just read that Cleveland were looking to make Gus Bradley or Gregg Williams the DC - Bradley is apparently 'hoping' to get the DC job at Redskins and Williams has the weekend to decide

our defense will NOT improve by just adding a new DC - better players and the new DC might improve the defenseHooligan wrote:I don't think we're that short on talent. We do need players, but a real DC like Wade Phillips would make a huge difference, even with the players we have now.SkinsJock wrote:our defense will NOT improve by just adding a new DC - better players and the new DC might improve the defenseHooligan wrote:I don't think we're that short on talent. MAYBE - we'll never know for sure ......Deadskins wrote:We do need players, but a real DC like Wade Phillips would make a huge difference, even with the players we have now.
Your last post said a change in DC wouldn't make a difference, but now you, and the article you cite, are saying "not just" a change in DC. In other words, a change in DC would make a difference by itself, but there are other pieces necessary to make it a top unit. Not sure why you are winking and acting like you were correct all along.SkinsJock wrote:apparently others also feel that we need more than just a new DC ...![]()

"Based on multiple conversations throughout the season, the Redskins know the talent level on defense must improve. They know there’s more work to do aside from just changing coordinators. They just have to now get it done."
as Jay Gruden indicated, no matter who the new DC is, it's going to take a little while (2 seasons minimum) to make this defense into a top defensive unit because we need a number of good players + you can't expect a huge turnaround in 1 season by just changing DCsSkinsJock wrote:I'm not sure that anyone would have done much better - If Jay is OK with Joe Barry, let's just add some players
You can if he's good enough. I'm more in the same boat as Hooligan. We have some talent on D, but we need help at a few key positions, and a DC that knows how to put the players in the position to make plays.SkinsJock wrote:as I posted earlier ...as Jay Gruden indicated, no matter who the new DC is, it's going to take a little while (2 seasons minimum) to make this defense into a top defensive unit because we need a number of good players + you can't expect a huge turnaround in 1 season by just changing DCsSkinsJock wrote:I'm not sure that anyone would have done much better - If Jay is OK with Joe Barry, let's just add some players
you really aught to contact the FO and see if they'd let you have a chat with Jay Grudenfredp45 wrote:A change in DC and 3 quality defensive players and we're a lot better. Giants did it. Signed 3 good FAs and drafted Eli Apple in first ... good d now. I want a DC that changes back to 4-3.
Williams to join Browns as defensive coordinator
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports the Browns will hire Gregg Williams as their defensive coordinator.
Ray Horton is out as DC after only one season. Williams was unlikely to keep his job in Los Angeles under the team's new head coach (whoever it may be) and will now move cross-country to coach one of the league's worst defensive units. It will be interesting to see how the Browns configure their defense next season. They used a 3-4 scheme under Horton but Williams has traditionally coached 4-3 defenses.
They might want that, but I doubt that either would demand it as a condition oF signing a contract. Even if they did, I don't think the Redskins would ever agree to that. For the new DC, there is too much competition for jobs to ever make such a demand, especially considering they might be the new HC candidate if Gruden got canned. For Kirk, they could just franchise him again and he would have no say. The Redskins may well extend Gruden, but it won't be to appease and incoming DC, or the current QB.chiefhog44 wrote:I would imagine that a new DC would want a head coach that has a contract lasting more than this year. I think a QB signing a long term deal would want the same. Both lead me to believe Gruden will be extended soon.
This is the reason I think the Skins would look at Manusky.chiefhog44 wrote:I would imagine that a new DC would want a head coach that has a contract lasting more than this year. I think a QB signing a long term deal would want the same. Both lead me to believe Gruden will be extended soon.

How so? They were already lined up mostly with 2 Dts and 2 DEs. They rarely lined up in a 3-4.SkinsJock wrote:you really aught to contact the FO and see if they'd let you have a chat with Jay Grudenfredp45 wrote:A change in DC and 3 quality defensive players and we're a lot better. from what I'm hearing, anyone would be an upgrade at DCand going to the 4-3 is a sure-fire way to improve the D
Redskins interview Mike Pettine for DC job
The Redskins interviewed Mike Pettine for their defensive coordinator job.
Fired by the Browns one year ago, Pettine spent all of 2016 out of football and is now looking to get back in. 50-year-old Pettine is a Rex Ryan disciple who coordinated the Bills' defense in 2013 and the Jets' defense in 2009-2012. Although we haven't heard Pettine's name much in a while, he would be an exciting hire for a Redskins defense that underachieved in 2016.
