Manusky will be fine - hopefully we find some young free agent defensive players
we will not be looking defense with the #17 pick (or, with any draft pick) - this FO should continue adding best player available
we need a lot of help on the defensive side of the ball but the best long term philosophy is to take the best player available in the draft and not the old fashioned way of focusing on short term needs
you cannot have enough good players and you get there through the draft

riggofan wrote:Not pointing at anyone here, but all of the hand wringing by fans over these coordinator hires/promotions is kind of embarrassing. We need more talent on defense. If McCloughan does his job in the off season and upgrades the talent, I'm pretty confident the new defensive staff can improve on what we saw this past year. Would we all agree that the bar hasn't exactly been set very high?
For all of the disappointment over Manusky, he's an experienced guy who seems to be well regarded by the players and the front office too. Since Manusky and Tomsula were both with the 49ers while McCloughan was there, I doubt they'd be here if Scot didn't approve of the moves as well.
btw It was hard yesterday to watch the Falcons put on an absolute clinic on offense. I doubt you would have to look very hard for old posts on this board complaining that Kyle Shanahan sucked and blaming Mike for hiring his unworthy son. Amazing to see what a coach can do when he has something legit to work with.
Kyle was amazing without a lot of talent to work with

I don't think it's unreasonable to target the best DEFENSIVE player available. The best player on defense, no matter the position, will help the team far more than any offensive upgrade.
On Manusky... eh. He was a mediocre DC, so if he raises our defense from the pile of dog turds it is now to middle of the pack, it'll be a huge improvement. Maybe he'll be good enough.

all NFL coaches are talented - their level of success is dependent on the talent they have to work with
Kyle is good but he's not going to become a great HC unless he gets some great talent with his coaches and his players
I hope he becomes HC of the 49ers & we can get that #2 pick - their top pick in 2018 is going to be top 5, possibly even top 3
Greg Manusky will be fine but like most NFL coaches, he needs talented players ... lots of them

Hmm, 2nd and 11 at the NE 23, ATL 28 NE 20 with 3:56 left on the clock: Run the ball, eat the clock, kick the game winning FG? No! Kyle get's cute and calls a pass. Ryan gets sacked. OK, Kyle, now it's 3rd and 23 at the NE 35, 3:50 left on the clock: Run the ball, eat the clock, kick the game winning FG? No! Kyle doubles down and calls another pass. 10 yard penalty for holding. Out of FG range. The rest is history. Kyle outcoached himself last night. smh

how about that - 28-3 and the NFL's BEST OFFENSE coached by the NFL's BEST OC could not score another point over the next 28 minutes
please let him be absolutely in love with a certain Redskin QB - PLEASE
hopefully the FO is going to give Greg all the players he needs to have a good defense - offense wins games but defense win championships

Yeah, Kyle's playcalling there was suspect. No question. However, in retrospect, everything is easy. Prior to that sack, the ATL run game had basically gone dead. The past 2 rushing plays totaled 2 yards. Kyle took a chance (as he is known to do) and got burned ---- badly. It is easy to say they should have run the ball on second and third. Then again, their passing game was working at the time. Regardless, that sack and the subsequent holding play lost them the game. Matt Bryant was a perfect 9-9 from 40-49 yards this year......
Ryan put them in a position to win that game. This loss was not on him in any respect.

Well, for what it's worth, we were screaming at the TV, "Why the hell are you in shotgun for? Run the damn ball!" I mean, even if you just take a knee to center the ball between the hashes, it would have at least forced NE to burn their TOs, while not giving up the yardage.

Yeah --- I recall thinking to myself on the sack play "WTF are they in shotgun; maybe one of the two RBs will cut inside and run up the middle...... Kyle, you're not fooling anyone, just run it up the gut".... then right at snap one went out for a pass and the other held protection. So no I hear you. I too thought about the fact all they had to do was kneel at that point. If it were me, I would have ran it no question ---- no matter how badly we had been rushing up to that point.
That play didn't lose the game per se, it was more the combination of that play and the penalty, but it was a clapse and choke nonetheless --- and one at the hands of the coaching staff and OL, not Ryan. Ryan put them in the position to win that game, his support failed him.

players or coaches don't win or lose games - it's a team game
our defense wasn't bad just because of Joe Barry
Greg Manusky will be a better DC because he will be given a better group of defensive players to work with

Huh? Didn't we put up 42 points on these same Packers in week 11? What I remember more about Kyle, was that he sometimes tried to get too cute with the trick plays, and abandoned the run too early. Sound familiar?
Yeah you're right. He sucks.

OTOH... watched a certain OC get cute, and abandon the run near sure FG territory, with an 8 point lead, and in the last 3 minutes of the game... apparently, brain farts have consequences... who knew??? I'd be a little hesitant to declare him a genius... this is exactly the same kind of idiocy that he demonstrated repeatedly with the Redskins... dude beats himself. You can't be great when you don't learn from mistakes.

After going up 28-3 with 8:31 left in the 3rd quarter, Atlanta ran the ball 4 more times the rest of the way.
On the drive immediately after falling behind 28-3, New England ran the ball 6 times and burned 6:25 off the clock.
Immediately before the sack/fumble by Ryan on 3rd and 1 the Falcons had just run twice for 9 yards.
The staff and Ryan gagged. New England remained calm.

agreed - Kyle Shanahan and the #1 offense in the NFL with the NFL's MVP could not find a way to score in the final 23:30 - are you freaking kidding me - what the hell happened? the stats PROVE beyond a shadow of doubt that that could not happen - are the stats wrong - OMG - what are we going to do? our whole system its ruined if we cannot depend on what the stats PROVE
Put Kyle Shanahan in charge of the 49ers with Cousins playing QB - they'll be favored to be in the Super Bowl against the Pats
