Cravens wore No. 21 at USC, and even though he’s listed as a safety, he will likely end up playing more linebacker.

No. He would have to change numbers per league rules to line up primarily at linebacker.

Deone Bucannon for the Cards didn't. He was listed as a safety, lined up primarily at LB, and wore number 20 all season.

Maybe they broke the rules. Maybe they used an exception. Maybe there is a gray area between safety in the box and linebacker.

PLAYERS NUMBERED BY POSITION
Article 2All players must wear numerals on their jerseys in accordance with Rule 5, Section 4, Article 3(c).
Such numerals must be by playing position, as follows:
(a) quarterbacks, punters, and placekickers: 1-19;
(b) running backs and defensive backs: 20-49;
(d) offensive guards and tackles: 60-79;
(e) wide receivers: 10-19 and 80-89;
(f) tight ends: 80-89;
If a player changes his position during his playing career in the NFL, and such change moves him from a
position as an ineligible pass receiver to that of an eligible pass receiver, or from a position as an eligible
pass receiver to that of an ineligible pass receiver, he must be issued an appropriate new jersey numeral.
A change in jersey numeral is not required if the change is from an ineligible position to another ineligible
position, or from an eligible position to another eligible position, provided that the player has participated at
least one season at his position prior to the change.
Any request to wear a numeral for a special position not specified above (e.g., H-back) must be made to the
Commissioner.
During the preseason period when playing rosters are larger, the League will allow duplication and other
temporary deviations from the numbering scheme specified above, but the rule must be adhered to for all
players during the regular season and postseason. Clubs must make numerals available to adhere to the
rule, even if it requires returning to circulation a numeral that has been retired or withheld for other reasons.
See 5-3-1 for reporting a change of position.

This is the specific clause to which I am referring:

A change in jersey numeral is not required if the change is from an ineligible position to another ineligible
position, or from an eligible position to another eligible position, provided that the player has participated at
least one season at his position prior to the change.

I'm pretty sure Bucannon played at safety the previous season but I could be wrong about that. Haven't actually looked it up.

Prediction:

By the time the bye rolls around, Cravens will be an every-down player.

In base (minority of snaps) he will be a big safety often in the box with linebacker-esque size and tackling skills as well as an ability to deal with a TE.

In nickel and/or dime (majority of snaps) he will stay on the field and replace a LB as a big DB.

This kid showed up and played well in game 1 of pre-season.

Good motor and energy. Just plays smart and instinctive. Be careful NOT to "freelance" too much (as Jay alluded to).

Su'a Cravens ladies and gentlemen... a couple of injuries may have got his number called more this week.... but every snap I look for the late great Sean Taylor's rookie number 36... and almost on cue when I spot Mr Craven's and his homage paying number..... I also see him making plays.

In the backfield.
Form tackling in open space.
In a qbs face!
Coming across the field for an assist.
OR breaking up a pass, making the opposition pist!!

This week was no mirage... your boy is TIGHT in coverage!
A pass defended, almost picked... o wait next time...

He comes down wit it!!
When it matters most, that's GAME... w a high working motor-

Su'a Cravens can PLAY!!!

Su'a Cravens - DB - Redskins

Redskins second-round sophomore Su'a Cravens will switch to safety for 2017.

Cravens played a hybrid role as a rookie, but he will be a full-time safety as a sophomore. Cravens said he "can't wait" to make the switch and will work with Landon Collins and former Steelers and Redskins safety Ryan Clark this offseason. Even with Cravens likely moving into a starting role, the Redskins need to find a true free safety to pair with him.
