Re: Start Cousins & Try To Make Playoffs
Something else to note from last nights Kirk's 102 rated 283 yards 2 TD performance against the Super Bowl champions, I think Cousins put a stake in the heart of any remaining "his arm isn't strong enough" critics last night. He threw several accurate long balls last night. He also threw a great bomb in Philly to Jackson, this combination needs to be exploited more going forward. No one is ever going to confuse Cousins' arm with Cutler's, Newton's or some of the other NFL cannons but Kirk has got plenty as we have seen so the defenses need to respect Jackson's deep ball potential with Kirk playing.
All in all a great performance from Kirk without help from a running game against the best defense in the league. His 102 follows rating performances of 109.4, 104.4 against Jacksonville and Philly. He imploded against NY but came back strong last night and it makes me eager to see the Cardinal's game. A win in Phoenix could start a roll!

Oldschool do me a favor and tell me what Kirk's record is in games he started? Those are the only numbers I care about.
Re: Start Cousins & Try To Make Playoffs
this from John Keim ...
how great would it be if we could go 4-0 the next 4 games and Gruden feel that Griffin is ready to start after the bye week
Tampa Bay at home .... ROCK AND ROLL baby
I wrote about this after the game, but the added dimension of Russell Wilson's legs had a massive impact on the game. It’s why the Redskins can’t (and won’t) give up on Robert Griffin III.

Re: Start Cousins & Try To Make Playoffs
I don't know about 4-0, but none of these next five games are against teams like the Seahawks. I'd love to see the team quit talking about what they need to do better and just go do it.
The Cardinals will be tough this weekend, but they're pretty banged up from their last game. They might even be starting rookie Logan Thomas at QB.

The Cardinals on the road are going to be tough but I have a good feeling about it I think the Skins are ready to win and start a run!

Since when have the Cardinals become world beaters? They may be starting their 3rd string QB, so we should be good to go against them.

I think you haven't seen the Cardinals play recently. They're 3-1, beat the Chargers and 49ers already this season, have two ridiculous WRs and a beast defense. Doesn't mean they're world beaters, but they're definitely the toughest team in the next five games.
We're catching them at a good time though for sure.

Re: Start Cousins & Try To Make Playoffs
At 1-4 with losses to two division rivals a playoff spot seems like a pipe dream for a team with the special team and defenses issues the Skins have but a win in AZ could turn the tide so I still have hope. I have to believe the special teams can do better this week and the defense can get the job done against Palmer coming off an injury or the 3rd string rookie. Hopefully these units can step up and Kirk and company can perform against a good AZ defense. A win would be huge and could get the ball rolling.

Honestly I think establishing the run game against a tough defense and doing what their supposed to do in special teams is the only shot of winning. Not relying on kirk to throw 200+ yards in a role he's not 100% ready is most important.

It would be a shame to waste the opportunity to compete for a division and maybe more with all this talent by using the season to have Griffin repeat Pocket Passing 101, the course he failed last season. Blame instructor Shanny if you want but it was Griffin that failed to learn the material. Thus far Griffin isn't effective for Instructor Gruden, maybe the pupil just doesn't have the mental processing ability to become a pocket passer.
I''d rather see them start Cousins who has the mental part it down, a respectable arm and is ready to go now. Can Cousins be successful? I think a decisive, accurate QB like Cousins could clean up. I don't want to hear about how things went last year because he didn't have these receivers last season, he'd have lots of open targets this time. Nor do I want to hear any BS about some ceiling you imagine this guy has after 4 starts because we've all seen after 28 starts that Griffin doesn't have an acceptable floor running Gruden's pocket passing offense, Griffin sucks. He is confused, indecisive, too slow and makes bad decision, Griffin is a sack machine and drive killer.
If Cousins fails to get them to the playoffs and they are eliminated then start Pocket Passing 101 for Griffin and try once more to teach him how to function in a pocket, but please don't waste a fresh season on this fools errand. The Skins wasted 2013 trying to get him effective in the pocket and the entire off season and he's clearly uncomfortable and ineffective, it might not be within him, I know it's not within me to waste fall Sundays watching a repeat of 2013.
I want to bring this back to light - most of us realized that no matter who the QB, this team was never really a playoff contender
so ... the notion that starting Cousins as the QB gives this team a chance to be in the playoffs is ridiculous and STUPID
now .... when we see that Griffin gives this team the best chance for success and that having Cousins as our very capable back up is a very good thing, I hope a number of the 'RG3 detractors' here will go back to supporting whatever team they are fans of

I may disagree with you but I strive to do so without being disagreeable so I am not going dismiss your hopes for Griffin as stupid. The team is 1-4 today so it may look impossible to make the playoffs but three weeks from now the team could be 4-4 and the notion of finishing 9-7 or 10-6 and making the playoffs might seem doable not stupid. I still think there is reason to hope our staff can clean up the special teams and the new starters in the secondary can improve and the run game can get on track enough to start winning. After all the Skins were close against Philly at Philly and even had a chance late against the Seahawks. Maybe the Redskins are going to limp through another disappointing year but I haven't given up on 2014 yet.
You and I are never going to agree on the QBs. I believe the promising young pocket passer Kirk Cousins is a far better QB for Gruden's offense and the NFL game and you still hope Robert Griffin is going to be a superstar. We both have hope, my is that Kirk can help them win in AZ get the team rolling and lead the Skins to an improbable playoff berth, we'll see.
As far as my notion that Cousins could be very effective with the receivers I think events have borne that out. Kirk has the offense moving and aside from a horrible second half has ranged from decent to good in some challenging games. Philly on the road is tough and Seattle is very good.

^ not much people (Philly fans included) would agree that their D is tough in any regard..
Rg3, like it or not, already IS a super star.
4-4 is doable... even tho we may face a rookie qb, that az D is pretty solid. A win would be uplifting no doubt, and ibptedict a solid outting from captain Kirk!

I said playing Philly is Philly is tough and I stand by it the Eagles are the best team in the division and its a tough venue.
Griffin a Super Star? In your view and maybe many others but I don't even think he is competent when playing and now he's hurt again.
I want 4-4 and and sense of possibility yet this year. I hope everyone brings their A game to AZ.

Just because you stand by an opinion doesnt make it fact.. we can agree to disagree but the fact that the fecals have trailed nearly every game if not every game at half to even the worse teams in the league suggest pkaying them at home isnt as fierce as you think. Furthermore, playing them at home is like a home game- those god awful fans booo the team their own players etc nearly every game!
Feel free to elaborate, or all together change your statement. Super star status isnt my biased opinion, its a matter of fact. Being a super star doesnt require someone to be a perennial probowler, nor to have any sb rings, and not even mean he is an elite qb. I know how you fel about him, you know my opinions as well... RG3 is a household name, records on the field, and record jersey sells, point to super star status.
Winning. The mutual ground we can enjoy. I hope we are catching Az on an off game- but they are still at home and the best team to not make the playoffs last year. Seeing how they didnt miss a beat with the back up qb, it wouldn't surprise me to see the rookie find success vs our patch work dbs. Hopefully, though, its another feeding frenzy for our pass rush furthering Kerrigans lead in qb sacks!

it does not matter who is playing QB for either team - the QB has nothing to do with how effective the defense or special teams plays are
this game (like most games )will be decided by the team that plays better as a team
NEITHER the Redskins or the Cardinals are making the playoffs based on who is starting at QB
we'd obviously have a better chance at the playoffs with more effective play from everyone else on the team NOT just the QB
I am hoping that we lose some pseudo fans here at THN when Griffin comes back and shows them how stupid they are

A lot of these "pseudo fans" would prefer a team called The Washington Griffins. The man-love for that one guy is kinda creepy. I wonder if they have wall-sized fatheads in every room. And, maybe they have all his Subway commercials playing on a loop with tape of the fabled 2012 season.
I personally don't think Kirk Cousins has the goods either, but I know for a fact he has more of what the head coach wants in a QB. If they can create a team that plays better AS a team, and has better depth on defense and a better O-Line, then Cousins might be enough to get the job done.
It would have been awesome if Griffin could have been a franchise QB with the body and mind to fulfill the hype. Apparently it will take him being in a wheelchair, permanently, for some of these people to accept that he cannot deliver on what his hype promised. Not to mention, Griffin was a Shanahan acquisition. Shanahan is gone and so is the primary interest in that Griffin project. Make no mistake, Robert Griffin is a project and a fragile-body-project to boot. Shanahan rode Griffin like a government mule and ultimately broke him.

I think pocket passing and a variant of the WCO is the way to go and I like Gruden's offense with Cousins playing, he's done enough to give me hope. On the subject of Griffin do you really think Robert was Shannahan's decision? I don't have any inside information but the big trade, make a huge splash always seemed like classic Dan Snyder overreach to me. Maybe Shannahan wanted Griffin but I don't believe the public pronouncements about Snyder's role in player acquisition. The Cousins selection in the 4th after Shannahan coached Cousins in the Senior Bowl reinforced my suspicion Snyder picked Griffin. Further I feel Griffin may have been always been distrustful of Mike Sahannahan because he didn't feel like Shannahan's choice. You might be right Griffin came to Washington because of Mike Shannahn but I feel it probably happened over Shannahan's objections. I think Robert has always been Snyder's dream pick and Snyder may still have that dream.

Regardless of who wanted him most (and Snyder probably had the $-signs in his eyes, too), Griffin is broken. Not only is he broken, but he has always been too fragile for the NFL. I really like Robert Griffin as a person/individual. I also really wish he COULD HAVE delivered on the hype and hopes that he came with. But, after watching him for 2 1/2 seasons, I know for absolute certain that he has definitely peaked.

we can discuss other things in other threads - this one's about starting Cousins and making the playoffs
I think it's pretty clear to most that Cousins is not at that level yet

I agree. Its kind of depressing and embarrassing looking at this post whenever I go on this site. How about we stop talking on this post and start other related ones. Clearly Cousins is not the answer. The question has been answered.

Fortunately, it didn't take long to realize that Cousins is NOT going to cut it. It didn't cost very much either. 4-6 regular season games? 4th round pick? At lest we know. Griffin is a much more costly, much longer decision or acceptance as to whether or not we cut bait and find a new QB. I still think the team needs more than that one position. The team and organization needs much more.
