Can we please stop talking about Patrick Ramsey? Good grief, he's gone. Why not discuss Babe Laufenburg or Cary Conklin?
Jason Campbell is the Redskins' starting QB for next season. Mark Brunell will restructure his contract and stand on the sidelines for the year. That is the beginning, the middle, and the end of it.
Isn't it?

WOW, I couldn't agree more. This thread has been driving me nuts, I can't believe it has come this far. Can we not look back so much at the misery that was Patrick Ramsey and look forward to the wonderful JC. Someone start a we believe in JC thread, no Ramsey convos allowed

Perhaps you ought to inform the Redskins Store of that fact. Last time I was in there (Potomac Mills location), they were still selling his jersey! Sure, it was discounted, but not by much!

Yes on the first line, maybe not on the second. Mark may prefer to go elsewhere; it's still too early to know for sure. Hopefully, we won't be keeping him at his current price.

I don't understand why we went to Billy Kilmer so soon, I think Sonny Jergenson had some zing in his arm still.

He didn't suck in preseason. He was superb the season before and more or less helped the Skins end the season respectabily (against first class competition) rather than end in disgrace. He played well in the first game of the season, throwing for about a 100yds and 1 touchdown (called back) in a little over a quarter.
By the way, when Ramsey was benched by Gibb's on that famous pretext, he was the top Redskins ground gainer over a four year period, dwarfing the outputs of Brunell, Portis, and all overs. He was averaging about 200 yds a game and a TD and a half per game, inspite of the fact he, for the most part, was throwing to terrible receivers and behind a horrible line.
He DID suck in preaseason. I saw all his snaps and he was terrible. He was NOT SUPERB the season before though he was OK. An average of 200+ yards and 1.5 TDs can be good but it ain't superb. I think as Gibbs watched the preseason unfold he began to regret he had named Ramsey the presumptive starter. But he did not want to renig so he hoped for a good reason to bench him other than several bad performances. I maintain (and have not heard a good counter-arguement) that Gibbs was looking for a reason to bench Ramsey. My evidence is that 1) He did. 2) When healthy (perhaps in the same game) Ramsey was not brought back in. 3) Bram Weinstein was at every practice and predicted it on the air before the season started.
As for Brunell, he was a good pick-up for WAY too much money. I'm guessing that if Gibbs had just waited a month or so he could have signed him as the "veteran back-up" who helps groom the young guy and steps in if needed for something like 2 million a year.
Oh well, he has played terribly AND great for us - sometimes in the same game. In a way, we cannot afford to cut him. He still MAY end up being very valuable.
DarthMonk
Brunell's presence on the team has been extremely destructive to the Redskins and Gibbs' reputation. Brunell had a good game last year, a miracle game and a few other good games the year before, and has, at all other times, played either poorly or managed to win by handing the ball off to Portis and letting the offensive line grind it out or by throwing dink passes that even Collins can complete. The reason Skins fans have trouble with perspective in regard to Brunell is because of their adulation of Gibbs. Everyone else in America, including commentators and sportswriters, know the Brunell-Gibbs relationship has been a joke.

Still working on that quote function? You know one thing you don't have is the top teams will be scrutinized and gloating when they lose. I've mentioned how from Ka(lama)zoo I was a Lion fan as a kid until I moved to the DC area. Sure, there are jokes about them occasionally but who really cares? When teams like the Skins don't win we get scrutiny. Who says Lions were really that disappointing? Compared to what?
I love the Red Wings in hockey and it's the same. Any loss is jumped on by the losers of the hockey world like the Toronto Maple Leafs who haven't won a Stanley Cup in 40 years and are showing not the slightest indication that drought will end anytime soon.
On one hand it's tough when you are looking to contend for a championship every year, on the other it's far WORSE to know you will not content because you never do. You should consider that.
One question, are you really that hung up on Ramsey? He never played that well for us and is warming the bench in NY now, why is he that big a deal to you?

I'm just afraid Gibbs will "Ramsey" Campbell. He benched Ramsey for no logical reason, why won't he do the same to Campbell!
Yes, exactly. This is the biggest worry I have. What happens if Campbell takes a nasty hit early in the season and has to sit out a quarter? Will he ever see the field again during the season? What if he has 2 mediocre/bad games in a row and gets hit? Most coaches might still give him a couple of more games. Gibbs may just put in Brunell and have him at the helm the rest of the season. That would be a disaster IMHO.

I'll take care of the Redskins business first. Spoke with Mark Brunell today and got the impression a new, cap-friendly contract with the Skins will be done in a few days. He seems pumped to have a chance to come back.

This is great news. It's awesome that he's willing to come back as the backup and that this is the only team he's willing to do that with.

This is the only team he's willing to do that with because this is the only team that will give him a contract.

the day that happens is the final day of my tenure as a redskins fan (which began as a child).
as much as i hate gibbs, i can't even see him doing something that stupid this year. he has to see that campbell is the future.

Coach Joe Gibbs has been a big supporter of Brunell, but with Campbell now the starter and Brunell carrying a $5.2 million salary (and $6.7 million salary cap figure), both sides were amenable to restructuring.
In such a deal, Brunell, 36, likely would end up with a considerably lower cap figure, with a portion of his salary converted into a bonus, and a base salary closer to $1 million. Although he would make much less than $5.2 million, he would have job security for next season and some guaranteed money from the new bonus. Base salaries are not guaranteed in the NFL, and each team must fit under the $109 million salary cap.
Brunell, who has reworked his contract repeatedly in the past, was acquired from Jacksonville shortly after Gibbs returned to coaching in 2004, lost his starting job to Patrick Ramsey midway through that season, became the starter again early in the opening game of the 2005 season and became Campbell's backup in November. Brunell has said previously that Washington was the only team for which he was interested in being a backup in 2007 and that his recovery from labrum surgery is going well.
Should Brunell complete a restructuring, third-string quarterback Todd Collins could opt out of his contract and compete for at least a second-string job elsewhere.

I just went through all 7 pages

WOW Some people here really surprise me with their ability to twist things around.
This is really simple to me - we have 3 QBs right now in Campbell Brunell and Collins. I think it is fairly obvious to most of us that Campbell is the starter and I think Gibbs and Saunders have more faith in Brunell as the back-up. They want him to stay if the money is right - Brunell restructures and we have a back-up and a mentor at QB, that, IMO will help Campbell be a better QB. I would imagine that the only thing to worry about here is who will be the #3.
Gibbs and Saunders seem to really like the progress Campbell has made and now we hear that he will be here during the next few months to work on a bunch of stuff like his mechanics, and such with the QB coach to try and be even better.
I think Brunell is an excellent choice to be the back-up and I believe he will be a very big help in making Campbell an even better QB because of his experience. If we end up getting another QB in here who might become a better back-up than Brunell we still would have benefitted from having Brunell here to help Campbell - there are very few QBs around right now that would offer as many plusses as Brunell. This is a win win for Cambell and for the Redskins.

I think he really could be if given the chance. If he got the reps, I think he could really be a decent #2 especially with his knowledge of the system, he just needs to learn the speed of the WR's.
Why string Brunell along and delay the fact that we will need another #2 soon. Why not groom Collins at #2? Brunell can still teach from the 3rd position? Brunell is getting older and will he have what it takes physically if JC goes on IR in week 5? Thats my biggest concern. As soon as Brunell steps on the field the line of scrimmage will be crammed.

I just don't understand keeping MB at #2 when his time here is limited? Is TC that bad? If Todd is that bad where he can't beat out MB for the #2 then he needs to go. But I don't think he's that bad and keeping MB at #2 is just a way to keep him happy and from leaving.
Todd has a few years left and if he's going to be here then he needs to be getting A LOT of reps with the 1st group of guys.

Todd is here for his mental knowledge of the system to help with JC. I don't see him being used for more than that. If I remember, we are sending a QB over to Europe right. He was with us last offseason as an UFA.
