It may lead to some growing pains early in the season, but we will be better off as the season progresses. I believe Iupati is a FA, and would easily be the best G on the board. Sign him and draft the best T in round 1 and throw him at RT. Draft a C in round 2 or 3 and let LeRibus, Moses, and Long fight it out for the LG spot. Easier said then done, but there's no reason we can't explore replacing eveyone but Trent.

Iupati is good but we would have to overpay for just a "good" player that we could draft of similar talent in the 2nd round. I would overpay for a solid RT though, they don't come around too often.

We need a lot though. I think we should blow it up coaches and all.

Iupati has been one of the best OG in the game since he's been drafted. He is far better than just "good". He would be a MAJOR upgrade and give our line some nastiness.

I hear you he would be an upgrade I just think he would be overpaid and not worth the price. We could have the opportunity to draft a guy that could be better and cheaper. Good franchises have faith to find guards in the draft only bad orgs go out and pay 8-10mill per year for a guard thats not homegrown. Iupati to me is not even the best oline prospect on his current line (Joe Staley, A.Davis) He is graded a bit higher because he is on a good team, power run scheme and isnt asked to pass block 40 times a game. I would be happy if we get him, just think longterm we could get a guy with his talent likely in the 2nd rd.

Thats a yes for me.

Its time to go back to what we are. We need big beastly lineman who can do it all.

My plan of attack would be to snatch a right tackle from free agency a proven pro bowl type talent and pay him a solid contract. That should help solidy pass protection on the edges.

Our guards need to be upgraded. I mean we need some real road grading type guards. If it were me I would trade away our 3rd round pick for another 2nd round pick and draft two guards in the 2nd round.

1) There is no doubt that we need better starters.
2) If some players currently on roster can't step up, we are screwed.

someone has suggested we could start by finding a RT ... it's going to take time ...

making this franchise into a decent team is going to take more than 2 years

It could happen in one off season if the right person were to join our staff.

Look what happened in RG3s rookie year. We went to the playoffs in one season with a rookie.

Also look at whats happening in Dallas. They drafted solid Oline help and now are doing very well. Same thing can happen for us.

We have plenty of offensive weapons but our front lines are weak.
Our defensive line isnt terrible but could be upgraded as well. Especially nose tackle.

Ill say it again. If the Oline and Dline were upgraded we could be a playoff team instantly.
RT a solid guard or two and the Oline would be good. One nose tackle is all we need for the Dline.

Is that true about Lauvao? I feel like I've been hearing all season that he was a disappointment and not a great FA signing.

I think it is, but I haven't been systematic in assessing our line. I have noticed him making good plays and haven't noticed terrible breakdowns like we've seen at other positions. But I could easily be wrong, since I'm just going off what I've seen on Sundays without any real in-depth analysis.

I've been a bit harsh about the O line but to me they have not played well as a unit for a while now and maybe I'm being a bit hard on them because we used to have such good offensive lines here ...

also, this line was basically put together for Kyle's offense and now Gruden and McVay want something different

I will say though the sight of defensive players in our backfield so quickly after the snap is just not right

hopefully we can get someone in charge and who has a better knowledge of what type of O linemen are better suited to what Gruden wants to run here offensively - the run game here has to get better and this will surely help the rest of the offense work better

the answer to the original poster is no .. but .. it is a possibility that in 3 years, Trent Williams will be the only lineman left from Sept. 2013

and ... that is a good thing

People can say what they want about how our Oline really ins't that bad. I am no expert but my view tells me they need to be upgraded ASAP! TW has heart. He is a keeper obviously. They rest can be upgraded to HOG like contention. What a difference it makes to have a dominate Oline most of the time. Even the Hogs got beat, but to be the best is easier than finding the miracle QB out there to play with this line. There is no real future without a dominate Oline sorry.

Are we all watching the same team? The O Line is horrible. How many times have we seen the other teams defense sack the quarterback or stop the running back at or behind the line of scrimmage using only a four man rush? Lots!!! IMO, get rid of the O Line except Williams and Lichlighter (sp?). It can't be any worse.

To answer this thread, i believe we need to start next year with 2 new starters on the Oline.

I don't believe this oline overhaul is a one year fix. Next year, the left side remains as is. The right side has two new guys. We can't just fix the oline this off-season, other needs are there too. I believe we could take a major step toward fixing the oline one of two ways:

1). Sign a vet FA right tackle, no older than 28. A guy who is just a RT comes cheaper. Having a guy who can slide over to replace Trent would be more expensive. Use the first round pick on defense (line). 2nd round pick is RG. Should be able to get great RG at 37'ish. Compton, Long, Moses, or Chester (at vets min) as backups.

Or

2) 1st round pick - draft tackle from Iowa -Scherf (sp?). He can play LT if Trent pulled up injured. Will be solid RT. Sign a pass rusher or RG in free agency. 2nd rd pick -- either RG or pass rusher, whatever we don't sign in FA. Same oline backups.

In 2016, replace LG and C. Oline overhauled in 2 years.

No - we just need an offensive line that can help Morris do his thing and help the QB make plays

whatever that takes ...

So... question is, should we replace them all, new o line coach and all? Are there any cons to doing a complete overhaul?

-snip-

This issue is much bigger than the QB issue, you could plug in peyton manning, aaron rodgers, brady.... they may do a little better, but they will still get crushed and lose games.

My answer to the question posed by the thread is "If we can sign better guys - including Trent - yes."

Given the cap and the draft, I'd say the most we can replace from outside the current roster is 2 spots. So a few guys we already have need to step up or we are likely to run with at least 3 of the current 5. Unless the teams in front of us get real smart and draft linemen, I'd use our first pick on one and try to replace our RG.

There is no reason to make replacing Licht any kind of priority. We are set at LT and C. LG and RT are adequate.

I think a very good RG combined with decisive QB play would have us all saying this line is not bad at all. Better D and Specials would also take a lot of pressure away from the offense.

My 2 cents

Looks like we got the RG and the decisive play at QB. A RT came out of nowhere (Moses). Speaking of centers ...

Austin Reiter - C - Redskins

Redskins C Austin Reiter added 12-15 pounds of muscle this offseason.

Beat writer Mike Jones came away impressed with Reiter's performance at minicamp, specifically praising his ability to get to the next level on stretch running plays. Reiter spent his rookie year on the Redskins' practice squad and figures to be on the roster bubble again in 2016.

an oldie ... the O line is not quite there yet from the debacle that was 2013 & 2014 but it's a lot better than that terrible group ...
