Redskins4Life wrote:Alright, i'm gonna come out and say it. This has not been a very good offseason for us. Sure we got an EXCELLENT RB in Clinton Portis, but we also lost the leagues best cornerback in Champ Bailey. We replaced him with pro bowl caliber CB Shawn Springs, but Springs has had major issues with injuries his last few seasons. We lost a great blocking FB in Bryan Johnson, and even though Cartwright is awesome, his blocking skills are nowhere near B.Johnson's level. We signed young, speedy LB Marcus Washington who was a great pickup, but we let go one of the teams most steady and solid players in Jessie Armstead which made me kind of angry. We also lost two very valuable draft picks, our 2nd and 3rd rounders as part of the Portis trade, and for M.Brunell which I personally think was a bad acquisition. Defensive line was a major priority coming into this offseason and yet we really haven't upgraded it much at all. Cornelius Griffin is a GOOD player, not great (at least yet) but he makes one out of the 4 people who are going to be on our DLine. Phillip Daniels is no upgrade over either Upshaw or Wynn, theyre all big slow run stopping DE's; we need pass rushing DE's. We signed P Tom Tupa which might have been one of the smartest acquisitions all offseason, but he's a little old and he's definitely not a permanent solution at Punter. I'm hoping we'll sign an undrafted rookie Punter after the draft. The draft is coming up and we have only THREE selections! Our 1st round pick is probably going to be the only player who will make an impact on the team this season. Hopefully it will be Sean Taylor because he is the Ray Lewis of the Safety position, and the next Ronnie Lott. To top it all off, Jeremiah Trotter is on the trading block and it looks like we're not gonna get anything for him. I'll go crazy if the Skins cut him and not get anything for return; he played just fine last season and was coming off an ACL tear which is a horrible injury, we should give him one more shot. The only way I can see this offseason getting better is if we acquire a pass rushing DE... I don't know how but if we do, we will instantly become contenders. What do you guys think?
looks like more than one thing

We lost with Champ, we can lose without him.
Joe Bugel is a huge upgrade to a talented OL.
Portis completely solidifies the RB position, with Rock deployable in short yardage situations.
Let Tight End be the only position we have a major hole in. Seriously, is there a better position to be deficient in? I'm mean I love the old guys, Warren, Diddier, and Orr but I think you address other areas first and coach'up the tight ends you have. Plus isn't Mike Sellers a perferct H'back?
Bryan Johnson has potential but never won us any games.
The D-line scares me. Depth at LB will help b/c maybe we can put Lavar in at DE some. At least we have bodies with Daniels, Griffin, Upshaw, Hausley, Haley, etc. Noble coming back would make me feel a little better. BTW is Daryl Gardner to the Bengals a done deal. I'd take him back in a heartbeat.
Maybe I'm too optimistic but we are a two year project. This year the offense and defensive secondary will get established. Next year with some improvements to the DL we will become highly competitive.

BTP, in response to your post....
Hell yeah we upgraded our RB corps with Portis. Great move, but we gave up Bailey and our 2nd round pick. If it was just Bailey for Portis, it would have been great, the 2nd round pick made me a little unhappy, but still a good move. At QB, we now have depth. But we lost a third round pick for 34 yr. old Mark Brunell. Dallas got Drew Henson who has potential to be a future pro bowler for a 3rd round pick. We got a guy whose good years are behind him. Thrash and Raymer were good acquisitions, I agree with you there. We lost Armstead and Trotter but got M.Washington. Well guess what, we have no good MLB anymore. Kevin Mitchell is a little bit above average at best. And yes, our DLine has been upgraded, but guess what? IT STILL SUCKS! Springs will be a good replacement for Bailey as long as he stays healthy, we cannot make a fair assessment of Springs until the season is over. We did nothing to upgrade our mediocre safeties, but hopefully we will draft Sean Taylor and not worry about our FS position for the next 12 years. Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams are GREAT pickups but when I was referring to a below average offseason, I kinda meant the players not the personnel. Overall, our offseason could have been better. Basically if we had more draft picks and picked up a pass rushing DE. Maybe we can get a good player or two after June 1st. We'll have to wait and see.

Redskins had a great offseason this year!!! We aquired a great veteren quarterback in Mark Brunell. One of the leagues most dominant running backs in the game, Clinton Portis. You can not say that our linebacking group is bad with the aquisation of Marcus Washington. Now, who would you rather have Champ Baily or Clinton Portis and Shawn Springs?

So how do you think it could have been better? Because we wouldn't have Portis here if we didn't give up that second... So which RB was gonna comin here and do better with that 2nd Pick? So what Dallas got Henson.... he's not gonna even be ready for a couple years...... Do you want to win now or later? Joe Gibbs isn't gonna be around for ever....
If we didn't use that 3rd pick on Brunell ( The Best QB available, who's still got a couple years left in him), who would we have gotten with that 3rd pick, or who would be our back-up QB? We needed one last year when Ramsey got hurt, what happens if he were to get hurt again? Do you really want to have Tim Hasselback, although he could be a good QB one day.... being our starter for the remainder of the season?
Did you want to leave the LB situation as is was last year? good players but slow? We missed out on Jevon Kearse, Grant Winstrom, Warren Sapp, etc.... poop happens! It's not like we didn't try to go get these guys, they made there decisions that they wanted to go else where.....But we saved money not paying them anyhow, are d-line has beefed up....you'll be surprised....
You say we could have done better, but I can't see where we could have improved much, without losing players that we've pick-up this offseason......

why do people think drew henson is gonna be awesome? IMO i think hes gonna suck because he's a BASEBALL PLAYER so he played a little college ball, but he gave that up for BASEBALL he should go back to the yankees or sumthin. no wait hes on the cowpukes! i guess thats alright, as long hes not wearing burgundy and gold!

BTP...
I agree we most likely could not draft a player of Clinton Portis caliber in the 2nd round, but Clinton Portis was a 2nd round pick himself so we cant' say that for sure. Also, Hasselbeck is horrible, but we could have signed some other FA QB to be our backup. We could have gotten a really good Defensive LIneman with our 3rd round pick instead. Other FA QB's were Trent Dilfer, Jeff Blake, Jeff Garcia, etc. They're not of Brunell's caliber but we don't need an allstar backup, we just need a "capable" one.

Hey Brandon777 I am just telling you the truth about our offseason. I wish we went for some real needs instead of this pick-ups of certain players irregardless of position.
I think you and I are on the same page Redskins4Life that we just don't see the PLAN and don't agree with the pick-ups at particular positions, for certain dollar amounts that we way overpaid and copensation we gave up on some of our trades.
We do disagree on a few fine points.
Are we going to get even 8 games out of Raymer? (I mean over the length of the contract. Not just this year)
I do like Hasselback but I agree about the compensation. We didn't have much in the way of options mid-way through last season. Then again who was the QB at Florida in 1989??? We could have brought him in
8 million signing bonus for Brunell???? I like him but guys let's be real!!! We had options and time on our side.
My fingers are crossed for next year and as I always say the healthy teams usually go the farthest. Please no ACL's!

So you want us to cross our fingers and hope that we picked a good RB with our second pick?
I agree that we payed a little much for Portis when we where giving them Bailey and a 2nd.... but if that's what it took to get him here.... then I'd do it again in a heart beat....

And we could of picked a lousy D-lineman w/ that pick.....Now we know we got a good QB out of it.....

I believe we talked to Seattle about Trent and they said no, besides.... why would Trent want to come from backing up one team to another? Garcia never would have come here to back-up.... he wanted to Start.... thats why he turned down the Bucs offer... and went to Cleveland....they guaranteed him a starting job...And Jeff Blake? uh.... I don't remember him bring the Ravens nor the Cardinals to the playoffs.... Jeff Blake = Tony Banks = No Thank You!
We really had a pretty good offseason if you think about it..... and there still might be more to come

I think you're missing his point, BTP. We didn't address that DL need with that pick(which is a HUGE need for us), but we picked up an overpaid, 2 yr-at-best QB? I'm not bashing Brunell, but that deal was crazy. I mean really. His days with Jacksonville were over and we just had to have him? I like the pickup because of the depth, but I think it's overpriced depth. He may not even start and get a big fat check. Hmmmm....

I see his point.... and though I don't think we have a HUGH hole at DT..... yes it would be nice if we all felt a little more comfortable with that position..... but if we had kept that pick, and drafted a D-Lineman there's no guarantee that he would be starting either.....
Ramsey got hurt last year and we spent the rest of the year with Hasselbeck..... What happens if in week 3 Ramsey were to get hurt again and be out for the season, and we instead never got Brunell.... and Drafted a D-lineman with that 3rd pick? What happens? Tell me?
I'll tell you.... we have another lousy season down the drain... thats what happens... because instead of trading a 3rd for a proven winning QB who still has something left in him..... we drafted a Defensive tackle, so we could get MORE depth... it's easier to find a body to put in a d-line than it is to get a QB worth something other than Jeff Blake

Well. That's cool. It's your opinion. I just disagree. I think we made really good moves. An 8 million dollar signing bonus for a proven QB is not a steep price IMO.
