You promised me that you would keep that a secret, Boss. . . ;furious;

Well, at least try to keep that info from getting out--you know that I'm looking for a job this summer. . .

I think country singer Junior Brown should get an honorable mention at least. He's a great musician and is a lot of fun to watch play. If you never heard of him, he has a country/blues/roadhouse style and plays both electric guitar and steel guitar himself. He designed a combination of the two called the "guit-steel" which is an electric guitar on top and steel guitar on the bottom so he can switch back and forth mid-song. The song "Highway Patrol" was probably his biggest hit here in the States.

Oh! Please do! It is the offseason!

Yes, I am trying to show that there are A LOT of great players beyond the continental US that play at least as well and probably better than the best US players you have included in the "best" players list.

This is an endemic cultural problem in the USA. Whereas people from all over the world would recognise several of the best US players, you seem to have mirrors on your windows. If you do not see youselves reflected, it is not worth of any consideration.

Let us establish one premise here: the guitar as a string instrument was not invented in the USA. A LOT of great players had already achieved fame and fortune in the inetrnational scene and national countries -before- some of your best players ever got to achieve any fame.

One of the best players in the country that invented guitar, Spain, is Narcizo Yepes. I would be surprised if anybody has heard of him ever.

Yes, I am arguing that there is a cultural bias in the USA. I am willing to argue that many of us outside the USA know a lot more about your culture and your country than most of you do know about other countries and cultures.

I am arguing that this is sad.

I can argue about a professional league, a game and a team with the best of you and be right or wrong about it but with equal competence and information whether it is NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL. How many of you would be willing to do the same in another league, game or team in another country?

Soccer anybody? Rugby? Cricket?

This is a serious problem that is reflected in many decisions made within the USA about other countries and other people. For a country that is the -only- superpower left with tremendous influence over the media and news coverage all over the world, the amount and quality of information that is projected back at you is pathetic.

Take a look at the BBC or Sky (English), TV5 (French), TVE (Spanish), CBC (Canadian) or German international news coverage. You would not recognise the news from any of these compared to what you watch and hear daily.

This bias develops a sad misunderstanding among many nationalities about your own country and your own people. What am I trying to prove with these posts, you ask?

I am trying to highlight a cultural bias that benefits nobody. The lack of knowledge and recognition of international talent (together with your own) creates resentment abroad against you without even taking notice at home.

But I guess that it does not matter, as long as the criticism does not come from someone at home.

By the way, talking about drums: I collect musical instruments, including drums, from all over the world. The most recent acquisitions are from India/Pakistan (Tabla set) and Arab (Rhamany) drums.

You might wish to check in the internet links to Drumfest held in Halifax and organised by a friend of mine to see the broad international cultural coverage included in a little province in eastern Canada over the last few years.

If you like the Cadets, you might wish to check Squidfor precision drumming in Nova Scotia and Drum for a travelling show. Oh! I forgot, only US drummers are allowed.

Do you play or just enjoy listening?

And I agree, the only guitar and drum players worth mentioning in this board are from the USA. What was I thinking? ROTFALMAO

OK, seriously....

I'm impressed by the breadth of musical tastes on the board. Some favorites I've heard: Chet Atkins, Roy Buchanon, Michael Hedges, Junior Brown, Trey, and Wes.

For strictly technical and speed playing no one beats Michael Angelo Hall...But its all flash and no substance. I respect Al Di Meola and Stanley Jordan but I can't really sit down and listend to them.

Some names I didn't hear mentioned:

Kaki King - in the style of Michael Hedges
Adrian Legg - I've never seen anyone change to multiple tunings and capo positions within one song with out stopping the music....If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it.
Jimmy Bruno - He lives up the road in Philly. For strict Bebop no living player can beat this dude.
John Frusciante - Don't know why but I just dig this guys taste.
David Gilmour - This guy isn't going to win anyone over with his chops but I can't think of another classic rock player with the sense of melody and phrasing that compares...his solos take on thier own meaning and lives on the recordings.
Nick Drake - While the sullen misunderstood genius who dies young has been way overdone, this guy had rocksolid fingerstyle chops. You can actually hear how strong his fingers are.

But if I had to pick one guy it would be....

....ME!.... Just kidding.... it would be Django Rienhart. He had the chops to stun any of these speed rockers and he invented multiple styles and techniques...He's the Jelly Roll Morton or Scott Joplin of the Guitar.

Glad that you didn't take offense, RiC. . . :)

I said:

I understand some of your sentiments, RiC, but I think that you're being obtuse to make a point about American bias that might not even have relevance here.

I agree with you wholeheatedly that this is a sad thing, and that it is something that reflects on us poorly on many levels (international perception, the 'ugly American' traveler :|, etc.)

However, I think that this is irrelevant to the current debate, as much as you see this thread as a microcosm of larger issues. I think that your problems with this thread begin and end with the thread title, but that you're using rolling eyes and dispariging remarks to. . .try and convert people to a broader mindset? ;)

At any rate, it still seems to me that it takes 2 seconds to realize what someone actually means if they start a thread on here about the 'greatest guitar players'.

I've been playing drums for about 9 years now. Started with interests in rock but soon moved to jazz once I started seriously studying the instrument. Nowadays I play whatever gigs I can get (rock, jazz, gospel, musicals, blues, jazz-fusion, latin, funk), but at the end of the day my true loves are jazz and funk. I also love talking about drums and have wondered if there are any dedicated drummers here on THN. (I know that JF and Redeemed both play, but that's about it).

How about you, RiC, do you just collect or do you also play?

I am at the most productive and exciting part of my professional career. I have no time or life to do many things that I enjoy.

No fly fishing...

Some cooking... but not enough

No time to practice any music ...

Redskins games... some but not all

I play the guitar enough to serenade my wife when she was my girlfriend and the drums just well enough to show the capabilities of a drum but none well enough to say that I really play.

I am interested in musical anthropology and the ethnic musical heritage of various cultures if that makes any sense. I have this stupid theory that if you get to know the food (and its preparation), music (and its instruments), architecture (design and materials) and sports you can get to really know a lot about a country and its people very quickly.

It seems the more obvious people have already been mentioned, so I will try and do some justice to more overlooked guitarists.

1.) Derek Bailey - Brilliant free jazz guitarist. If you are interested in any type of free jazz you need to check him out. He is a guitar visionary. Not for everyone.

Both of these albums are good starting places

2.) John Fahey - I'm suprised he wasn't mentioned yet. Excellent solo acoustic performer. Kind of looped in with the folk movement of the 60's. Completely instrumental. Played with more emotion and feeling than any guitar player I can think of. Hendrix included. Pick up "Yellow Princess" before anything else.

3.)Fred Frith - Excellent guitar player. He was in a late 60's/early 70's prog rock band called Henry Cow. He has done various other projects for the past 30 years and continues to record. His solo album "Clearing" is superb.

Honorable mention- Keiji Haino - Japanese guitar wonderkind. He doesn't exactly "play" guitar, but more or less beats the crap out of it.

Do air-guitarists count? If so, I'd have to put myself at the top of the heap. No one can beat me at air guitarring Eruption by Van Halen!

I'm with you on this one. It's one thing to be able to shred some scales. It's quite another to solo with dynamic melodic articulation. His solos can tell stories without words.
