Tampa Bay would have moved up to get him, once the Vikings went up to #3 the Bucs looked for trade down partners.
I thought Tampa was going after defense. I never heard they were looking for a RB.

If the clock ran out no way Claiborne would have gotten past the Bucs and then both the Rams and the Cowboys would have lost out

They went with Barron at #7 But
wanted Richardson, in the end they settled for Doug Martin at #31

I agree that we didn't overpay. But I think the Rams could have gotten better value from Dallas for the #6 pick than just a 2nd rounder.
Obviously they couldn't since their phone wasn't ringing.
Deadskins wrote:The Pies moved up 8 spots for only a #2. Compared to our trade and the Browns trade, it seems like they got a bargain.
I personally don't think the Cowboys paid enough. I doubt any Redskin fan would. But you're making the same mistake Frank did. Trading is like dancing, you need a partner. The Rams want more picks. You can't make a trade unless the girl says yes, and she's weighing you against her other options. Counting slots and saying what you paid to move up compared to other trades is irrelevant. We were trading for R33, not the #2 pick. Cleveland wanted Richardson, not the #3 pick. The Rams didn't want Claiborne (or anyone else available at that time) as much as adding a #2 pick. Now if we were trading picks today for the 2013 draft you could look at it that way. For the 2012 draft you have to analyze it trade by trade.
According to 1niksder, Dallas was also ready to cough up a #4. It seems the Rams just took the first offer without trying to haggle at all.

Not according to this:
Demoff had laid the groundwork for such a discussion six hours earlier, dialing Jones and telling him, "If you want to trade up to 6, consider us. We'll be reasonable. We already got such a great deal from the Redskins [in the Griffin trade] that we won't try to screw you guys."
Now, with the Rams on the clock, Jones told Demoff he'd make the deal for Dallas' first- and second-round selections: 14th and 45th overall. The Rams' COO hung up and briefly discussed the trade with Fisher and Snead, reviewing a value chart assigning points to specific picks. Then he called Jones back and said, "Stephen, it's Kevin. Would you throw in your five? … Come on. … What will you throw in as a cherry on top?"
Um … nothing.
Demoff laughed. "Alright," he said, "we'll call you right back."

He's cool... what else can we talk about? How'd we do in the second round?

the best grades of the draft so far and who I would give an A+ to would be:
1. Eagles
2. Cowboys

There's no denying that Dallas picked up who is considered the consensus top Corner in this years draft.

After adding Carr I don't see why they'd target the best cb instead of safety... They cut Newman and its the obvious hole on that side of the ball.
Can't say I didn't get bugged when they traded up or that I didnt suspect who's name was going to be called. I just don't get it. Hopefully he has a hard time adjusting to NFL speed, the safeties suck, and rgiii drops 700 yards on them this year. Hopefully

Yeah but to say they have had one of the best drafts so far is a huge stretch. They've had one pick for which they gave up two picks this year. By that logic, our draft has been far better. Just a troll looking to get a rise out of real fans.

HA! I think Dallas is preparing for the NFC East who should project as being a super passing league. We get a QB who is best known for his deep ball. Dallas gets a true cover corner. Philly got a dlineman to prepare for the Giants running attack b/c they think they're fine at corner. Any way you slice it, it's going to be a blast and you can take your pick on who's going to be the top team next year.

Great pick for the Redskins....and to those who still question the cost of the trade, exactly how much is a potential FRANCHISE QB worth? How much is a decade or more of being revelant, and dominant, worth? To me, this was a GREAT move by our FO. Now, we will see if our scouting staff, and Mike Shanahan, were accurate in their assesment of RGIII.
Trust me, I know we have made our mistakes in the draft before....remember Heath Shuler? How about Desmond Howard? But, think this time we got it right.
WRT other draft movement last night......WHO CARES? Didn't directly pertain to the Skins. We got our QB.....how can anyone not put the Redskins in the conversation for round 1 draft honors....as we got one of the two QB's that pretty much all the talking heads say is a can't miss prospect. Additionally, Mike Shanahan said that we prefered RGIII to Luck (probably based on the offensive scheme we want to run).
Please, Child.....

Not to bust your balls but it's Child - Please!!! Anyways, I'll remain cautiously optimistic. I don't think we're going to all of a sudden be good or be as dynamic offensively as Carolina was last year. I pray that we are. I really do but I don't think we have all the pieces in place that Carolina does (see running game).

From their position in the third round (No. 69 overall), the Redskins must make the decision to move up, trade back, or take the best player available. Former Redskins general manager Charley Casserly revealed some of the strategy behind these decisions.
“When you set up your draft board, you have players separated by round,” he explained. “If you’re sitting there in the third round and there’s a good player at the end of the second round that you don’t think will be there when you pick, then you move up to get him.”
Casserly warned that draft boards fall apart when teams puts too much emphasis on positional need, skewing a player’s analysis. This can result in what has become known as reach picks.
“We’ve all done it, so you have to be disciplined not to do it,” Casserly said. “You don’t want to reach for a mid-round player, because a third-round pick has only a 30 percent chance of starting after four years.”
The best strategy for building a roster in the later rounds of the draft is to target the best players available, and target areas of need in free agency.
“Trade up if there’s a second-round value there, and take the best player otherwise,” he said. “The veteran free agent market will get going again after the draft and it won’t cost a lot of money.”
Casserly noted that the Redskins areas of need going into today revolve around the two offensive line and defensive front-seven.
“I think the right tackle position is something that you’d like to get a little more settled,” he said. “Depth on the interior offensive line is another area of consideration, and tight end is a possibility.”
Even after adding veteran defensive backs in free agency, Casserly didn’t downplay the possibility of the Redskins addressing the secondary in the draft.
“You have some depth there, but quality youth would be good if it’s available,” he explained. “There are some needs that hopefully they can fill during the draft, and if not, then perhaps another veteran free agent or two can help them.”
In Shanny's first two drafts with the Skins, besides Trent in the first round, he has not taken a lineman earlier than the 7th round. What I get from this article, unless an O lineman is deemed BPA, then we will see more of the same in this draft.
Shanny is talking up Jamaal Brown, but they could be a smoke screen that there is a tackle out there that they want in the 3rd round - Stephenson, Oklahoma, perhaps?
If Stephenson is there, I am going to predict him as our 3rd round pick. I could even see us trading back and still getting him.

He has visited us. He may last another round. I'd love to get Phillip Blake at C. We will know in a few minutes.
Hail.
