Were there free agents who could have helped the Redskins? Probably. But the Redskins just didn't believe the guys available were worth the cost.
If true, that's perhaps the most encouraging sign that our FO is learning.

I like Frost. Call me crazy but I like a kicker that shows emotion. When he took his helmet off a few years ago, that showed me he cares. When else do you remember a kicker who just exploded like that? I can't. But I'll take a guy like that on my team anyday.

The emotion is great and all, but I'd much prefer a kick that is actually effective at punting the ball.

I like that he was a LB in college and will actually hit when it comes down to it. Granted, I know he's the PUNTER, but itwould be a nice bonus.

Citing a source, the Washington Post reports free agent OL Jason Fabini will re-sign with the Redskins.
Fabini wound up drawing only light interest elsewhere. It's a little surprising that the Dolphins and old pal Bill Parcells didn't go hard after him.

Good, the more depth, the better!

Depth alone doesn't mean much. It doesn't matter how much depth you have if your backups aren't capable of adequately filling in when needed. Fabini, to this point, hasn't proven himself as a capable backup. He didn't play well when called upon last season and it's not a very good sign when an offensive linemen doesn't draw very much interest around the NFL. Hopefully the front office addresses the need for depth on the oline in the draft.

When called upon? You're right, he didn't prove himself as a back-up, because he was starting...
Fabini initially joined the Redskins in March 2007 and was expected to serve as a key backup. Instead, he was an invaluable starter at right guard when Randy Thomas and Jon Jansen went down with injuries early in the season.
Fabini ended up playing in all 16 games plus a playoff game. He helped the Redskins to the 12th-ranked rushing offense.

OK. So Jason Fabini isn't Russ Grimm. Unless someone has a better option for the Redskins, I don't understand the point of complaining about a player who was forced into a starting role next to a rookie tackle. And, then another rookie tackle. And then a tackle who was injured and played like a rookie. And then a defensive tackle converted to offense.
The guy could be cut a little slack.

While at the age of 34, he is not a long term answer, his versatility makes him a useful guy to have around. My guess is that his signing will hasten Wade's departure. Fabini can play G or T. Wade proved that he can't play G.

Exactly. We needed depth, as everyone has agreed. Fabini provides that. He at least has experience and played in all 16 games last year. You won't be able to say that about a rookie. Thomas should be healthy and ready to go. He tore his tricep, so it's not an injury that should limit him and his return.

It's Jansen I worry about coming back 100%. That was a horrific injury he went thru last year and as stated, he's no spring chicken. Let's hope for the best and we can see Heyer in spurts....

Thomas should be fine, but I agree with you about Jansen. He may understandably get off to a slow start and may not be completely confident on that foot. We'll see. I can see Jansen being eager and steadfast to re-establish himself after those injuries. I'm pulling for him but also agree the Skins will start considering youth for the future. I'm of the opinion that they should look to the mid to late rounds for line depth. But if we are able to fill a few other holes this year with good players, I'd be all for going hard in next years draft upgrading the line with starters, like taking tackles and guards early and often.

Don't you think it's just a LITTLE early to be talking about the '09 draft

Many analysts have pointed to 2009 as the year the Skins will need to overhaul the majority of the o-line. I'm simply saying we are set with starters this year, but maybe not next year.

No, actually, I don't. You don't go into business forecasting only short term. The roster is a business and you have to have long term plans. Are they set in stone???? no, but they have to be there. Always have all your options laid out and revisit your business plan frequently and modify as needed or required. How could you talk about the o-line and only talk about 1 year?

I think that we need to find an O-Lineman that could compete with Jansen for the starting spot this year. Hopefully, they will let Heyer have a shot at the starting job. Jansen is older and has had a lot of injury problems. His health situation probably isn't going to get much better if any at all. We should start drafting O-Lineman this year so they can get some tutelage from Buges and the veteran lineman.

I really wouldn't slot a 'broken dislocation' into the injury prone category. That's a victim of cicrumstances if anything. I'd like EVERY starter to earn their starting position EVERY year, but unfortunately, there's neither the roster nor cap space to do it. Jansen's the man until it's proven otherwise (which should be tested every year!).
