1.. good for him for shooting back, I'm 99% sure everyone here in that same exact situation would've done the same thing. Don't be hypocrites about that.

2.. if you guys haven't played college football in Florida, you shouldn't even comment on it.

In Florida there are so many colleges and most of the players are from different rival neighborhoods. (If you don't know what I mean by rival neighborhoods than you shouldn't even read this) They take that stuff very seriously and genuinely hate each other. I only know this because my cousin was a Gator and he grew up down there. I'm not even gonna say I have a problem with a guy who in COLLEGE did this.. he didn't do that on the NFL field did he?

Stop ya'll crying.. if ya'll don't want him here, use football facts like he gets burned or something.. stop bringing up other stuff that doesn't matter.

Not to mention that most of the kids playing college ball in Florida played each other in high school, and there is always tension when schools like Miami, UF, and FSU play the second tier schools like FIU, FAU, etc. The brawl was started by FIU when one of there players post-play basically body slammed Miami's holder after an extra point.

With that said, Merriweather's isn't that great. Bottom line is he free lances too much. Even in college he got benched a few times for being out of position and he was even moved to nickel corner at one point. Hopefully our new secondary coach can work on him some.

For me I am ok for the most part with what players do on there on own time so long as it does not affect the players abilities on the field. Just ball out and everything will be fine.

I like the signing of Merriwhether. My only concern is will he work hard enough to regain some of the talent he came into the league with. So far he hasnt been the player he was projected to be. Just work hard for our team and all will be well. Its not like we gave him a huge contract. So I would love for him to work hard and make the Redskins the place he finishes his career. Maybe we will see flashes of ST? You never know. I am hoping for the best.

Ok I see where your at now. I should have clarified. .I didn't grow up down there, my cousin did and played for a real football program. I was a Dolphin.. (insert corny joke).. from Jacksonville Univ.

Y'all say what you want about Doughty... somehow, he manages to hang, year after year... and it's not because the coaches are idiots.

Freelancer. Zero coverage skills. Dirty player/headhunter taking unnecessary penalties. Poor tackling technique.

All season long - heck, for the past several seasons - Bears had a problem at safety yet in many games he suited up and didn't even get on the field despite his relatively high salary.

In all honesty, there's only a few real real real good Safeties anyways.. I just want one who doesn't get burned. Why is that so hard???

The coaches love his work ethic and how hard he trys... That said he isn't fast, short, can't jump, and not particularly strong. His set backs are athletic ability he lacks. He plays the position the best a guy w his attributes can... He simply isn't great but decent across the board. Great vs the run great special teamed just not a starter or number 1 guy. Coaches keep him cuz he is cheap and works his tail off. Not because he is a cheap "starter"

He works hard, studies hard and is mediocre on the field. He is a liability out there and was picked on everytime he was out there. He's not a great run stopper and sure as hell can't defend the pass. He's just a hard worker... A sufficient back up.

I don't think I would call him a bum. He's a decent backup that keeps ending up in our starting lineup!

I disagree with that. That's the one thing he does well. He might be the surest tackler on the team. That being said, I don't want him in pass coverage. That's why he needs to play SS, not FS.

Unfortunately the Skins seem to be facing two imperfect options:

start a safety (Doughty) who is smart and in the right position but who doesn't have the athleticism to be a playmaker

or

start an athletic, talented safety (Landry, Meriweather) who doesn't play smart and isn't always in the right position.


However, in theory you can coach up football smarts. Not sure you can make Doughty any more athletic...

Rather have Meriwether or Landry than the bum ( Doughty )

We have 3 safeties at present in Landry, Doughty and Meriweather
OK Gomes is a safety but we're not really sure of his capabilities - we might also move Hall

I'm not as down on this position as some of you guys

YES - it could be better but it is not as bad as OL or CB IMHO

Reed Doughty has managed to hang onto an active position at safety with 3 different coaching staffs now. Yet younglings, who have undoubtedly played at a high level in the NFL dare to come in here, and call him a bum. Somehow, though, when others disappear, he is there, plugging a hole.

Comments like this are disgusting. I'd rather have Landry or Merriweather too... but when they are serving suspensions for cheap hits, or out because they refused to have their fragile Achilles repaired... guess who will still be there? Yeah, all he does is work his ass off, and study, and play the position the best he possibly can... no accolades are going to come his way. He's just going to work... BTW... you do realize that this "bum" does all this with a severe hearing loss, right?
