http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/redskinsb ... rk-cousinsPHILADELPHIA—Is Kirk Cousins the franchise quarterback the Redskins have been searching for?
In the last nine games Cousins sure has been acting like one in his first year as the designated starter. He has 20 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. In those nine games he has had a passer rating of under 100 just twice. The Redskins have gone 6-3 since Cousins heated up including a three-game winning streak that pushed them to the NFC East title.
What makes this interesting beyond the effects on the field is that Cousins is slated to be a free agent after the season. In other words, Cousins is making himself some money.
The Redskins are going to do everything they need to do to hang on to Cousins, up to and including locking him up for 2016 with the franchise tag. That would keep him in Washington for a one-year guaranteed salary of about $19 million.
Even though they will have the cap space to do it, they would rather not go down that road. The $19 million hits the salary cap all at once and that’s a pretty good chunk even out of a cap that is currently estimated to be over $150 million. And if a contract impasse still exists after the season, the tag for a second year is at 120 percent of the previous year’s salary. So then Cousins would be a $23 million quarterback in 2017.
The Redskins probably would like to have more of a track record to go on before deciding on just how big a payday to offer Cousins. They have seen this before. After the rookie season of Robert Griffin III the organization would have offered him the sun, moon, and stars if he was a pending free agent. But injuries and other issues reduced him to a shadow of his old self. If they give a big deal to a quarterback who doesn’t pan out they would have had a massive hole in the salary cap with not much production to show for it.
However, they don’t have more time to make a decision. He will play one more regular season game then one or maybe a few in the playoffs and then the organization will have all of the evidence it will have to figure it out.
It is hard to say what will happen right now. A playoff win or two would greatly enhance his value. The one prediction that can be made with confidence is that Cousins will not hit the open market. He will either be signed or tagged by the franchise designation deadline, which comes eight days prior to the start of free agency.
Think its interesting. Very true Redskins would have given RG3 a huge contract after his rookie season if he was going to become a free agent. Obviously a nicely structured longer deal is more idea. But franchise him if you can't, let him show the team he is legit a second year. I just hope the front office doesn't structure a deal that really hurts the team's options, for instance the Flacco deal who got way overpaid.

We will offer Cousins a fair deal - if we have to franchise tag him that's fine too - we're not mortgaging our future over this guy and if he wants that type of deal then we really don't need him here anyway - I don't know Cousins but he does not seem to be a greedy guy
there's a lot of BS speculation going on here - I'm not worried about this franchise with this FO managing things

Looking out for your future, life after the GAME, is NOT greedy. He has already earned himself a handsome payday- that just keeps getting bigger. While he is new to this contract structuring process, his agent is not. If he feels he can get Kirk more, or that we lowballed the first offer, he will hold out for more (rightfully so).
I'm not worried about how much money we like into his bank account, I'm just glad we have Bruce Allen to put together the best contract for both parties. Signing bonuses, performance incentives, and bonuses, need to orchestrated as such that is lucrative to Kirk as well as being spread through out to limit the weight of the cap hit.
Speaking of which, man am I excited to see what we do in free agency and the draft... Getting all our guys healthy (Gillette, Culliver to name a few) and adding some new talent via the draft and FA, has the future looking bright for this squad!
HAIL ya!!!

I think it's apples to oranges. There was an injury history with Griffin, and he did in fact get hurt (twice) in 2012. They certainly would have been more cautious with him based off of that alone. I don't see the problem with resigning Cousins to a 5 year incentive-laden deal that wouldn't hurt the team a la the Flacco contract.

Most of which don't actually address the question, so there's that.

Its an Internet message board and none of us are employees of the team. If everybody just comes on here and repeatedly posts "Scot McCloughan is going to offer a deal and Kirk Cousins will either sign it or not", it would be a pretty boring discussion.
Speculate away.

OK - there's a lot of 'speculating' going on that really does not make sense when you consider who is involved here Cousins is not at all like Flacco - my 'speculation' is that the Redskins will most likely get Cousins signed and Cousins will most likely sign a very lucrative contract
I don't see the Redskins or Cousins having an issue with this as both will not want a contract that either is unhappy with - unless you think that the Redskins or Cousins want to put together a deal that is not good for both sides I don't see that happening here, knowing who is involved
Flacco and his agents were greedy, Cousins is not - PLUS Cousins is going to want to be the QB here - SIMPLE REALLY
Kirk Cousins wants to play QB here and he wants the Redskins to be financially able to add the players he and they both need
I like this speculating stuff

Me too, man. Is there any better sport for it?
And I think your speculation about the Cousins contract is spot on. I think they'll get a deal done that is good the QB and the team.

First 8 games I would have told you something different but Cousins have improved drastically and they have finally taken the hand cuffs off of him.
He's earned the right to be re-signed. The question is how much to re-sign him for. Do you franchise him knowing he's only had 1 good season (we've seen that story a few times before). Or do you give him a 3-4 year deal and lock him up?

It's a fact that my main objective here is to mess with those that hate RG3 - screw em

So, next year when RGIII is playing in Dallas and they hate him will you be on their forums?

I could care less about the pukes I just don't like Redskins fans that hate players on the Redskins roster - they are as bad as puke fans to me
BUT - I'll be here looking after you - & that's a FACT
I don't care where RG3 plays as long as he is in the NFL because that was something that you & a few others said he would never do

and it's only going to take a fair contract because both Cousins and the Redskins want to make it happen
it's all good

Something I don't understand is... Wasn't the option available to pick up next year for the 2012 draft picks like RGiii? Does it only partain to the first couple rounds?
Can't see us opting out of it, even back then. It'd definitely make more sense for him to negotiate a longer term deal like Wilson has anyhow.. just curious about what happened there.

Really?? Why am I thinking that can't be true... I coulda swore we locked up another player BEFORE deciding to lock up RGiii???
Kerrigan is who Im thinking.. not sure how accurate that is.
Very likely I'm mistaken and you are correct... Just seem to remember Reed or someone else from that class getting the 4th year option picked up?

We didn't pick up an option for Kerrigan, we just signed him to a new contract.

Two questions...
When do contract talks begin?
Does RG get cut before or after (or not get cutat all) before talks begin?

I am very curious to this. If SM is smart, he'd have already started this morning (or last night). From his behavior last night, it is VERY clear RGIII has already had discussions with the FO that he won't be back.
LITERALLY
EVERY SINGLE ONE of my Texan-fan buddies is telling me how they think Rick Smith (Texans GM) is going to make a play for him. The market for him is going to be significant. He is the best QB available, including the draft (although I admittedly don't know much about the upcoming QB draft class). They need to lock him up fast. There are a ton of teams (HOU, STL, CLE, DEN, NYJ, PHI, SF, and BUF) that would sign him for big $$$. If I were the GM, I'd try to get something done quick (while making it appear like I'm not pressuring or otherwise trying to move the process forward at a rapid rate). If I were Cousins' agent, I'd be taking my sweet time. So ---- how quickly we hear will most likely tell you who is running the negotiations.
He did nothing last night to lower his value given his 29-46, 329, 1 TD, 0 INT performance against a quality 2ndary. That being said, he didn't play especially well, but wasn't a bad "first playoff start" given the DEF not getting off the field and the lack of OL support. I honestly see his market value in the 5yrs - 80-100M range. I've heard an average salary between 17-19M from "experts" --- which I usually roll my eyes at, but this time I actually agree with them....
