Isn't it ironic that the Bush administration fought so hard to save Schiavo's life, yet they adamently oppose stem cell research? What if the use of stem cells could have positively affected Schiavo's recovery efforts? Makes you think...

I believe the administration adamently opposes/ed embryonic stem cell research.

Tis true Redeemed, but the most promising research on finding a cure(s)/relief/recovery/etc. for many debilitating diseases comes from embryonic stem cell research. The debate on stem cells would not be hyped nearly as much if embryonic stem cells were excluded from the discussion. In fact, if you just add "embryonic" before "stem cell" in my last post, then I made my point.

Mind you, I have not revealed my 'position' on this issue - just trying to point out a little bit of irony.

You might also agree that embryonic stem cell research gets the most press versus regular stem cell research, not necessarily because of "more promise", because those with a hidden agenda make the most noise about it.

I do agree with that. It is a valid point, and it is very true.

However, the issue also still remains:

...There are currently several limitations to using adult stem cells. Although many different kinds of multipotent stem cells have been identified, adult stem cells that could give rise to all cell and tissue types have not yet been found. Adult stem cells are often present in only minute quantities and can therefore be difficult to isolate and purify. There is also evidence that they may not have the same capacity to multiply as embryonic stem cells do. Finally, adult stem cells may contain more DNA abnormalities—caused by sunlight, toxins, and errors in making more DNA copies during the course of a lifetime. These potential weaknesses might limit the usefulness of adult stem cells.

But, to advocate the other side, we can also keep in mind that researchers have recently found evidence (via animal testing - it's also in the info above) to suggest that adult stem cells might have more flexibility than previously thought - good news for the ethical scientist.

But, suffice it to say that, currently, the benefits of embryonic stem cells outweigh those of adult stem cells. Food for thought.
