To be fair Archuleta does have dreamy eyes ... he's all "I'm about as effective as a napkin floating from the nose bleed seats when it comes to pass coverage" and you
really wanna get angry with him and say "stop getting beat over the top" but then he winks and you're all "oh, gosh, it's OK, here is $4 million"
Are we seeing your softer side.....? Falling for Arch's "dreamy eyes"..... hehehehe
too funny

This guy's 34 years old. How much time does he have left in the NFL? I'm sure he's a good guy and was great at one time, but he's seen extensive playing time from his stats. I still think that LM could have stuck around as a back up and been better overall than this guy.
As for Campbell, he's a ST stand out, THAT'S why he's still here.

Yeah, it seems like we panic whenever a starter goes down. This reminds me of the mad scramble for TJ Duckett last year, when we already had capable backups on the roster.
Does anyone really think that Rock Cartwright could not have carried the ball the whopping 13 times Duckett did? But we throw out a 3rd rounder for him. Now we release a proven, versatile starter who is not a star, but is servicable, and bring in a 34 year old LB who was about to retire? All because Washington is out for 2 weeks???
Unbelievable.

I wonder if Danny had enough of Gibbs telling him not to spend the money and did this behind his back.....WHY WHY WHY WHY????

Timing does seem a bite odd, but Lemar Marshall was average at best. He stood to make 1 million this year, maybe that had something to do with it. Randall Godfrey is a solid journeyman, and as I remember it he always played us solid when with Dallas. He is only 31, still has some game left, and 11 years experience. I like the move, still 3 weeks to get "coached up" on defense.

I think the coaches were behind this move. Godfrey is another former player for GW.. But then again, so was Lemar Marshall so i still don't get it.

I wish Lemar well - he did a good job for the Redskins, and deserves our thanks. But the injury to Washington changes the dynamics of the linebacker situation, and I believe that the play of HB Blades so far may also be a factor. Clearly, Campbell seems well liked by the staff too.
I assume that the defensive staff feel more comfortable with the idea of plugging Godfrey in to the mix than they do with Marshall. Marshall seemed a fine back-up on paper, but perhaps the staff had seen enough of him over the last two years to have decided that they'd prefer to have somebody else, if it becomes necessary to put that reserve out on the field.
I agree with you, UK.
I think there is a player we are failing to factor into this equation; Rocky McIntosh. Marshall's natural position is WLB, the very spot Rocky currently holds.
This is nothing more than speculation, but maybe after Rocky's 'average' performance last year, Marshall could have been thinking there was still a good chance he could be the starter at WLB. Now, after Rocky has impressed the coaches during the offseason with his diligence and work ethic, and after his impressive performances in two preseason games, well... maybe Marshall figured out he was not going to start and asked to be released. One report
did say the Skins tried to trade him but had no interest from any other team.
We have our starters; Rocky, Fletch and Marcus, and that's a solid group. Godfrey's role is simply to add depth in case of injury. So I agree with UK and Fios; I liked Lemar, but I'm not all choked up about his release.
I actually like Blades, K Campbell and Godfrey as back-ups, and the jury is still out on Sartz, Sinclair and Trucks. So I believe we are ok at the LB position.

I wish you well Lemar! Thanks for all the great games for the Skins! True class act. Stuggled a lil last year at MLB but this is no way to go out! He should have been the backup to Rocky!
Thanks again Lemar! Best of luck to you!

SkinsFreak, you're killin' me. Those backups you're pleased with aren't very promising in terms of being able to start if needed. Blades is too raw and small right now (may be good next year), Campbell is injury prone, and Godfrey is a old dog that has to learn a new system. Rocky got injured last season and hasn't played a full season yet. This sucks.

Let's face it. Lemar Marshall was a good starter at OLB and an excellent backup. Losing his services hurts. I thought he'd be the a key on the defense and with MW going down, it was coming to pass.
Look for the Giants to pick up Marshall and get our defensive playbook to boot. Man, that was either an incredibly stupid personnel move or Marshall get fet up with some crap people were giving him. This makes no sense. Like shooting yourself in the foot.

OK, there are -slightly- more diplomatic and better worded ways to put these thoughts but ...
... like he said.
I cannot believe it. You let a solid backup that knows the system at various positions go? Do you let your former QB on defense go like that?
Something happened folks. We just do not know about it yet.

Dude, I said I "liked" them, and I think I'm entitled to that opinion. I never said they were Pro Bowl material.
Blades is "too raw and small right now" ? Um, yes, he's a rookie... and what... is he going to grow a few inches over the next year? Are you saying Fletch is too small too? Campbell has been impressing the coaches and maybe they feel he is healthy and deserves a chance, based on their "first hand" knowledge. Godfrey has played for Williams, so he doesn't necessarily have to learn a new system. In fact, I'll bet they signed him because he
knows the system. Dude, you're killing me!

Let's face it, you, along with the rest of us, do not have all the facts. Perhaps Lemar was not playing well or had developed some kind of attitude because he was demoted. I would have to think the coaches know much more about the player and the situation then we do.
Fact is, we simply don't know. But if Williams thought he wasn't performing up to par, then I agree with Williams decision to release him. Trying to draw conclusions, like saying this was a stupid personnel move, without knowing all the facts is pretty weak. They made this move for a reason.

This is straight out of left field. He must have requested to be released. Going from starter to backup must be tough. He helped this team out alot in 2005. I wish him well.

Every year on every team players are cut who started the year before. That's why they call it Not For Long. Lemar just wasn't giving them what they wanted. Some of you guys act like this is abnormal. But it's the norm. The defense was 31st in the league. They told everybody they felt the problem was the back 7 and not the front four. And they're sticking to that. Lemar will end up on a team before the end of camp.

I agree, but he must have known this was coming, going from starter to back-up that is. Here's what makes me think that...
Lemar has been a starter for us at WLB and MLB, right?
Well, we moved up in the draft to get Rocky, a WLB, and we aggressively pursued a MLB, Fletcher, in free agency. That tells me they were not sold on Marshall. Everyone said Fletcher was a major upgrade over Marshall and Rocky has been impressive so far this year.
I've always liked Marshall, but it's not like his performance over the past three years was all that impressive. IMO, he's a career back-up at best. And the fact that no other team had any interest in a trade for him tells me they feel the same. He may sign with somebody, but no one was going to give anything up for him.
Like RiC said, something happened that we aren't privy to, and we simply may never know.

I always liked Marshall but he sucked last year. Our LBs were horrible last season and getting rid of Marshall and Holdman were good moves in my opinion.
I think the Redskins have a future Pro Bowler in Rocky McIntosh (I really do) and I love the addition of a veteran tackling machine in the middle in Fletcher.
The LB corps should be far better this season than it was last season.

2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 71 | Key
Alert: AD
Comment:
Godfrey is experienced, instinctive and pretty athletic. He has good recognition skills and can get to the ball quickly. He still has good range inside the box. He can slide, stay square and attack downhill. He will square up and hold his ground when stepping up at the point of attack in two-gap technique. He uses his hands well when taking on blocks. He can avoid and separate from blocks when moving downhill. He is a good all-around tackler. He has above average zone awareness. He is decent in coverage in underneath zones. He times up zone blitzes well inside and on the perimeter. But Godfrey is aging, has declining athletic skills and has become more of a two-down player. He lacks great cover skills. He is cut high and struggles to react quickly and change directions off zone drops. He isn't especially explosive in stack-and-shed mode. He has trouble keeping his feet clean when moving through trash. He has some durability concerns.
Marshall is rated similarly but IMO he is an undersized linebacker who was suddenly disposable because of McIntosh and we went out and got another LB who can play at any linebacker spot who has the size and ability to fill in well at any position. Godfrey forces fumbles, gets to the QB, can even come up with a couple INTs I think he is a great veteran asset to the defense.
