At this point, I have to wonder if he will ever return to the Redskins.
It's not that the foot injury is all that serious. In time, it should heal with rest. However, if and when Kelly is healthy enough to return to practice the Redskins will have a decision to make.
They could let him practice, play in any preseason games that may remain, and give him one last shot at making the roster. He was having a solid camp before the injury.
However, the Redskins would be taking a risk by letting Kelly back on the field. If Kelly gets hurt again--a distinct possibility given his history--the Redskins could be liable for his entire salary for the 2011 season.
The rational course for the Redskins might be to release Kelly as soon as the doctors clear him to practice. That way the team eliminates its exposure to liability for Kelly's salary and he can move on and perhaps attempt to catch on with another team.
Makes sense to me. Give him a chance to sign with some other team before the season starts. If this was any other of the last 4 years there'd be room for us to experiment with Kelly. But this year we have the happy problem of a very crowded WR corps, and I just don't see any reason to pretend Kelly fits into those plans.
I'm not sure why Kelly is still here either - maybe he has pictures
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

As patient as this team has been with gimpy, I mean Kelly, of we give up on him I can't see him ever playing on the NFL ever. Why would another team use a valuable royster spot on a WR that the only thing he had proven in the NFL is he can't stay healthy!

Aug. 24, 2011 3:46 p.m. - by John Keim - Stallworth's spot on roster depends on other WRs' skills
If WR Donte Stallworth does not make the final roster, it's because young WRs Terrence Austin and Brandon Banks can help on special teams as returners. Austin also is solid in the slot because of his quick feet. But he's a couple inches smaller than his listed height of 5-foot-11
WR (6): Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Anthony Armstrong, Terrence Austin, Donte’ Stallworth and Leonard Hankerson. Injured reserve – Brandon Banks.
Analysis: When I asked Moss if this was the deepest receiver group he’s seen in camp since joining the Redskins in 2005, he said it was – and he’s right. Niles Paul will be a good player, and the Redskins should hope like heck that he clears waivers if they cut him. The same goes for Banks, whose balky knee has put his status in doubt (I’d IR him and give him time to recover fully). Hankerson hasn’t been one of the team’s top six receivers, but as a third-round pick, some team would claim him because of his size and big hands. I didn’t have Austin on my initial roster before camp because of the numbers game, but he has flashed enough on offense and special teams to merit a roster spot.
I like Stallworth and I feel that he has made th eteam as far as play. but Niles Paul can play special teams, can block and made his one catch of a ball thrown to him. I don't see how you don't keep a 6'1" 220 guy who can play al STs even if he could clear waivers and go to the practice squad. That is the only issue I have with his picks.

He wasn't eligible for PUP. That's why Shanahan was pi$$ed. Kelly loafed around and never healed during training camp. As a result, they had to put him on IR for a Hamstring injury because he couldn't go on PUP.
Right. I remember that vividly. I won't be surprised if he is cut to get down to 80 this week.
KELLY deserves to be cut ..... injury not his fault but geeeesh how long does it take to get healthy

R4Ever, I'm totally with you on that one bro. I didn't like the fact we even drafted the guy who already had injuries coming out of college. Kelly must go, he's not even in discussions IMO about which WRs we keep... HE MUST GO!
1. Moss - Starter
2. Gaffney - Starter
3. Armstrong - excellent third receiver
4. Hank - high upside - still raw
5. Austin - best returner outside of Banks and has receiver skills
6. Paul - Can't risk him going through waivers - tonight he showed his value on KO returns.

My revised list before final cuts is:
Moss
Gaffney
Armstrong
Hankerson
Austin
Banks
I'm guessing that Donte Stallworth is cut in favor of Terrence Austin (a younger, faster, cheaper WR who plays more on Special Teams)
Malcolm Kelly is done. He makes me want to vomit.
I still think that Brandon Banks is a game changer on teams, and will be used from time to time on gadget plays.
All in All, I don't think Stallworth has outplayed Austin, and Hankerson has too much upside to release. Niles Paul and Aldrick Robinson should stick on the Practice Squad.

Why would this guy make you sick? It's not his fault that the Skins used a 2nd round pick on him. It's also not his fault for his injuries he's had. It's been bad luck. The one thing no one has done is question his conditioning every season. He's also worked very hard and has been mentioned as having the best hands on the team.

Because he's been sidelined with "soft-tissue" injuries. This foot injury. His MRI and X Rays were negative. His Hamstring Injury. Legit, but took him 4 weeks to realize he still wasn't ready and cost him a year. It makes me want to vomit because, at some point, pain tolerance and the desire to pay would have kicked in for this foot injury. A guy like Terrell Owens broke a leg mid season and came back. Kelly's spent more time on an excercise bike than the practice field.
BTW - Devin Thomas looked in good condition too. Where is he? I do agree the draft pick was a bad one in retrospect. Especially since Desean Jackson went after Thomas and Kelly if memory serves me right.

7. Banks
With Banks going not going on IR and being cleared to play. I found a way to keep him and keep Niles Paul as well. Keep two fullbacks - Young and Williams with Williams also serving as a third team RB.
Now we have 4 kick returners - Banks, Austin, Armstrong, and Paul on my roster. Shanny said you can never have too many returners.
Gaffney is more likely to make it than Stallworth as we traded for him. AA could be a shocker cut. I think these 7 end up with us one way or another once the season starts.

I do remember your SEVEN and at the time you posted it, it looked like a purty good seven even though most of us were doubtful that Shanny would keep seven. Now, that there is a plausible way to keep 7 WRs posted (It is plausible, don't cha think?), perhaps it is is time to drop Robinson and at least add Austin to your seven? I know you want to hang on to Stallworth, but I just don't see him keep ing Stallworth over Banks either, but understand your argument, though.
Aug. 30, 2011 6:51 p.m. - by John Keim - Time up for WR Stallworth? Improved depth will make it difficult this year for WR Donte Stallworth to make the roster. Stallworth has paid attention to the numbers. “I’d be foolish to say that I haven’t,” Stallworth said. “[But] I feel I’ve showed that I can still be effective in this league.” Redskins RapidReports

I agree except for the part we keep Austin and Banks. I say we pick one, the other's gone. But I don't think we'll keep seven either. So unless we're willing to cut one of the two rookies I think Stallworth's going to be the odd man out.

I think there is room for both Banks and Austin. Austin is a solid WR that may develop into a good, even very good WR, but is only an average returner. Banks may end up developing into an average WR, but probably not, however he is an elite KR/PR right now.
We don't have enough guys that are top 5 or top 10 at their positions to get rid of one. ey and Orakpo may be the only players that fall into that description. ey is a top five TE and Rak may be a top 10 OLB, but Banks is a top 5 KR/PR.
Keep both. Gamble that Paul will make it through to the PS and just cut Stallworth.

The only problem with keeping Banks is the current kick off rule. Unless we're bring the ball out from the back of the endzone - which is nonsense - he's lost 1/2 his value. He also has been injured both seasons with knee problems which is an issue for a guy who's main value is quick lateral movements which require very strong knees. Sorry - love the guy but I don't think the current make up of rules in the NFL and his health justify loosing depth at another position to keep here when we have other guys who can also do well.
