I think most of us pretty much agree... If Williams is, by some miracle, there, he will be a Redskin. Otherwise, see if someone has a bad jones for one of the next tier players. If Marriota is there, someone WILL overpay. With an extra pick in the first, I'd be happy to include Collins on my list.

OK - I'll say this - If we cannot trade out of 5 and the guy Scot & Jay picks is not starting for this team - Scot will not be here next draft
... if Scot picks a guy at #5 and he doesn't play really well that first year, there is NO WAY Scot would be fired. NO WAY!

It's Scot - SORRY! I have a lot of faith in our new GM and I really believe he cannot 'miss' if we pick at the 5 spot

if for some reason he finds a way to do that, he'll be gone - besides ... it's not happening #-o
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'd be surprised if a player of L. Collins caliber falls past 10 - that guy's going to be a good Safety for a long time

then again - I was a Landry fan ...

I don't know. I haven't seen many mock drafts with him in the top 10 lately. McShay has him going at #20 in his latest. Kiper has him at #22. Not that he's not a good player, but there are a lot of players just as good or better than he is.

Not a good draft for safeties though this year. That could help him out!

Can't go wrong with Danny Shelton:

“Shelton was the star of Senior Bowl week, and in a Draft light on big-boy defensive tackles, he could go as high as top 5 this April,” writes Schrager. “Shelton was a man amongst boys in Mobile, tossing centers and guards with ease, and penetrating the backfield. He had some injury issues at Washington but looked good during his senior year and interviewed well in Indianapolis.”

Shelton's NFL.com profile states that he has a “thick frame and powerful upper body,” but has the endurance as well to keep up with quicker players.

“Bends well for a big man and has ability to play with leverage. Space-eater who is able to maintain good positioning against double teams. Consistently gets his hands inside offensive linemen first. Controls, sees it and sheds to make tackles. Surprising ability to swat cut blocks and chase stretch plays laterally. Played a high percentage of Washington's defensive snaps. Has the strength and athleticism to dominate in the running game.”

As far as comparrison to a current NFL player, NFL.com has New England Patriots’ nose tackle Vince Wilfork.

Since being selected by the Patriots in the first-round of the 2004 NFL Draft, Wilfork has become one of the most dominant lineman of his era, appearing in five Pro Bowls and helping New England win two Super Bowls.

NFL.com BOTTOM LINE: With his thick frame and powerful upper body, Shelton has moments where he can dominate at the point of attack. He was forced to chase sideline to sideline due to the nature of Pac-12 offenses, but when he faced downhill competition like Stanford, he stepped up. Shelton is an above average interior pass rusher for a man his size thanks to his surprising athleticism. He is a fit in a two-gap scheme and could benefit from playing fewer snaps than he was forced to play at Washington.

I'm hoping on trading down getting two first and second round picks. 1st round I'd grab Wayne's and Shelton. Or Shelton n Collins. 2nd round I'd draft the two best Online prospects. This would be the best scenario. Or Shelton n either or Beasley,Fowler Jr.

I'm going with Shelton. I don't expect Williams to be there at 5. IMO Sherff isn't a top 5 (or even 10) pick. Shelton will make the whole front 7 better.

If you draft Waynes....possibly move Amerson or Breeland to FS....You can cut Hall and his salary. Waynes and Breeland (at CB) might lock down their guys and then you can bring heat all the time and from various positions....ala Dick LaBeau. and generate pass rush

5. Washington Redskins — Washington DT Danny Shelton: The Redskins need to get younger and stronger up front to help their secondary while opening rush lanes for OLBs Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy. Shelton will tie up plenty of blockers with his massive body (6-2, 339) and relentless effort

Same. I'm very curious where he sits in Scot's board. He might be #1. He might be #20. The 3 things sticking out about him right now for me are his size, his effort, and how he looked in the Senior Bowl.

Image

By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

Shelton was the talk of the Senior Bowl with his combination of power, size, and burst. He was a load and nearly impossible to single-block. In the pass-rushing one-on-ones and in run defense, he had his way with blockers. Shelton was one of the nation's sack leaders at defensive tackle in 2014 with nine. He totaled 87 tackles and 16.5 tackles for a loss, too. The 6-foot-1, 343-pounder is a big, disruptive tackle who has a surprising burst.

In 2013, Shelton turned in 59 tackles with 3.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks. He had an excellent bowl game against BYU with seven tackles and a lot of disruption at the point of attack. Shelton recorded 45 tackles, .5 sacks and four tackles for a loss in 2012.

2015 Senior Bowl: Danny Shelton Interview

By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

The favorite to be the first player drafted from the 2015 Senior Bowl roster is Washington nose tackle Danny Shelton. The 6-foot-1, 343-pound lineman is a quick and physical defender who causes lots of disruption at the point of attack. We caught up with Shelton to discuss his Senior Bowl experience, his final collegiate season, and which NFL teams are showing interest in him.

Who are some of the teams you've met with thus far at the Senior Bowl?

"Today I have a meeting set up with the Texans. I've met with the Browns, Bears, Packers, Buccaneers, Dolphins. A lot of teams really."

Do any of those teams stand out as showing the most interest in you?

"I really don't know. It is all the same kind of meetings just seeing where you're coming from and my background."

Talk about your conditioning. I think it was really impressive for a blocker of your size to play four quarters like you did throughout the season.

"Really, it is necessary. Nine out of 10 teams were playing fast tempo. We really take that into consideration in preparing for the season. I felt like it was just something we had to do if we wanted to be one of the top defenses in the Pac 12."

At the weigh-in this morning you threw an arm up in the air after your weight was announced. Was that a celebration of making weight or maintaining where you wanted to be from the end of the year?

"It was just seeing improvement. I was excited to see it. I've been concentrating on dropping weight and it's finally coming."

love Shelton but don't like that he's reportedly not that great ...

this from John Keim ... "Every player in the draft has warts, even Shelton. There is concern about his consistency -- and the reasons for that inconsistency. The knock on him is that he looked great against lesser players"

no question we could use him but we could use a lot of players - I really hope there's a lot of teams looking to find a way to move up

All of a sudden, I'm seeing several "mock draft" sites listing the Skins as taking Amari Cooper at #5. It blows my mind. Is he the BPA at #5 for us........? Hmmmmm.

Yeah I've seen that a lot lately too. It wouldn't be a popular pick (as illustrated by your "blows my mind" comment), but its not hard to understand the argument for it. If you're drafting BPA, you don't pass on Calvin Johnson just because you have DJax/Garcon. You always draft the most talented guy on your board. And before anybody starts yelling at me that Cooper is not Calvin Johnson, I'm not saying he is and I'm not advocating that the Redskins should draft him.

We also have way too much money invested in WR right now. We've lacked a big WR for years, and it has consistently hurt us in the red zone. You could draft Cooper or Kevin White to address both those issues.

Anyway, this all assumes Cooper is really such a good prospect worthy of the #5 pick. I don't know if that is true or not. I find it hard to believe that he would be graded higher than some of those d-line guys who will probably still be on the board then. My point is just that you either believe in drafting BPA or you don't.

That doesn't mean you're not drafting BPA, does it? That just means you have two guys graded out the same and you have to make a judgement call.

I think after tommorow and the free agent frenzy we will have a pretty good idea which direction they are going in. With DL free agents already saying they are coming and a couple other defensive players looking seriously at joining the Skins I am going with OL with the #5 pick

Don't forget we have signed a couple offensive lineman. Don't know their talent level but Nsekhe is 6'8" @ 325lb and Larsen is 6'4" @ 315lb.

The talent just isn't there (IMO) for OL at #5. The only way that pick turns to OL is if we trade out of 5, which is certainly possible...

With the recent bizarre maneuvering by the Philadelphia Ducks, I expect a frenzy of speculation that Mariotta is now in play for the Redskins. At 5.

Whether true or not, I believe the Front Office will be doing all the can to fuel this, in an effort to draw in over priced offers for the pick.

My nightmare is that the don't get an offer that they want, and take him.

Seems to me that would make those offers go to the teams with the 1-4 picks. I really don't understand why we would trade the pick to a team that wants Mariotta, if we really wanted him.

I have said, in other threads, that I don't think the team wants him. I guess I felt it would be presumed in this case (why else would they deliberately fan the flames?). The risk would be what you stated... But, consider, if you REALLY want, say, Williams, how else do you increase the chances that he falls? The year we took Orakpo, whom I believe was the player that we really wanted all along, the team deliberately fanned speculation that they wanted Mark Sanchez...

I see. I thought you were saying teams that want Mariotta, such as the Smeagols, would trade us for the 5th pick to get the guy, because we were putting it out there that we want him. It just made no sense.
