Portis should be very close to his last three seasons average per rush total. In his last year at Miami and first two pro years he averaged 5.5 EACH year. If he averages only 20 touches a game and puts up his 5.5 we are looking at up the 1760 yards this season. Up the anti to 25 touches and the same average we are looking at 2200 yards. 30 carries would equal 2640. Now lets be realistic and say Gibbs rushes him 28 times per game and Defenses focus more on stopping him and he only averages 5.1 yards per carry the numbers for the 16 games would come out to 2284.8 yards. Barring injuries or other set backs it is safe to say that he will put up anywhere’s between 1750 - 2000+ yards next year. I say this guy could easily break the record considering that we have 2 proven qb’s and a very good receiving corps. He will have a lot of 4th quarter carries and that leads to extra yards as long as we aren’t playing “catch up“. If he is healthy, he will at least flirt with breaking the record in the next couple of years. If history repeats itself with his averages and Gibbs’ style offense, it isn’t unrealistic for this guy to break the record this year or next. The Offensive Line, the scores going into the 4th quarter, and his health will determine what happens. Which all goes hand in hand with his performance and I don’t see this guy becoming a bust.

Here’s my bold prediction: Portis is MVP. Regardless of whether he breaks the record or not this guy is going to be mentioned over and over in the MVP race. I think he could edge out the likes of a Favre, Manning, Holmes, McNair, etc. with his numbers, team record, and his overall importance to the team. Remember, he not only makes our Offense that much better, but he is the “best” defensive acquisition as well, just because he keeps the possession arrow pointed in our favor and lets our D rest.
