Okay, seemingly every week exposes another roster mismatch, this time it's Landry at FS. Realistically, to get back to smothering defense we are going to need changes and subtractions. Here are mine on the Defensive Side
Orakpo to DE - Philip Daniels gets all my respect for fighting for the past few years, having said that...He is a joke when he has to chase a ballcarrier to the sideline. Orakpo to DE for god's sake. This leads to
Get a REAL Strongside linebacker - We seem to be masking this difficiency with Orakpo and while we haven't been totally exposed, to me the 30, 50, 60yd runs don't happen with a real linebacker. This is why Orakpo doesn't tackle anyone from the SAM position. we are hiding a position we never addressed.
Determine a real FS - It could be Moore but it isn't Landry. He hasn't made real plays since Taylor was beside him. Landry wouldn't be flying in from centerfield to lunge tackle if he is near the line. this and a SAM would stop the gaping holes that turn to the gamebreakers Turner had yesterday
We can only do so much in one year. This should be alot for the defensive side
Offensively - Where the real problem lies
Portis must go - Betts showed the difference yesterday, and if he was the primary runner up to this point, we would have more than 2 wins. Nothing is harder on a terrible pass pro team than a lifeless run game. The fact that Betts averaged 4.7 behind a line that hasn't been our strongest should drive the point home. This should start in Denver.
Mike Williams needs to be inside - He gets beaten by the spin but probably never in his life by the bull rush. He could be a great pulling guard as well as he blocks but we need to put him at RG, end THAT carousel, and focus on our three biggest needs for the offseason, which are...
LT, C, RT - Rabach can't snap the ball to the same spot twice in any game. It's hard enough for Campbell to focus without catching a wild pitch prior to handling the wild rush. We need to put Levi Jones in and make a determination soon. Maybe he can hold the LT for a year or two, or maybe the RT for a few years, but we need someone in the meantime because this team can't fix all the holes at once. He could be a big deal for this team next year if he can work out because it could be very difficult to acquire OT's this offseason. We should plan on using a 3rd or 4th (whatever we have on the day of the draft) to pick up the best available C. Our biggest offseason move must be an OT.
Offensively, it's hard to judge the 3 second rounders when no one has time to throw them the ball. Campbell may be back next year because he'll be cheap and there is so much else to take care of that we may not have the $$ to pick up a new offensive line and a franchise QB. Don't be suprised when this happens.
Special Teams - The problem we have on Teams is we have no threat returners. Let's get one this offseason to return punts and kickoffs. It's boring starting on the 25 after every kickoff.
This is alot, not to mention the all-to-valuable O-line depth, but if this team is going to look good next year, this foolishness must stop

I'm watching my recording of the game. Hall was right about what happened during the scuffle.
As he tried to back away an ATL coach wouldn't let him loose and allowed the players to crowd and rough him up. The the HC comes over and throws a clear forearm at Halls head which really set things off. Clear as day.

Oh man, the announcers were falling over themselves to be first to praise the coach for getting involved in that scuffle.

I think the fact that ESPN is going off about it is a clear indication that the coach was in the wrong... If Hall was dead wrong it'd be getting run into the ground....

- This is the offseason to rebuild an offensive line, let go of a few troublemakers, and look for some young undiscovered talent at the RB and QB positions (i.e., late-round picks: experiments). Sign an aging vet to play quarterback for next year, and look to sign a younger vet in the mold of Betts who is let go by their team this year to play RB next season. Draft 2-4 offensive linemen and sign another 2 in free agency. Revamp that front office and get a new head coach in town. (HC gets to decide who his coordinators will be.) Play tough through next year, with an eye on being a serious competitor starting in the year following. After next year, with a young and growing-in-skill OL, you look to get a quality QB and/or RB through the draft and/or free agency.
- I've got a strange feeling that Mitchell will be a #2 wideout next year.
- If 2010 and an uncapped year isn't the time to cut the fat from this decomposing team, I don't know when we could. I now believe that we have some growing cancers that must be removed.
- AH was worth the money. He could get a season-ending injury next week and I'd probably still think that. What a difference a legitimate DT makes.
- I would say that we have the most overrated secondary in the league, but I don't think anyone really respects us any more. Horton is about the only player I'd try hard to keep going into next year. I don't know what happened to Landry. It's like he got shell-shocked at some point and has never returned to form.
- If I became GM for a day when this season ends, I'd immediately release Portis, Sellers, ARE, Moss, either Hall or Rogers (but only one of them), and probably Landry. Campbell could stay as a backup QB. (I think he'd make a good backup: generally safe, well-paced and poised, can come in and manage a game.) Moss could stay if he returned kicks and played slot receiver. Who will replace them? Well, let's just say that a rebuilding phase can't get much worse, and at least this way we free up a ton of money and make space for talent that's willing to fight tooth and nail for a shot in this league. Enough with players who have a sense of entitlement. We need Art Monks, Brian Mitchells, and Hogs.
i agree with everything you said, except moss in the slot, hes not big enough to handle that. hed get pushed around and end up on his face

I have a feeling that Mitchell will be a #2 wideout THIS year...
I think our coaches move a little too slowly for that. Case in point: punt returns.
The difference is, the first string Punt Returner is already an established failure. We have no established failure at the #2 receiver slot!
I believe the failure at the punt retuner spot is the same failure at his #2 spot...
ARE is the SLOT receiver at this point. The #2 has been one or the other of the sophomores...
