Wait wait....so we're saying this whole incident was helpful? Life's crazy....you try to shoot someone and that's actually helpful to the team?
That's crazy...but whatever...

THE NEWS

Redskins' safety Sean Taylor entered the offseason upset with the six-year, $40 million contract he signed before last season. Now, he is at risk of losing a significant portion of the bonuses that make up the bulk of that deal. The Washington Post reports that if Taylor should miss any mandatory practices or games due to his legal problems, he would relinquish the right to future bonuses, according to the Washington Post. Furthermore, should he default on his contract in 2005, the Skins would be eligible to reclaim $6 million or his $7.2 million signing bonus. In all, Taylor could be forced to return $10 million this year.

OUR VIEW

Just as the Browns didn't push the issue with Kellen Winslow's signing bonus until they knew for a fact that he would be sidelined this season, Redskins' officials probably won't play hardball unless Taylor is convicted of a felony. We'll keep you posted on Taylor's legal and contract problems throughout the offseason.

WE ARE NOT CUTTING SEAN TAYLOR.

Please people, no more of that. It's absolutely ridiculous to think the Redskins should cut their best player.

He's 22 years and he's already among the elite players in the league at his position. How would cutting him and letting him go be a superstar for someone else be beneficial to us? We just invested the 5th overall pick in this guy last year, and we're just gonna let him leave the team because he's had some legal problems? Do you see the Ravens cutting Jamal Lewis? (who was also selected 5th overall and is several years older than Taylor) Of course not.

Trading him is almost as stupid. What are we going to get for him? A future draft pick? At best right. His trade value could not be lower than it is right now. Let's say we do get a pick for him, what are the chances we turn that pick into a 22 year old whose already among the best players in the entire NFL at the position he plays? No chance in hell.

Basically, Taylor has us by the balls right now. The kid is completly out of control, and needs to be disciplined, but what can we do? In addition to being a complete headcase he also happens to be an OFF THE CHARTS talent. Mel Kiper called him the best safety prospect he had EVER seen. And please don't give me that nonsense about safety not being an important position, because it is clear that in the right system a great safety can dominate. Ed Reed was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last year. Rodney Harrison starred for the Patriots throughout the playoffs, having a game altering pick-six in the AFC Championship game, and 2 picks in the Super Bowl. Brian Dawkins has been the backbone of the Eagles defense for half a dozen years. I think Taylor is on the verge of being a player like those guys.... actually in my opinion he's going to be better than any of them. Getting rid of him isn't going to help anyone. I trust Coach Gibbs to handle this situation correctly. Taylor WILL be a Redskin in 2005 and beyond. I just hope he gets himself straightened out both on and off the field. He has the ability to be one of the all time great Redskins if he does.

Gibbs is handling this things BRILLIANTLY!!!

A lot of people might say why is he excusing himself from off season workouts, yet he's o.k. for July 31st. What a brilliant tactic by Gibbs. We OWN Sean Taylor, and by going this route, not only will we own him, but we'll own him at a good price. The only place he'll be going if he doesn't shape up is down on the depth chart. In any scenario, he'll be with the Redskins and it'll be dealt "in house". Gibbs is working his magic again!!

What FFA, JPFair gets a pass?

Uh, HELLO? It's the complete OPPOSITE!! We have him by the short and curlys. His value as a players and leverage for contract re-negotiations have dropped DRAMATICALLY over the last week, plus he's signed for a few years. We OWN him!!!

I completely disagree. Yeah, we have the leverage in contract renegotiations now. But were we really going to redo a 2nd year players contract anyway? I highly doubt it.

Overall, Taylor is in the position of power. He shows no respect for authority. He doesn't return the head coach's calls. He gets arrested. He skips workouts. He's not even in the same state as his teammates!!! But what can we do about it? Nothing. The bottom line is that he is too talented a player for us to get rid of, no matter what kind of stuff he pulls. Do you think the team would put up with this kindof crap from Andre Lott?? He'd have been cut weeks ago.

Taylor has all the control here. He's an extremely valuable commodity, and he knows it. We need him out there on the field. He doesn't need us. If we cut him, someone else would immediately sign him and insert him into their starting lineup.

Taylor's "position of power" has rapidly decreased over the last week. He is no longer, as of now, the valuable commodity that you mention. It's not about power anyway, it's about ONE thing only, depending on who's point of view you take. For example:

1- If you look at it from Coach Gibbs' point of view, it's about the Redskins as a team.

2- If you look at it from Taylors point of view, it's ALL about money.

And, quite frankly, Sean Taylors stock has dropped over the last week and he has a lot of work to do to get back his bargaining power for a long term financially lucrative contract. How does he do that? He performs on AND off the field. That benefits the team. Joe Gibbs is positioning this scenario to benefit the Redskins as a team, not Sean Taylor. Sean Taylor, in order to get the money that he undoubtedly wants and feels he is worth, now has to work hard to get what he wants. Up until this week, he didn't have to work nearly as hard as he does now. NOW, he needs to go out and prove:

A: That he has matured into a responsible adult both on and off the field.

B: That he is worthy of more money. He hasn't done that yet. Even his own agent will concede that Sean Taylor has to go out and work harder now to make the "BIG PAYDAY".

Sean Taylor is at the mercy of the Redskins right now. And, NO ONE should even utter the words "cut" cuz it's NOT gonna happen. Joe Gibbs is not going to cut Taylor no matter WHAT happens.

We DO have Sean Taylor by the short and curly's.
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

I also agree that Joe is handling this very well IMO AND I think that ST will very quickly "see the light" OR his agent will make it very clear for him.

I am in no way condoning Taylor's behaviour (or his agents lack of it!) but I think that this is a situation that can, in a way, work to our advantage.

Yes Taylor is a huge talent but now he has made a huge mistake (for him!) but a not irreparable error, IMO. There will be some punishment (from both the NFL depending on the case and from the Skins) but we (the Skins) now have control whereas before if we had "disciplined" him for his "tude" who knows what he might have done but now he has no place to go and we control the immediate future. My 2 cents.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'm with JP on this one. The ONLY situation I see where Sean Taylor gets cut from this team is if he goes to jail for three (or more) years. The trial will likely be next year, after the season is over. If he is convicted next year the Redskins will have the ability to get a significant portion of his signing bonus back - and probably would, mitigating the cap issue. If he doesn't get convicted then he's going to still have a hard time convincing the FO that he's worth any more money.

Great News!!!

...On another matter, Gibbs said he finally had heard from safety Sean Taylor.

After months of refusing to return the coach's phone calls, Taylor spoke to Gibbs by phone on Wednesday with help from Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Taylor had been the only unexcused absentee from the offseason workouts.

He has been told to stay away from Redskins Park following an arrest in Florida.

"I did talk to him, had a good talk with him, and Drew," Gibbs said. "We just kind of talked a little bit about the situation and everything and just kind of had a personal conversation. So we're hoping the issues can get cleared up to give the Sean the time to work on this."

Taylor is accused of aggravated assault with a firearm and simple battery following an incident involving a gun last week near Taylor's home in Miami. He is free on $16,500 bond with an arraignment date scheduled for June 24.

So does this mean no mini-camp, even if the trial is scheduled for after the season?

The following info is posted under Redskin History Thread. I think this is a good indication of what to expect.

" The most ridiculous notion being passed around these days is that the travails of Taylor represent something new to Gibbs. From the aspect of missing time from the team in a contract holdout, the minicamp from which Taylor has been excused will represent the only mandatory team activity he has missed. Under Gibbs, stalwarts such as Dave Butz, Mark Rypien, John Riggins and even the sainted Darrell Green missed mandatory time during contract disputes and it didn't phase Gibbs a bit. As far as legal issues, the trials and tribulations of Dexter Manley are well known. Gibbs welcomed him back to the team after each incident until his drug problems got to the point where he was banned from the NFL for life. In 1983, the FBI hauled starting safety Tony Peters out of the dorms in Carlisle, PA in handcuffs during training camp. Gibbs expressed hope that Peters was innocent. After Peters pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and served an NFL suspension that lasted a year and a half, Gibbs welcomed him back. Joe Gibbs isn't soft, he's a realist."

Rosenhaus offered to hold a conference call with Taylor, and he took him up on the offer sometime later.
