When the Players agreed to the contract, they gave Goodell the power he's yielding that you find unsatisfying...don't forget, the players got something in return during the negotiations. We don't see them giving that back to the owners! If they didn't want the Commissioner to have this much power, don't agree to in the deal... I worked in a Company that had a union and I was the main Mgmt contact for our Mgmt Bargaining team. You have to give up to get. You can't give up something, get what you wanted in return and then not suffer through whatever you gave up. Talk to the players negotiating team...sounds like they gave up stuff they now regret, SORRY! You signed the deal!

The league has a policy that you can't wear "other" stuff -- if you don't deal with each offender, the next one you fine is going to point and say, you didn't fine him...consistency in policing is key. It's only $10K and like another poster said, Addidias is paying it...RGIII isn't.

Of course Goodell is the owner's guy...and in our current society of rich people are the enemy and income redistribution, no one likes him. Honestly, I think he's very smart and has done a good job. Being popular is not how I'd guage his success on the job.

You know, I hear you. What have the rich ever done in this country to warrant being cast as the enemy of truth justice or the american way? Shame on all those non-rich people for not wanting to be slaves, work outside of a sweatshop, not have their land stolen from them at pennies on the dollar (if that) for railroads, shopping malls or whatever or other whim strikes their robber baron fancy, not have monopolistic industries ruin the competitive balance in a given industry, wanting an actual representative government of the people rather than for the lobbyists, want to go to a sporting contest with their family without skipping the next mortgage payment, wanting laws to protect their right to establish enough bargaining power to actually get those magnanimous rich people to negotiate paying them more than $0.75/hour, and my personal favorite, shame on the nfl players for signing a deal that has anything in it that they might later complain about in the negotiations precipitated by the owners purposefully killing the old deal because, and get this, the players were making too much money.

Sorry dude, but that is way over the top. The players agree to wear Nike in their labor agreement for their "job" where they make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for playing a kids game. The players aren't the smartest guys in the world as you know, and the ONLY thing they care about when they negotiate is how much money they get. They can all comlain all they want about Goddell, but when it was time to decide about punishements and things like that, they said they didn't care and just asked about money. And you can't make this a rich vs poor argument because both sides are rich. And don't complain about rich, successful people, odds are, you work for one, and you live in a country, unlike others, where you could become one if you actually wanted to. Sorry, most people here want to be rich but don't want to put in the work or time necessary to become one. They just complain about "the man". Yeah...heard that my whole life and it is always from people who don't want to work.

In that case, you choose the company you keep, poorly. Many complain about the man precisely because they work hard and continue to be thwarted by what they view as "the man"

I'm amazed to find out that the protracted labor negotiations boiled down to the players wanting more money and caring about nothing else. Pretty sure it was actually the owners who renegotiated to cut back the player's existing cut off the pie. Of to make it clear the rich guys wanted more and the poor guys were trying to maintain their ground that started the whole thing. Again typical of the man trying to keep a group of people down.

And when the conversation is between those who own a team and those who work for them, they are not both rich. It is logical fallacy to ascribe economic terms applicable to the normal socioeconomic groupings of rich and poor to those who are in the same income bracket but not within remotely the same income. In fact you make closer to what Robert griffin makes than he does to Dan Snyder. But go ahead and tell yourself that the money the owners make is more legitimate than what the players do.

It's always easy to slam someone when you don't stand in his shoes, or sit in his seat. We do NOT see all the facts, we see him through the eyes of the media -- which is certainly not impartial!

What's the big deal? Why should the league care what he's wearing anyway? Unless he's wearing something that says "the NFL sucks", what's the violation?

It is written in the collective bargaining agreement the players signed that they will only wear Nike stuff at official functions or they will be fined. Its been this way for a long time.

Agreed, though I don't get the issue with this one. The owners and players both benefit from the Nike contract. It doesn't preclude RG3 from having his own personal deal, but he can't follow his own deal in league functions. RG3 benefits from both. If he pays the fine and doesn't care, fine. But there's nothing wrong with this fine.

Exactly. And since players salaries are set according to league revenue and that means the Nike contract benefits RG3's salary and retirement plan. It's not a big deal, he just shouldn't do it again. Just wear his own brand outside league functions and he's good.
