Yes, on this point we agree, and I 'd like a nickel for every time we've made this statement since 1991. I will also say that the optimal time to be "stuck" with a starter for four years is when he is 30 years old. Cousins isn't going to fall off a cliff with his production over the next four years. It's just that his production may keep the team around 9-7 or 8-8 for the next four years. For what could be the highest salary in the league. No reasonable person is going to think that the market should justify that. The thing is Cousins is on borrowed time because he absolutely has to perform this season regardless. He's not being franchise tagged at $35MM. Either he signs a contract in DC or he takes a massive pay cut over what he's been making annually to play elsewhere. Shanahan might have a love affair with Cousins but he isn't paying him $30MM a year and neither is anyone else. He's not capable of putting a team on his back. He's not in that class. He has one season to prove he is in that class and justify to every team looking for a QB why they should pay him more than Aaron Rodgers when his production says he's Andy Dalton. Or maybe not even. Hasn't Dalton won a playoff game?

Maybe you're right. But I sure like his odds playing for Shanahan with the 49ers better than I like ours starting Colt McCoy.
agreed ... we should have signed Cousins to a LTD and now we should not
we just can't afford to pay Cousins what he should get ... time to move on
same ole same ole - maybe we'll get lucky & find a franchise QB to build around - we certainly don't have a FO that has a clue about NFL QBs

Somebody is going to pay Cousins what he wants. Why can the 49ers afford to pay him but we can't? I don't see any reason why that is true. I would also argue that because we've been more committed to building the core of the team through the draft the past several years, we're in better position than ever to pay a QB.
Fact is that just like that $19m/yr contract looked crazy two years ago, his price tag today will look cheap two years from now. He won't be the highest paid QB for long.

I would say because the 49s are a complete mess and they intend to build a team around Cousins.
They had no one waiting to take command after the Kapernick debacle. We stumbled upon KC and realized he was legit after our own RGIII debacle.
So maybe the FO sees that KC is only one piece in a larger puzzle that is slowly starting to take shape.

I think with Colt he won't play 16 games. He has an injury history so that is his problem. But I do think with Colt the team will hone in more on running the football and will run a tighter ship. With Cousins they know they can sling the ball out there 40-50 times. But with Colt they would be more disciplined in having a balanced attack. So essentially if Colt was the starter, there would be a decent chance that they could win just 8-9 games as well.
You seen it happen in Dallas with Dak. They played more controlled, error free football and had a better balance attack. Also benefitted their defense with controlling the clock.
I believe we lost every game but 1 when Kirk passed over 36 or more times. Won every game he passed 35 or less times. As many of you all seen, our team was in most games where as we didn't have to pass that much. He had over 600 pass attempts which is ridiculous when you look at how we were never blown out of games and forced to pass heavy.
Watch out for Nate Sudfeld as well. I projected he could be an NFL starter after year 3. I liked him at Indiana just as I liked Kirk Cousins at Michigan State. Both had a few rough edges but Nate is a player and I think he just needs time to learn the NFL game. The only negative for him is our offense is not really suited for him. He is more of a 7 step drop guy.

lol. I love DC. We're going to let the guy who passed for 4000 yards go cos we got Nate Sudfeld in our back pocket. Love you guys!
I guess I'm done. It is what it is or whatever its going to be. As long as we're banking on late round draft picks though to fill the QB need, maybe we should bring Colt Brennan in for a workout?

ONLY HERE BRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've read so many things about letting him go like we have a full arsenal of backup QBs who will get the job done and lead us to the superbowl.
Dude, if Phillip Rivers is STILL the QB of the Chargers, how is there even a discussion NOT to give Kirk that deal?
*sigh*

No, we're going to let him go because he won't sign a contract and we're not paying him $35 million for one season.

BINGO - the choice is to sign him and not be able to pay everyone else we need to build around him
or
go back to hoping that the guys making the decisions get V. lucky because they sure as hell don't know what they're doing

another 8 or maybe 9 win season and many saying "we've had 3 winning seasons in a row ... we're getting better"
this is just so frustrating

Who said they prefer Nate Sudfeld over Cousins on this board?
It is always better to bring up yards per completion rather than passing yards. Passing yards can be skewed depending on the amount of completions and attempts. Only been around 20 QBs in history with Kirk's attempts in a single season. What was solely impressive was the yards per pass completion, which was among tops in the league. Makes sense though when you have the #2 wr in history in yards per catch (with over 400+catches) (Desean Jackson). Another note is Colt McCoy with the same amount of pass attempts would have had 4,432 yards basing on projections of his last season starting (2015). McCoy would have also gave up a million more sacks based upon the same projection.
Kirk is no question a good qb at yards per pass and also completion percentage. He's a top 5 guy in those categories year to year.

There's always that. If its true that Cousins just doesn't want to sign here under any circumstances, then there's not much more to say on the subject.

Its crazy, right? We've had how many staring QBs since 2000? 14? 15?
You'd think the fan base with that history would understand how hard it is to find even a decent QB. Ours is complaining that Cousins' red zone percentage was down last year, time to move on.
Don't get upset, friends. I'm just poking fun and laughing because otherwise I'll lose my mind.

nonsense - really?
I just don't think that Cousins is worth what he's going to get & that's mainly because we screwed up, not because he's a really good NFL QB
I hope we find a QB to build around but I totally agree that the guys in charge here don't have much chance at doing that so maybe they should just give Cousins whatever he wants and then they can say they can't afford to add all the other good players we need
no worries - we'll be better next season

Recent reporting suggests this is about what Kirk and his agent proposed after our low ball offer last year.

So if we offered him $150 M for 6 years with $100 M guaranteed, he'd say "No thanks, I'm betting on myself." ???
Let's try to stay within the bounds of reality.
OK. I'm not asking if you think we will sign him by July 15 or not. I'm asking, what is the minimum offer you think we could make by July 15 that would get a "Yes" from Kirk?
You seem to think he has no reason to say yes to
$110 M for 6 years and $44 M guaranteed. What do you think would do the trick?
Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:OK, assuming he would sign any contract I think five years, $100MM with $50MM guaranteed would get it done. That would put him around #6 overall in guaranteed money, including Luck's new contract.
This would certainly look like a relative bargain right now.

Four years at $100 million with $50 million guaranteed would be a bargain right now.
Next year it will be three years at $100 million with $50 million guaranteed.
There's a pattern here and it favors Kirk Cousins.

woulda, coulda, shoulda - how is this helping? we should have done a lot of things differently - this franchise is not very highly regarded for a reason - how we handled Cousins is just one of many stupid things we've done - we need more accountability from top to bottom
hopefully we don't continue to make the mistakes we've made but until this idiot owner stops meddling I don't see much changing here
we all know what should be done - with Snyder making the decisions, there really is no hope for that happening

Look here ladies and gents. Kirk's wants to set the tone for qb's in the future. He already said so in so many words. Skins would have to offer him 28-30 range per year with high bonus for him to sign this year. Derek Carr deal won't get it down where there is a expectation of a higher salary next year and possibility to go to 49ers

Cousins is a far better QB than anyone else we've got - the question is should we pay him whatever it takes to keep him here or realize that he's not ever going to be worth that amount and hope that we can find someone else to build the franchise around
we don't have anyone in charge here that knows a damn thing about managing this franchise so it really doesn't matter how much we pay him or for how long - with or without Cousins we're a mediocre to bottom 10 franchise - having Cousins sign a long term deal here is not going to make much difference - he's not that good
Cousins is very fortunate financially that this franchise misjudged him so badly and doesn't have a clue about what it takes to put a competitive product on the field and there's no doubt that he would be better off playing somewhere else and making the same money as if he stayed here

Its obvious management dosn't want him here, 11th hour offers are not what is important to Cousins. He's gone, out'ta here.
