I agree with this, as long as it's not mine. They're not getting anywhere near mine.

Redskins
is a racist pejorative. It is defined as such. That's not up for debate here.
That's where you are wrong. Do you know when it was first listed as a pejorative by dictionaries? Words change meaning all the time. It's time for this one to be updated again, Do you know the history of the word itself? Why is it racist to refer to an American Indian as redskin, but not a person of European descent, white, or African descent, black? You said previously that no tribes support the name, but that's not true. There is great support for the team by local tribes. When we played Arizona last year, there were counter-protests by Indians supporting the name. There are schools on reservations that use the name and logo. A logo, that btw, was designed by, and put on the helmets at the behest of, American Indians. The state of Oklahoma needs to change it's name too. It means "Red People" in Choctaw. I'd say it is very much up for debate.
He's not wrong. It's been a racist pejorative in dictionaries for decades. It was pejorative when the team adopted the name. It may be time for this one to be updated as you say. The fact that redskin is a translation of what a certain tribe called itself hundreds of years ago really is not relevant. I'm sure they were not the only ones referring to their kind by skin color. That has no bearing on whether or not the word redskin ever was or currently is pejorative. The meaning of Oklahoma is also irrelevant. One is a pejorative, the other is not. Why is another question.
This is fun. Each clip has a speaker icon you can un-mute if you hover the mouse over the bottom right hand corner.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc- ... mark-case/The only way I ever heard the word "redskin" used growing up (other than referring to the team) was in much the same way as I heard the word "nigger" used. The only way I ever hear it anymore is when people are referring to the team. It seems no one wants to say it otherwise. Hmm ...
Like B&G, I'm not calling for a name change but would not surprised if/when it happens.

Phil Simms insisted he'd never say it again last season. When he covered the NYG game, he was saying it over and over. Why? Because it's the name of a football team. People that associate the word Redskins to malign American Indians, are doing it because they are prejudiced, usually. I have never in my life (47 years) heard a person refer to Native Americans as Redskins in an attempt to be demeaning. I rarely hear people referring to American Indians as anything other than Native American. "Redskins" is used by a great many Native American High Schools as their mascot (look up Red Mesa High School). People who claim that it's okay for them to use it because they are Native Americans are just perpetuating a double standard. I don't know of many double standards that are beneficial to a culture or society.
If these tribes use Redskins as their mascot name, then that is proof positive that Redskins is NOT always a negative term. Redskins, Warriors, Indians, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Tomahawks, Seminoles, Hawkeyes, etc., are all amalgams for the ferocity, strength, resolve and determination that was found or associated with American Indian tribes. Typically, mascots and nicknames of sports teams reflect that. Tigers, Lions, Wildcats, etc. There are exceptions- Twins, Tar Heels, Blue Hens. Then there are names like Fighting Irish, Celtics, Vikings, and other heritage/nationalities that are okay because they're... white people!
How people have managed to turn a nickname that was to reflect strength into a constant insult is beyond me. Context and intent is all that matters. Politically correct language is a poison.
