You don't need sources to figure that out. He complained about not having enough freedom in Blache's 4-3 to rush the qb. As either a DT or DE in a 3-4, his main job would be to take up blockers to let the lb's make plays.

For the guys who rae callin out Griff's name, he's not able to be healthy a complete year. He's got back problems, and he'll miss games or SHOULD miss games he stays in.

And additionally, after the latter 1/2 of the season we saw with Fat Al out and no defensive line penetration, we need rotational depth at DT/NT/wherever Fat Al lines up. We don't have squat behind him.

Interesting stuff...

Haslett knows something of playing LB... and seems to have a little in common with Big Albert...

Haslett's explanation:

"The bad thing is I'm from Pittsburgh and when I was growing up, Jack Lambert and Terry Bradshaw were my idols," Haslett said. "Anybody who has asked me if I did it on purpose, I would say I slipped or something. But the truth is, I knew if they scored again we were never going to beat them. So one of the players accidentally ripped his helmet off, and his head was exposed so I kicked him. It wasn't the best thing to do. My family was getting into fights in the stands. I couldn't go home for a couple off-seasons."

I think I like him...

I see 1 other problem with Big Al at NT. I think NT's take even more of a beating then DT's, & he isn't the most durable guy around.

I don't think they'd use AH at NG. He's way too mobile for a big guy to lock into pure gap control

In Tennessee Haynesworth was double teamed constantly and penetrated the backfield. Creating a one on one for his teammates making his teammates that much more effective.

Yeah, he got double teamed, but that was because the other teams wanted to prevent his penetration. In a 3-4, his role would be to get double teamed...to eat up blockers. Not to penetrate. Look at the sack numbers the great 3-4 DEs have...and you'll see they're rather dismal. Passrush is just not their job...tying up blockers to prevent teams from double-teaming the OLBs is.

This should be interesting because I believe Haynesworth was quoted saying he did not want to play in the 3-4, which is 1 reason he signed with the skins.

"The DE in a 3-4 ideally would weigh between 275-300 lbs and would be able to beat a double team by getting a push. The 3-4 NT is the most important position on the field and is responsible for controlling the A gaps. If a running play comes through the A gap he must make the tackle or control the lineman freeing up another player to make the tackle. The ideal NT would weigh north of 335 lbs."

Now I am not sure how the Ravens use Nata, but thats how we should use Haynesworth. I hate the Ravens so I try to avoid them, so I am not sure if Nata lines up as a DE or NT. I see our front 7 looking like this:

DE - Jarmon/Gholston
NT - Monty/?
DE - Haynesworth/Daniels
ILB - Fletcher
ILB - Blades
OLB - McIntosh
OLB - Orakpo

A case could be made for moving Blades to backup, Rocky to ILB and Carter to OLB

I think Big Al playes NT. Jarmon, Alexander, Golston & Daniela (if he stays) competing for playing time at DE. I think Montgomery moves to the UFL.
Carter didn't lay well as an OLB in San Fran. I see Orakpo & Wilson at OLB, maybe Gatewood &/or Young conpeting for backup positions. London & Rocky at ILB with Blades & Henson competing for backup.

Haynesworth's problem with Blache was that he was asked to play gap controll defense. I think a guy like Haynesworth needs to be made a "FalconDT" who has liberty to line up any where along the line, move any of the other DT's or DE's inside or outside depending on which Olineman he picks to take on. Imagine Haynesworth standing up talking trash to the QB as he moves inside over center then out to left end then right end. No gap responsibility for AH, let him roam and 'create havoc'

Since when has Haynesworth been considered a sack artist?
He was never a sack artist in college or with Tennesse. The 3-4 DEs know there role. Even in a 4-3 he would line up in the interior and still not produce many sacks. He was never that and unless we aquire another dominant DT to go side by side he will continue to see double teams.
It is not up to us, the coaches or Haynesworth how the opposing offenses block Haynesworth. You could draw up whatever play you wanted Haynesworth will be accounted for by the offense trying to block him.
Which is exactly why we should pick up Seymour.

Unless Haynesworth wants to go Reggie White style and play DE in a 4-3?

AND - it's not up to Haynesworth what Haslett want's to do with the defense or how Haslett and the defensive line coach want use him - every player here needs to see that this franchise is undergoing a culture change and that NFL knowledgeable guys are now making the on the field decisions

I think we will have team leaders in the locker room and in the practice facilities, but in order to become a team here, the stronger and more experienced players need to just do their job and support the other players around them in doing the same thing

for too long here, we have seen a group of talented players trying to get it together on the field - that does not work - that is the main reason we are a 4-12 franchise - we are NOT a team

all of these guys have to get a grip & realize that things are different here - if they do not want to get it in gear they will not be here
