Instead of cutting someone who's well paid and then offering vet minimum, they could have offered a renegotiate that was better for both parties. Obviously they didn't value his services very much.

I don't think it's possible to renegotiate to the vet minimum. It's a business, but it seems Marcus got his feelings hurt. His agent could probably get them up a little bit over that deal, but he would have to be realistic about what his services are worth. They obviously would like him to be a Redskin... just at market value.

I agree. I like Washington, and hope he and the team find a way to reconcile. He would be an extremely valuable backup. However, for two years we paid him starting money for a backup-worthy performance, and that's enough charity in my book

I didn't say renegotiate to the vet min... I guess I should have stated clearer what I intended. They could have renegotiate closer to the vet minimum and let him know their intentions. Who knows, maybe they did.

Maybe I should have been clearer also. I don't think a team can renegotiate a deal downward in money. The only way to renegotiate is to go up in overall compensation. It is also possible to rearrange the payment schedule for cap purposes, guaranteeing future monies. But if you are looking to cut salary, the only way to do that is to terminate the contract, or cut the player. Then you can negotiate a new deal, and the way to begin a negotiation with a back-up is with a low-ball offer, and then go up from there.

It's certainly not uncommon for players to refuse to face facts on what their realistic worth is.

Marcus thinks he can still play, but his track record over the past couple of years shows he's injury prone.

I'd imagine his agent is telling him to hold out and see if he can get a better deal, but I don't think anyone is going to offer him more than the vet minimum unless they are suddenly in a desperate situation.

We'll see what happens...

I guess I shouldn't try to appear more knowledgeable than I actually am. Terminate contract, offer less money new contract to continue to sport burgundy & gold. Alternative, hit the bricks.

That's exactly what they did. Remember also, that the vet minimum for a guy of Marcus's year is $745,000. It's not exactly chump change.

Marcus Washington could be a guy that is signed off of the street if someone goes down either in training camp or during the season. I don't see much of a need for him unless one of those situations that I described were to happen.

I'd like to see Marcus re-signed.

That way I can still wear his jersey and not have to buy anymore this year. Damn they are expensive.

I miss the 2004 Marcus, not the current Marcus that still hasn't found a team. Just watched Joe Gibbs 2nd game back and Marcus Washington looked like an entirely different player then what we've seen the last 3 years. I couldn't even believe how quick he was. Wow. Trust me #53 declined big time.

He did decline, but not happy to see him go. Hope we pick him up again for way cheap around he end of training camp.

Seconf favorite modern era Redskin behind Jessie Armstead.

Haha, I know, but for some reason he was one of my favorites. He was a good player for being pretty old.

My two favorite modern era Redskins were Mike Barrow and Jeremiah Trotter.

Back to Marcus... I'll miss his enthusiasm and energy on defense, but he did decline pretty significantly the past few years.
