I agree 100%, but I think right now we should focus soley on the pass rush and get someone serviceable. I'd expect improved play from our current group of "average" players with a good rush.
KazooSkinsFan wrote:You're not actually arguing against that, just you are thinking maybe we get by awhile if we can't get plan A. I just think at this point we should be looking for plan A. I love Springs, but he's not staying healthy and not getting younger.
Yep.
My thinking based on what I'm hearing about free agents and draft evaluations is we go for the best UFA corner available and the best lineman available with the #6 pick. I would take a DE or DT, whoever is best. Our line's not bad, but not good enough, if we get a stud lineman that will help the others whatever position they play.

I don't think anything will improve this team more than a standout game-changing defensive lineman. We've seen the difference that Griffin can make when fully fit, but he's not getting any more durable, and another stud on the line is a must. I don't care really if he's an end or a tackle - just get me a pro bowl lineman!
I think you can get by with average corners if you have a great line, but great corners will struggle to cover up a mediocre line.

I agree, I like Griffin. My theory is this. If you look at Griffin's stats from now all the way back to his rookie season its like this. Yr 1, 5 sacks/ YR 2, 2.5 sacks/ YR 3, 4 sacks/ YR 5, 1 sack. You see the pattern here, every other year. Next year I think he will have a good one. And we need another Lineman or Two to step up with him.
As far as Smoot goes. I think we should throw a low ball offer over to him. He takes it great he don't oh well.
You know if he did came back, every one here on sunday, would be screaming
"SMOOOOOOOTTT"

This is also what I think everyone is hoping to achieve. We need help on the D and it begins with the front 4 and works back to the DBs. I would love to think that the #6 pick is going to be that talented but I think we are safer with finding a FA that can be our pro bowl player now and drafting the future pro bowl player with that 6 pick. Rarely does someone go to the pro bowl as a rookie defensive lineman. Getting those 2 players would be huge and would make guys like Griffin, Carter and the others a lot better. Then we really need a MLB that understands what is going on and can inspire and lead our defense - the secondary will become brilliant with just decent players and we will have ourselves a top 5 defense again.

Yes, I agree 200%. Good corners would struggle even on a good day.
I'd love to have a legit #1 DB but we have to get out of this shopping spree mindset. We don't need to get everything right NOW. Thats what causes us to mortgage the future. Lets get the MOST IMPORTANT cog to our broken machine, the peice that effects the entire mechanics of the defense. Right now, that cog is DE/DT. Simply placing a stud DT/DE will have this machine running better with the same squad of LB/DB.
If we can find a decent DB for cheap, then lets do that this year. But lets not piss away more 1st and 2nd rounders for players...

There are several very good CBs available as free agents this year. No draft picks needed to be spent.

Well thats good to hear, I just started paying attention again. I've been so irritated with this team that I've gone on a football hiatus.

Yeah, it seems the 'hype hangover' was pretty brutal this year, wasn't it?

Freddy should have never left, sure hindshight is 20/20 but he left for not a whole lot more than what he would have got here the only difference was he would have made more money the first 3 years with Minny than the deal he would have got here. Signing with the Skins would have given him a big signing bonus and small base salaries for about 3 years (his base would have been about $1M in 2007) He signed with Minn took a smaller signing bonus with larger base salaries with the base jumping each year, next year his base goes from $800K to $2.7M that's why you rumors of him being cut. At the level he played last year $2.7M is a issue for the Vikings that wouldn't have been a issue here (even at the level of his play last year). Now he won't get the one year in the contract that was the deal maker.

Well put. He made the mistake. I personally think we can do better. I think he should shop himself and come to us only if he can't get the money he wants and is willing to return to his NFL roots for a reasonable salary.
If we sign him out of the gate, we will have to overpay him becuase he's not going to accept what he's worth until he finds out he can't get what he thinks he's worth. And he's just not worth what he thinks he's worth.

This subject came up at work today, a co-worker made a few points that made me think of this discussion.
Our conversation went something like this:
Smoot stated he didn't want to leave the Redskins, because he liked the area was a reason he gave before he ever mentioned the money he had signed for. He's gotten the money now and may have a chance to get back to the area.
Not being comfortable where he is playing can account for his drop off in play (after a big payday- see AA) could be a reason. He went as far as take a boat ride to get familuar with the area and the locals (we all know where that went).
We've talked about all this before in this thread but in the end he gave me the one fact that has been missed on this site. Smoot wears #21 and will more than likely want that number back. If so will he make a Portis/Iffy type deal? or Will if all be settled up front? We concluded that the "the Danny" is already having Taylor and Smoot name tags made up, and word has been put out not to destroy those Duckett jerseys just yet.

Hmmm, is this to suggest they might trade Betts for some real value in return, and have a Portis / Duckett combo in the backfield next year????????
Hmm... my initial reaction? Not such a bad idea. I really like Betts, but I'm sure with the holes the o-line was making, Duckett could have done just as well, if not better than Betts did.

Wait a minute, didn't we just sign Betts to a new deal?
Ignore prior post.

Status quo: Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot and coach Brad Childress still haven't had their postseason chat.
But Smoot reiterated Thursday what he told the Pioneer Press last month.
"I would love to be a Viking," he said. "But I am nobody's bench rider. Fred Smoot is a starter."
After making $800,000 last season, Smoot's base salary in 2007 jumps to $2.7 million, and he is due a $2 million roster bonus in March. If he were released before that bonus is due, the Vikings would save $400,000 in salary cap space and nearly $5 million in cash.
Last month, Smoot said he would not accept a pay cut and isn't worried about the prospect of being traded.
"I just want to be somewhere I'm wanted," he said Thursday.
