Ahh this one is very interesting top Redskin back of all time in my opinion right now is definately the diesel John Riggins he does have the most yards and A ring to go along side his many accolades. The Bufoon Spurrier traded away Davis before we could see what he could do.And dont forget in 87 we had two backs who both went for 1000 yards each.Clinton Portis its still too early to tell but i beleive he is the fastest back weve ever had and his potential is through the roof. Well just have to see but as of right now Riggo takes my vote As top Back for Redskins Remember that run against the dolphins in the Superbowl when he ran over the defense to a Touchdown OOOOHWEEEEE SWEET.

is that true? we really had two backs in '87 that rushed for 1000 yds each? i never thought that happened in the history of the NFL.

anyhoo...i had to pick stephen davis. though i know quite a bit about the aforementioned backs, i didn't watch enough games where i could witness them blocking, running, receiving, etc. i'm very excited about portis. but, it's too early to tell.

The 87 Redskins did not have 2 1000 yard rushers they didn't even have 1. George Rodjers led the team with 600+.
To ansewer jDub's question the Dolphins had Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris both go over 1000 yards in the same yearm, in 1972. Morris finished with exactly 1000 yards. The Steelers had Franco Harris and Rockey Blier do the same in 1976.

Larry Brown and John Riggins are the 2 best backs the Skin's have ever had. That is not to say Portis won't become the best he just hasn't been around long enough yet. I do think Portis has the most talent though.

I just think it's great that we have a guy that most of us consider to be one of our best ever... that can't be a bad thing.

Only in the minds of those who never had the good fortune to see Larry Brown play. Portis may be a remarkable talent. So was Michael Westbrook. So was Sean Gilbert. So was Heath Shuler.

Don't get me wrong... I am NOT comparing Portis to those incredible diaappointments... but he's barely started. Y'all may be absolutely right. I hope you are. I think you will be. But, in my mind, talent can't be measured until there's a stong history. Portis has ripped off one big run this year. Outside of that, he'd been pretty much average until the last game. One game does not a history make.

This is an easy one for people that either have watched A LOT of Skins games for a long while, or those who have studied it from the past:

Bobby Mitchell without a shadow of a doubt.

If it comes down to personal appreciation, and Bobby Mitchell not being there though, I will vote for Earnest Byner.

I just feel that he came to us as a broken spirit and Joe was able to help him help himself from there. It is one of the most beautiful stories in the history of our team.

I love to have Byner as our RB coach. I am sure that he is one of those who jumped at the opportunity to work with Joe again.

Bobby Mitchell was blessed with exceptional speed, uncanny faking ability and balance. They were assets that served the versatile wide receiver/halfback well during his 11-year National Football League career that began in 1958 as a seventh-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns.
The fact that Mitchell lasted until the seventh round was somewhat of a mystery, but certainly a stroke of luck for the Browns. Mitchell, who had hoped to play flanker in the pros, was teamed with the incomparable Jim Brown to give the Browns one of history's truly great running back combinations from 1958 through 1961.
He also was a breakaway threat as a punt- and kickoff-return specialist. After four productive seasons with the Browns, Bobby was traded to the Washington Redskins where he played with distinction for seven more seasons.
With his trade to Washington, Bobby became the first African American to sign and star for the Redskins. In Washington, the 6-0, 192-pound Mitchell was for the most part a full-time flanker who gained the reputation as one of the finest catch-run yardage makers in the game.
It is little wonder NFL defenders shuddered whenever Bobby got the ball. He was a potential time bomb who almost always went off. When Mitchell retired, his 14,078 combined net yards was the second highest total in NFL history. He had also scored an amazing 91 touchdowns. Eighteen of his touchdowns came by rushing, 65 on receptions, 3 on punt returns, and 5 on kickoff returns. He amassed 7,954 yards on receptions and 2,735 yards on rushes.
He won the NFL receiving title in 1962 with 72 catches. During his first six seasons with the Redskins he never caught fewer than 58 passes. Four times, once as a running back and three times as a wide receiver, he was selected to play in the Pro Bowl.

Larry Brown. No one hit a hole quicker than Brown. He led the league in rushing a couple of times, and never did he have a serious offensive line. It was all talent: seeing a spot, acceleration, hitting. Furthermore, Brown was a great receiver: he could run long or take a short pass 90 yards (see Jets game, 1972). Furthermore, he was a blocking back in college. He cut people in half when he blocked.

Brown, not OJ Simpson, was the best runner of his era.

Riggins? Close second. It's hard to choose anyone over Riggins, who was fast and strong and ornery. My favorite plays were the end sweeps when Riggins would look for the CB and make no fake...just shoulder down and flatten him.

But if Brown had run behind the Hogs...ah...just to imagine it!

Hardly fair. I saw Bobby Mitchell... plenty. The question is who was the most talented SKINS rb ever. Bobby Mitchell was the second most talented BROWNS rb ever. He barely touched the ball in the skins backfield (but he sure made for a MEAN end around or double reverse). It was his wish to play flanker. He got his wish... and he was pretty damned talented there, too.

Having starting to watch the Redskins in '92 (only in grade 2 then), I don't remember to many of the older 'Skins. One of the more recent backs that I loved to watch was Terry Allen.
