I went to the Draft Day party at FEDEX in April and watched Fred Smoot and Rock Cartwright tirelessly sign autograph after autograph. And I saw some fans go to outrageous lengths to get their autographs. After a while some of the fans were just down right disgusting to me. Fred and Rock displayed remarkable patience in dealing with these fans. Frankly I do not believe I could have tolerated this. Granted it's part of the job, I do believe that over a period of time (maybe 20 years) a person could become hardened to the point of having no tolerance for autograph seekers.
In DG's case I believe he has a no autograph rule. Having heard his testimony from church, I believe this may have been a regrettable oversight for him and I wish he could have a second opportunity to address you and your son. To whom much is given, much is required and Darrell is in a position that we hold him to a higher standard. His history of serving this community, (certainly visits to hospitals) and the like speaks for itself. I hope somehow someone on the board can get in touch with Darrell to make this right.

I know that DG is a Chistian, as am I. I just find it difficult to think of DG doing something like this in light of his beliefs. I never had any problems with his no Autographs rule because I consider that in keeping with Christianity, but not even stopping to say "Hello" to a sick child is certainly NOT what Jesus would do. Its hard to know all the circumstances surrounding DG and the charity event that day. Perhaps there was some unforseen reason behind this. Still, If this is true, then I don't think that DG gets a pass for this just because he played so well for twenty years.
No one is perfect. I still think that Darrell demonstrated his values in many ways over his twenty years. We all have failings and shortcomings. God has forgiven DG and I will too....mostly because carrying around those years long resentments just sucks! It seems completely out of character for DG...Its so lacking in compassion...but then I think about some of the stuff that I have done. In light of the crap in my past this doesn't seem that horrible.

Posse, that was harsh and uncalled for. Everyone has the right to their own opinion on this board. And he didn't say anything bashing his character. For lots of us, you not included, this isn't anything new. For the rest, they will stick firmly to their belief that Darrell is perfect, based on his accomplishments on the field.
Darrell Green has an ego which revolves 360 degrees around Darrell. He is an amazing person off the field when it comes to religion, his charity, and most importantly himself. When it comes down to anything involving football, the fans are dead last in his eyes. He used to show care for the fans but MANY years ago, that went away. Trust me, I've had personal experience involving it.

Reading this thread does make me sad.
DG, did(does) mess up, and so does everyone contributing to this thread.
I hope we show this same compassion the next time we walk by a homeless person on our way into work, or as we roll up the window to the panhandler on the street. We do like Darrell, perhaps on a more frequent basis -- without all the attention.
Another valuable lesson from the Good Book: "Let he who has no sin cast the first stone."

He doesn't segregate. Sick or not sick, he ignores everyone. I agree that he is ignorant for not showing concern for fans of any kind. I hope all goes well with you, my man. Just keep thinking about all of the players that showed class and treated you with respect. Memories like that will last forever.

Wow, all I can say is that Im truely shocked...
Uggh...D. Green on the field is my fav. Skin of all time, and I guess thats because we're the same as for as body build and we was simply incredible.
Off the field Im a little dissapointed by all of this. I don't know personally because I've never seen him. I want to think of an excuse for him, but I can think of none.

Okay, kids. Out of the pool. Fat guy, comin' through.
First off all, let's try to differentiate between (A.) Darrell Green, 20 year veteran of our Redskins, (B.) Darrell Green, Christian Fellow and organizer of charity and (C.) Darrell Green, person.
I don't know about you guys, but I used to be a volunteer Fireman. (I am now Exempt, having served 11 years, when I only needed five for that status.) I was different at the Firehouse than I was at my job. More relaxed. It's a different group of guys, and I adjusted to them. At work, I'm a Supervisor. Again, different group of guys, and a different role. At home, I'm a Dad and husband. Different group of people, much more important to me than either (A) or (B). As a Coach or Scoutmaster, again. A different look from me. More patient than with a group of adults. That's my (D.) personality.
It is entirely possible for those of us who've never met Darrell Green to love and respect what he did for us on the field and what he said to the reporters. That's his (A.) His job. It is also entirely possible for those of us who've met and dealt with Darrell through his religion-based charities to love and respect the face the man wears for those occasions. That's his (B.) At home ? Who knows, besides his family ? It's his (C.) personality.
However, when you go through a crowd of chldren with obvious disabilities without so much as a by-your-leave, it's your basic personality that is at issue here. The personality that all the others are spin-offs of.
Darrell Green was a superb football player. There is no question that he will be a first-ballot HOF'er. He is a superb spokesman and pitchman, and his highly successful charity will speak to that. As a person, though, when he went through that crowd of ill kids without stopping all those times, we begin to see that Darrell Green has no social skills with those who are not his target audience.
C'mon, now. Would you, in his shoes, not stop for that group ? Even if you had someplace to be ?
Who couldn't be excused for tardiness because they'd stopped to talk to a group of ill children ? If not such a celebrity such as Darrell Green, then who ?
If I remember correctly, Marty Schottenheimer had a problem with Darrell Green in the first interview. It seems that Darrell came in, talked all about himself and his charity, but never once mentioned the team he was playing for. For Marty, an old-time player and coach, this stuck out as a person resting on laurels and personal accomplishments and not a starting DB for Marty's team.
Eventually, they worked it out, and Darrell had a semi-productive season. It was meant to be his last, but 9/11 happened, and Darrell didn't get the money he thought he could have for his charity. (All the donations were geared towards the Pentagon and the WTC.) Instead, he retracted his retirement and hung around for another year as a second stringer (ostensibly, as a player/coach/mentor) , while the collection pail made its rounds in the crowd. I can only assume that either Darrell made enough money to be on the safe side with his charity for a couple of years, or that he just had nothing left to play with or for. I recall there were no interceptions for him that year, breaking his streak of straight years with at least one.
In my opinion, when you stick around only to cash in on your celebrity, you're a person with issues.
There's my two cents. Combine it with Gambit's, and you still can't buy yourself a piece of Bazooka.

Well I have a story about meeting Darrell Green. He went out of his way to talk to me and exchange pleasantries and a quick convo about football. This was while he was late for another engagement.
Maybe he was nice to me because I wasn't a greedy fan asking for another autograph to sell. I mean seriously, imagine what it would be like to have fans crowd you wherever you go and ask for your signature, just so most of them can turn around and sell it.
You met DG and had a bad experience. I met DG and had a great one. Why is yours all of a sudden gospel and mine doesn't count?
I'll take my experience for $300, Alex....

So the sick kids were looking to make a quick buck on e-bay eh?
Same with all of the kids standing in front of the stage at the Ken harvey event... I know when I was looking at the 5-year old boy sobbing to his dad that his feet hurt, he'd been waiting all day, and now he wasn't going to even get an autograph... i was thinking to myself... so what... that little kiddiegartner was just looking to earn a C-note on e-bay.
Gimme a break.
Did you even read the thread?
Glad you had a good experience, many-to-most don't these days... whether you believe it or not.
The proof is in the posts.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
In most cases I will agree with the statement "let he who has not sinned cast the first stone" but in this case it just does not apply. The guy has had a great life which was brought to him by the fans that he ignores any chance he can. This is not the act of an appreciative man (for the gift that god gave him) or even a decent person. It's another selfish act. You can bet that if the cameras were on...you would have seen a very different Mr. Green.
...or maybe just another hard-nosed business man who realizes that his only product is his autograph. The fact that he walks past sick kids can't be ignored, though.
That's plain wrong, and a man of "God" should set a better example, bad day or not.
