey, sounds like dicing and slicing words. We've all seen Sean run from sideline to sideline to spear the ball or the ball carrier. He was the O.G. Beast Mode. That's called "covering ground" imo......

I would vomit if Collins was our pick, or Cooper...it would mean to me Danny is still involved.

A strong safety is not worth the 5th pick in the draft...NO WAY! We should never have drafted Laron in the first round. A starting strong safety can be gotten in the 3rd round. Get a free safety in Free Agency.

We need to draft lineman and pass rushers.

Brandon Scherff showed me nothing versus Tennessee in the Taxslayer Bowl. Nothing. He might make a very good Guard, but not a Tackle and definitely not worthy of the #5 pick.

discussing potential picks this far out is fine but comparing any potential player coming out of this draft with any of the very best players to ever play the game is a little bit ridiculous

Landon Collins is never, ever, going to be as good a safety as Sean Taylor but there is quite possibly not going to be another Sean Taylor in the draft in the next 50 years ... get over this stupid comparison ...

we don't need the next Trent Williams or the next Sean Taylor - we just need to keep adding players that fit in with what the plan is, if we ever get one, and if we ever get to a stage where Dan Snyder is no longer involved in picking who might come play and coach here

I don't even know if taking the best safety in this draft is the best thing for the Redskins at this time ...

Landon Collins is going to be a helluva defensive player for some team in the future - this guy is always around the ball

The Redskins have the worst scouting dept in the NFL ... by a mile. Plus Dan Snyder thinks he's a scout and he gets a 1/3 vote on who we draft. Then he tells his puppet Bruce Allen (who is the dumbest GM in the NFL by an eon) and since Allen is clueless who to draft, he defers to Snyders wide-eyed six-year-old candy-store eyes wishes. Then Jay Gruden who is probably the stupidest coach in the NFL weighs in with his absurd and dull thoughts. So we end up drafting busts in rounds 1-2-3-4-5-6-7. Redskins continue to SUCK for the next several decades as this scenerio repeats itself year after year. Bottom line: Start rooting for the Seahawks or Ravens or Patriots ... anybody but this loser franchise.

Gruden is just plain dumb. Just look at this face -- that tells whole story.

Image

Is this the face of a tower of intellect? He looks more like a petty small time criminal who has spent most of his life in and out of prison. Dull witted and uninspired -- with no thoughts in his head.

I see NO innovation on offense ... never adjusts anything at halftime ... never designs an offense to fit the skill set of his players. He is as bad as Jim Zorn. Have you guys ever seen a more inept offense ? Yes, it's 3rd and 15 ... lets call a 5 yard out pattern. Then punt. He is pathetic. So of course he was hired to a 5 year contract.

Snyder likes to hire incompetent people at key positions (like head coach and GM) so he feels smarter and more powerful. Why do you think Cerrato was GM for so many years? Snyder is a typical low-self-esteem "little man". He feels inept and emasculated by his shortness (a psychological condition called "little man complex") -- so he's always trying to "prove himself" as powerful and important. Snyder never grew up and has all the emotional and mental maturity of a 5 year old. Would you put a 5 year old in charge of a professional NFL team? No. So of course, the Redskins are doomed to failure as long as it's being run by an adolescent, immature, and spoiled rich little 5 year old boy.

Go watch that movie "Foxcatcher" about another rich "little man" with low self esteem ... and you will see the Dan Snyder dynamic perfectly captured.

I think with the talent we have currently hes kind if limited. Often times our QBs dont have time and just arent quick enough to make a decision on those 3rd and longs so they just check down rather than go with an option up the field. Griffin is famous for this, colt wasnt much better.

Ive listened to almost every press conference Gruden has done, I like the way he talks. He does so with confidence and no hesitation. He doesnt seem to care about the opinions of the media, and seems strong willed when it cones to those above him (bruce and danny) and why not be, he got his 5 year contract.

Just curious ... what has Gruden done on the field (in terms of gameplanning) that makes you think the Redskins have found their juggernaut coach? There is nothing I have seen from him this year that makes me think he has a brilliant offensive mind -- or even an average nfl offensive mind. The redskins have looked badly out-coached all season.

We have a talent issue, not a coaching issue. Nobody is claiming to know if Gruden is going to be a great coach yet or not.

I challenge you to name a coach out there that with this current team would of done any better. Grudens personality is perfect for what we need.

Some predict:

5 Washington
Randy Gregory
Nebraska
OLB34
Reach/Value: +0 Height:
6'5"
Weight:
255 Alternate Pick #1
Vic Beasley
Alternate Pick #2
Dante Fowler Jr
Randy Gregory is an athletic freak as an outside linebacker. Since he is a lanky 6'6", many scouts believe he can add up to 40 pounds to his current playing weight of 245 lbs. Gregory was slowed in the national spotlight against USC (Holiday Bowl), but the Trojans had three (THREE!) offensive players assigned to Gregory on each play. If an NFL offense is going to need that much help stopping Gregory's lightning-quick first step and uncanny awareness, then Ryan Kerrigan will feast on single blocks in 2015 and beyond
