Unless someone puts Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgenson, Joe T, Doug Williams, and Doug Rypien into a time machine, Cousins seems the best available.

Doug the Ryper? Check his stats in 1991: stated 16 games, completed 249 or 421 passes, 59.1 completion %, 3564 yards, 28 TDs, 11 INTs, 14.3 yards per catch, 222.8 yards per game, 97.9 passer rating A balanced team: Ervins / Byner Riggs scored 19 TDs, fumbling a total of 5 times.

Passers had no rule protection in 1991.

So, unless we spot another Doug Rypien, Cousins is about the best the Redskins will see for a long time. Of course, the Hogs were being replaced by The Piglets and it would help to have a Hogs II, plus Monk, Sanders, Gary Clark, Ron Warren, and a big H-back. Also might help to have the number 2 defence in the NFL alsongise the number 1 offense.

Didn't need it...Rip was only sacked 7 times!!

I brought this up a while ago also. That team was one of the best all time.

And it's Mark Rypien, not Doug. One of my all time favorites. Back in the mid 2000s I saw him (and his wife) at about 3am walking down 18th street and proceeded to serenade him with HTTR. He took it well. In reality you could see he was uncomfortable with it and requested that I keep it down a bit, but I continued at full pitch nonetheless.

Ha! Either I was half-asleep, or mixing up Joe Washington, Doug Williams, Joe Theisman, and Mark the Ripper. And The National Defense.

I completely agree, man. In two years, whatever LTD Cousins worked out in 2017 will look cheap.

To your point about overpaying a DL, I was thinking about the Josh Norman deal this morning. Didn't we make that guy like the highest paid player at his position last year? Don't get me wrong, Norman is a great player, happy to have him here and all that. But there's no comparing his impact on the team to the QB.

I don't understand the willingness to do whatever it takes to get Josh Norman, but the hemming and hawing over the most important position on the team.[/quote]

I don't often agree with Sally Jenkins but she summed up my disgust and references the Norman contract and Kirk's observation about it.

Clearly, I am one of very few who is okay letting him walk for high draft picks.

I have a very hard time giving him a lot of our cap space (money isn't important to me, it isn't mine). So much cap space we'll struggle with getting FAs and keeping some of our current guys this year and beyond. I do recognize quality QBs are hard to find...however, I'm not 100% convinced he's better than 10-15 other qbs in the NFL. Therefore, would I want to use up 1/7th of our cap for a QB in the middle of the pack? I'm hearing he could be the highest paid QB in the league. Are we okay overpaying that much?

I watch our games and he is good at dinks and dunks, not so good at deep throws. Teams let us throw the underneath stuff knowing eventually we'll break down in the redzone (which he hasn't excelled at) or he'll do something dumb (like throw a pick in endzone vs Dallas or a pick vs Giants as we try to get into playoffs).

Kirk has had great games for sure...he also has had not so good games. I tell my skins friends during the game -- we see good Kirk make 2 or 3 good plays then we see bad Kirk throw a pick 6 or miss on a long wide open receiver to keep a drive going.

I also see a qb that isn't that accurate. Does anyone have our games taped? Go back and watch how many times our WRs/TEs have to stop or reach back for passes, and not get many YACs?

Lastly, we had possibly the best WRs/TEs in the league...could another qb step in and do a lot of the same stuff with the same weapons - for less money/cap space?

I'm absolutely not a hater on Kirk, he's played well for us at times. I just struggle giving a player who isn't in the top 5-10 at his position a ton of our cap space.

Good post. It is time for us to let Captain Pick go for sweet draft picks. The guy is a choker. Trade him, then it will be time to fire Fat Gruden.

I do NOT agree on Jay Gruden, I believe he's a good coach who is still learning...If you go back to Bill Belicheck's career you'll see where he was building something in Cleveland then they fired him...enough said!

If Snyder is involved with any decisions that affect the product on the field, there's really not much to hope for - we are a 5-8 win franchise at best - If Snyder is not involved with those decisions, and I don't think he is, we have a chance at improving this franchise if we continue along the path we have followed since the end of 2014

I'm OK with what this FO decides to do about Cousins or anyone else here - hence the applause

and if that means that some here may leave this site, as they have indicated ... that's a bonus

I will add that if Snyder is involved with player decisions and he influences the FO to pay Cousins whatever it takes to keep him here, we are really screwed - Dan Snyder has conclusively proved that he does not have a clue about managing an NFL franchise

Because he is desperate for Cousins to go because he unseated his golden boy as the QB.

not really ... I'm not "desperate for Cousins to go" - I hope he stays, because we'd be better off with him and I'm sure this FO is not giving him a stupid long term deal like some here want

I'm not as infatuated with Kirk Cousins as some here are ... he's a good QB but ....

not having Cousins as our QB might mean a few here will leave this site ... that's a good thing =D>

Jay Gruden is a young Belicheck? The guy cannot even call a TO properly after 4 years as a HC. Have you seen the dumb look on his face? After shipping out the most overrated QB in the NFL lets ship out the dumbest coach in the NFL.

Gruden is far from dumb. He built a prolific offense and groomed a now top 15 QB.

I did NOT say Gruden was Belicheck...I said, look back on Bill's career and he was building something in Cleveland then got fired!! When he was with Browns, I'm sure some Browns fan thought he had a dumb look on his face and was worthless too...wonder if that fan was wrong??

IMO, it's too early to assess Jay... Let's give Jay a D that has some playmakers. No Skins fans can say we've had a good enough D...heck, we spent all our money on offense, specifically WRs. We had maybe one starter quality DL and NO starter quality ILBs and a revolving door at safety. OLBs and Corners were fine.

He's done it with two consecutive teams!

People want to have it both ways. "Cousins' success is just the by product of Gruden's system" and "Gruden is a terrible coach" can't both be true.

Jay Gruden is not bad but not great - he's had Andy Dalton and the Bengals and now Kirk Cousins and the Redskins

not great success but not bad at all

I kind of rolled my eyes when someone posted this thread a few weeks ago. Last night though, I saw some BS twitter rumors about a Cousins/49ers trade that I thought were real for a moment. It made me realize I might actually agree with this thread title.

Not that I think Cousins is the second coming of Tom Brady. But going into the 2017 season with no Cousins. No DJax. No Garcon. I mean, our offense last year was the only thing going. I would hope the defense will be improved, but I don't have expectations that we're going to jump up to be a top 10 group in one offseason.

How many of you would be feeling optimistic or excited about going into the season with something like McCoy, Crowder, Docston and Marquise Goodwin?

That just looks like a 5-11 season waiting to happen.

I agree with this and share a similar sentiment. My initial thoughts were, "well, if we lose Cousins, we'll still have a competent GM"....... Based on the current rumors, we are going to lose the ONLY 2 good things this franchise currently has available to them.

I have had it with Snyder and 20 years is long enough to know he'll never learn (if all the rumors are true).

I don't think Cousins is the second coming either, but if we don't retain him it shows that Danny boy & Co. don't know how to keep a good thing around. It has also become apparent that quality players/FO talent want nothing to do with this franchise. I still believe that if Cousins thought this franchise was run correctly, he'd already be signed to a LTD ---- and with a home discount.

Dan Snyder has made it nearly impossible for fans to "buy in" to the franchise. He is a curse and the worst owner in all of professional sports.

I'll always love my skins, but if all this happens, I won't be wasting my time on Sundays or shelling out $250 for the Sunday ticket --- that I can assure you. I don't punish myself for fun. I'll basically go dormant until things change --- and with Snyder, that could very well never happen.

I hate to admit I've been hoping this is really about personal issues with McCloughan. The alternative - that Snyder/Allen are being complete idiots - is just a dagger.
