What the hell?

That's a lot of money for a 3rd stringer isn't it?

Oh well, maybe Collins will be 2nd on the chart this season...

It's not that much. It's not veteran-minimum, but they want him. When you want someone, they have the leverage. All in all, not a bad pickup at all.

Let's remember this quote. Even as a fan, I think we're being delusional about our situation at QB. We seriously are a Super Bowl contender if this quote was true. The reality is that Brunell AND Campbell are big question marks.

First of all its not like we have a physically resilient starter. Brunell is not likely to be significantly healthy all season, and when he plays hurt, becomes more of a liability at times. This guy is most banged up QB including veterans older than he is.

And NO ONE will or should bet a franchise on a young QB, especially based on a college career of a team with two top-10 draft picks at RB.

With that in mind, a 3rd string QB becomes a major issue like it was on the Jets last year.

Interesting that the Washington Post has Collins signed to just a one-year contract:

The Washington Redskins have signed back-up quarterback Todd Collins to a one-year contract, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

I don't think Brunell is a question mark, he proved to us that he is a solid veteran quarterback... and none of us really know anything about Campbell, reality is everyone who's actually seen him play thinks he's a future superstar. I think he would fill in very well if needed.

The most important thing Collins can do for us is to ease the transition into the Saunders era.
I know that the systems (Gibbs/Saunders) are similar, but there are definitely nuances and minutiae that a well-versed assistant can help with.
That the assistant is also a quarterback is nothing but a plus. Great move, in my opinion.
Nobody is asking him to move mountains, nor is he expected to be the second coming of (insert name of the last great FA QB here).
He's here to smooth out the bumps and run the practice squads...if he should happen to be the best guy in camp, my mind will be blown.

Todd Collins' agent is under the impression that his client will be the primary backup next season. From the Daily Press:

Collins, who will receive a $450,000 signing bonus, is the sixth player acquired by the Redskins since the start of free agency. He is expected to work behind starter Mark Brunell, while second-year player Jason Campbell develops.

"They were pretty clear that he'd be second-string," said Collins' agent, Brad Blank.

Very interesting. It's weird because everything we've heard about Jason Campbell, which admittedly is not much, has been positive. And when you see him at the Wizards game next to Antwaan Randle El, you have to believe that he will be in the team's plans sooner rather than later.

That being said, it does make some sense for Collins to be the primary backup - at least in the immediate run. This team figures to be a legitimate contender, and should Brunell tweak something and be forced to miss a few snaps, Collins may very well be the best guy to step in. If Brunell misses a larger portion of time, I would hope it would be Campbell getting the nod.

I guess we'll see. It will be very interesting to see what Gibbs has to say about this.

Hmmm...thats an interesting twist...

I hope you're right and that this doesn't mean that Campbell isn't developing like they hoped!

It makes sense to me. Collins has experience, and he is competent. Campbell has talent, but he has had one year of learning. If Ramsey stays, somehow or someway, then Ramsey would clearly be the number 2, and $450K is no big deal. But without Ramsey, it's not wildly crazy to have an experienced, though limited guy on the bench.

Is Collins as good as Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerrfel, or Tim Hasselback?

Gibbs is known for bringing young quarterbacks along slowly, unless his hand is forced. Even when he is ready Mark will be the starter, if Brunell goes down and JC is ready Mark may never see the field again. But it would depend on when and where this happens.

For a short amount of time Collins could fit the role until Mark recovers or Jason gets up to speed with the starters (Backups don't get a lot of time with the 1st unit). Like I said before it would depend on when and where this happens and how long Mark would be out. I'd like to hope anything over a game and a half would mean Jason would go in.

It'll be interesting but we'll never see/understand what Joe does with QBs (other than win  )

Wow ..........now some of you are saying dude should be our #2. Collins is no savy vet.....he diddnt even play from 98-00. This is quite posiibly the worst QB aquisition in the history of the franchise. Rob Johnson where are you?

Gus is out there and available. Bet he'd a signed the Collins deal.

The worst QB situation in franchise history? Were you asleep during the 90s? Is there a small, teeny chance that Al Saunders knows one or two things about quarterbacks?

im ok with picking him up for depth and teaching the system, but i really dont want him as our #2... unless the depth chart goes campbell, collins, brunell. Basically i really think we need to start developing/seeing what Jason can do. And obviously i would rather see brunell playing than collins at this point. so we'll see...

Gibbs has also never had a young quarterback as talented as Campbell. Humphries and Rypien were both sixth round picks, and Schroder (a third round pick), did play immediatley (played 9 games in 1985 and threw for 4109 yards in his second season).

I'm not sure that there has been a real precedent for this situation.
