It's funny though, as we see our FO back off a bit from the free agent signings that include monster contracts and huge bonuses, other teams have now fallen into that very mold.
The fact is, free agent signings are now very prevalent in this league and are a viable and strategic way to upgrade your team. But as soon as Snyder even thinks about signing a free agent, all of a sudden the local media and the fans get their panties in a bunch and cry that Snyder is just trying to
make a splash in the headlines and trying to buy a championship, when in fact, every team is doing it.
Just look at Jerry Jones. His official title is "GM/President/Team Owner". He signs just about every free agent he can get his hands on, many of which with criminal or morally questionable backgrounds. And how many playoff wins do they have in the past 12 years? Yet it doesn't seem that he faces half the criticism that Snyder gets. Not saying Danny doesn't deserve some, but for petes sake, other teams are now far more involved at handing out huge contracts to free agents then he is.
Point being, perhaps there is some evidence that Syderatto are getting better.
I agree, cautiously, though I think the next 2 years are critical in this analysis.
For example, 2 things that pop into my head:
1. Seeing if Snyder avoids the temptation to fire Zorn this offseason and go after the splash signing like a Gruden or Shanahan.
2. Seeing if the FO signs a big-money guy like Haynesworth, which would indicate that they're still in the "one player away" mode, or if they continue to sign more modest, value free agents (such as Fletcher and Smoot).

Basically the argument was that we needed to stop signing big free agents who were going to take us to the Super Bowl in year one and develop our team through the draft. Now, as you say, we kept 9 of the 10 and wow, we didn't go to the Super Bowl! Our players weren't all starters the first YEAR!
So, our choices turned out to be, SIGN a crop of FA's who will take us to the Super Bowl the first year or DRAFT a crop of rookies who will take us to the first year!
The knowledge I'm gaining from the bashers is STAGGERING! How do they come up with this intelligence? Where do I get the Kool Aid they keep serving each other?

When is the first indication of when we'll know? I think March the first is the first day they can start talking to the FAs right? I'd be happy if we traded Moss and traded down once in the draft and got as you put it more modest FAs like Fletcher. I don't know if it's been floated on this site about trading Moss? I know CR has been.

The more I think about this, the more I am thinking that CP should be traded if it's possible. Get something for him while you can. I say this for three reasons. 1) He has hit his peak and we could still get someone pretty good for him. 2) He is injured all the time. 3) He openly critisized the coach on the radio. I mean, come on. I love you CP but you are not bigger than the team here. This is called being a cancer.
How many rookie running backs come into the season and end up making it big the first year? It happens quite a bit. Seems like the model should be, draft a RB in the 2nd through 5th rounds and let it be a revolving door. Drop the player when his rookie contract is up. That gives you another four years to find another rookie. Why pay BIG money to have a RB stay?
Maybe I'm missing something here.

You're missing the cap and an overall team strategy. At best this argues we should CONSIDER trading him. But what is the cap implication? Are we planning to use our #1 on a replacement? If not what round? Why do we think we can get someone adequate in a LATER round? How does it impact all our other needs?

As with past drafts, there have been some extremely good RB's picked up in rounds 2-5. This past year was no exeption.
I think if you follow the trade through, you'll find that it may make some sense. You can try for a RB replacement in rounds 2-5. If one does not pan out to start this year, Betts did very well as a starter. You would bring in someone from the trade...maybe a d-tackle. Use the first round pick on a o-lineman. Use the remaining draft picks to start building depth at LB and d-tackle. In future drafts, you make a stab on a RB in rounds 2-5 and keep the revolving door moving. Someone will pan out for a few years, and then you replace him with another younger kid. Look at some championship teams and how they have approached the RB position. They are all young and have not been in the league too long (under 5 years.
Steelers with Willie Parker (undrafted) picked up Mendenhall this year to take his place soon
Cardinals with Tim Hightower (5th round)
Patriots I don't even know who starts
Colts passed on Edge and picked up Addai in the draft
Tennesee
Giants

All you did is repeat that he could be replaced. You didn't address either the cap or how we are going to deal with the rest of our needs given that you're advocating taking one of our 4 draft picks to replace CP.

I answered all but one of your questions...that's all I did. I have no idea what the cap implications are. I'm a poster on this board, not a GM. You tell me what the cap implications will be.

This "board" is not the totality of
this site and, among other things, it contains a
salary cap table so that with two clicks, you can have those facts at your disposal.

I see, so when you go on with a list of reasons that we should trade CP, you're a poster not a GM and another poster shouldn't ask you how you would deal with the impact of your proposal. I'll put that point in the circular file.
