We disagree about the early context of the term and about whether this poll is meaningful. But we seem to agree that it's a dying non-issue.

That said the PC crowd will raise this again because victimhood is their life's blood they must have victims to advocate for it doesn't matter to them how the real living human beings care about it.
The poll didn't ask if they supported the name. It asked if the name bothered them. There's a big difference.
Indeed. Huge difference. That's one of the reasons I posted ...I'm gonna use the word Indian for the people we're talking about here.
I wonder what the EXACT question in the poll was.
As an Indian (Blackfoot), if someone asked me "Does it offend you that the NFL team in Washington calls itself the Redskins? - yes or no." I would say "No."
If they asked me to elaborate I'd say "After all that has happened to us since the Europeans arrived, do you really think I give a rat's ass as to what an NFL team calls itself?"
Meanwhile, if I'm walking down the street in some southwestern town and some non-Indian says "Hey, redskin." in an attempt to get my attention, I'd ignore him and under my breath probably say something like "ass hole." I'd find his use of the word in that situation very offensive.
I have found that almost every Indian I've ever talked to feels this way.
I think this is the context in which one should view these poll results. So I, DarthMonk, Blackfoot, am not offended by the name only because I'm being existential about it.
I love our logo,
hate the Cleveland Indian logo,
and would rather be named the Washington Braves.

It was until the Post decided to stir the pot.

Well...
Let me say this much. I use the word nigger sometimes and it's definitely not positive. 99% of the time I say.. "This is why I hate niggers". I say this when I see/read things about my people who do negative dumb . Example.. Group of 'black' guys who beat the living crap out of someone for no reason at all (and other dumb crap that's negative). I tell my wife in that situation.."See babe, this is why I hate niggers". Keep in mind I am 'black' and so is my wife. She understands what I mean and every 'black' friend I have also does.
Those same black friends when I see them I say.."wussup my niga?" Of course to us that's like saying what's up my brother. Should I stop saying niga, yea I probably should but I'm not at that point in my life yet.
Now for the term/name Redskins.. Until this issue actually became an issue, I have ALWAYS known Redskins as Washington's football team. I can't speak for the natives of this country but given the fact we have a state whose name means Red Skin, I find it quite hypocritical for any government agencies to even have an opinion on the matter. Until Oklahoma's name is changed, they can all eat a you know what.

That's really the truth of the issue with racial slurs.
If you're not the race to which the slur refers the word doesn't bother you.
Sure, there are people who pretend to be offended on behalf of others but in reality that's all it is: pretense.
100% of people who are not Black are not offended by the word nigger because that word is a racial slur disparaging to Blacks.
100% of people who are not Asian are not offended by the word chink because that word is a racial slur disparaging to Chinese.
100% of people who are not Native American are not offended by the word redskin because that word is a racial slur disparaging to Native Americans.
Because all of those races / ethnicities are minorities the voices of those who are not offended far outweigh the voices of those who are.
If every single Native American was offended by the word redskin that would still only be 2% of the population.
I look at it from the perspective of how we treat other words considered racial slurs by more than a handful of people.
What other word that was considered a racial slur by more than 2% of the population could we use as the name of a sports team without backlash?
If a team had been named the Sambos back when the term was in common usage would we be able to claim history and tradition or argue original intent in defense of the name?
I'm really not convinced Redskins is any different.
Having said that, it's the name of the team and unless or until it isn't the name of the team it's Hail To The Redskins.
No Native Americans were called redskins in this process.
