Cooley is the definition of "bleed B&G".. one of the funniest NFL players ever w his Cooley zone, blogs, videos, and almost reality show. His hatred for the pukes is epic, he is a true leader, aswell as prankster.. I wish my boss was Cooley hell I'd enjoy going to work more that's for sure.
As for his performance on field he is a beast and i won't give anyone the time of day that argues that at all. Top three? Eh maybe his best year but top ten no doubt. I see this year being a big year for him now that he is fully healed and will have all of the offseason to prepare properly w the staff. I see him helping rgiii get up to NFL speed w his veteran insight and ability to make plays but also and just as if not more importantly show him how to have fun out there and enjoy being a pro.

Cooooooooooooooooooooooo!

the fact is Davis is not known for making great decisions off the field

He's not the player he was because he's been hurt the last two years, He has come back from his injuries a few times without showing any drop off. I don't see why he wouldn't be back, although he might have to restructure his contract.

Being the guy that he is I don't see that as a problem either

maybe I did not make it clear that Cooley has some intangibles that will help this franchise DESPITE the fact that he's not as good as he was

I would be V surprised if he's not here - he will continue to help this offense

21 personnel = 2 RB's and 1 TE. You are referring to a 12 personnel. Anyway, I agree

Cooley said his knee feels good. He also weighs 237 pounds, the lightest of his career.

“I feel the best I’ve felt,” he said. “It’s to the point that I trust I’m healthy. It’s tough to know but I’ve worked hard enough and ran hard enough and I’ve had no swelling.”

What Cooley doesn't say is his knee is 100%. What he does say doesn't sound like confidence in his knee.

According to a team source, the Redskins haven’t approached Cooley about restructuring his contract either.

I see this as not good news for Cooley.
I am thinking, that the Skins will not approach Cooley about restructuring until they know that for sure he will be on the roster.

Rich Tandler:
Chris Cooley looking very fit, no wraps or braces on knee. Moving and cutting very well.

Contrary to Tandler's post, it was posted on the boards that Cooley appeared to be favoring one of his legs in the OTA video posted.

I hear his weight is down too. He may struggle to carry the weight needed while maintaining a healthy knee. He could be in some trouble. Always thought of him as one of Gibbs' good choices. I'd hate to see him go but if he must ...

He can't lose too much more weight. At the beginning of last year he was down to 235lbs. My son was at his football camp last June (and will be again this June) and he looked too thin to be an NFL TE. I hope that he hasn't gotten any smaller.

+1 - all players will compete for roster spots
Cooley will have to earn his spot too - nothing is taken for granted here anymore

Cooley is preparing the best he can - losing weight might be a good thing in his estimation but may not suit what the coaches want

From Rich Tandler:

4. I will have a full article on Chris Cooley later today or tomorrow but I was surprised to hear him say that his weight is down to 237. That’s 18 pounds lighter than his listed weight of 255 and just a couple of pounds heavier than converted wide receiver Niles Paul. The lighter weight is great for running routes but not necessarily good when it comes to taking on 270-pound linebackers. We will see if Cooley can make up for his reduced bulk with leverage and technique when he needs to block. The answer to that will have to wait until training camp, when full-contact blocking is allowed, and the preseason games.

3. Speaking of Paul, he looked very good yesterday. Every time you looked up he was catching another dart from Griffin. That doesn’t mean that he is going to jump ahead of Cooley or Fred Davis on the depth chart but it can’t hurt to develop a good rapport with the starting quarterback.

Can all 3 guys (Davis, Cooley, Paul) really be productive? I can see Paul really having a good year, he's my guess for breakout player. With Cooley and Paul both being small for TE's, maybe we see Davis having a more prototypical role?

...If all 3 guys are on the final 53, I think we'll see sets with all of them down near the goal line.

except apparently at Quarterback where In order to avoid annoying daily questions, it was necessary to name a stater before allowing anyone else to compete. a starter by the way who's never thrown an NFL pass before and who was the redskins plan B after they met with Peyton manning first but were told no.

I think it's a big leap of faith to suggest that Paul might be a breakout player this year. To be fair though, you did say it was a guess! ;-)

The tight end position is one of the many interesting position battles to observe this offseason. I won't pretend that I have ANY idea how many tight ends will even be on the final roster. The intrigue surrounding Cooley's health and Paul changing positions makes the situation hard to call. The other wildcard is the Davis situation, and whether the management feel they can trust him to stay clean from now on.

It will be very interesting to see what Cooley does this year coming off his injury. I am skeptical, but he has proven that when healthy, he is a top TE in the league. The big question mark is whether he is in fact healthy and if he can go back to being 100%. Last year, it was obvious he was hurting and he did not play well.

Davis proved last year that he can be a very good NFL TE. I wouldn't want to see his time diminsh, but they need to figure out a way to get everyone on the field -- especially with all the WR pickups. You could have used more 2 TE sets, but with all our weapons at WR, it may be better to have 4 WRs & 1 TE over 3WR & 2 TEs (in circumstances that warrant it).

I personally, don't see Paul seeing that much time barring injury. However, the likelihood of an injury is high given the long season.

Cooley wasn't healthy in 2010 when he put up top three TE numbers. He was just worse in 11 than he was in 10. A long as his knee is as good as it was in 10 he wil put up top ten numbers.

If he is truely healthy must of the season, then he will again put up PB numbers like he did in 2010.

106.7 has been talking about weather or not we should keep Cooley for the past couple of days and they have no idea how good Cooley has been. I don't think most fans do either. Here is how he ranked against other TEs:

Code: Select all

Season Rec Yards
2010     2nd 3rd
2008     2nd 4th
2007     5th 5th
2006     8th 7th
2005     4th 6th

Sure he has been injured in 2009 and 2011, but in the past four seasons (including the two he was hurt) he has been a top three TE twice. AND over the past seven seasons he has been a top eight TE for every year he wasn't injured (5 out 7 seasons) and top five 4 out of 7.

Everyone says that you can't pay Cooley the money he is making to be a backup TE. I contend, that if healthy, Cooley will be the starter at TE and not Davis.

Cooley is older but proven! Davis has never posted top ten numbers and there is no guarantee he will post better numbers than Cooley. Cooley should post better numbers if healthy. Now that is a big if, but FD has a big if hanging over his head too. His season could go up in smoke just as easy as Cooley could get injured!

Besides what is wrong with having two TEs capable catching 60 balls (even though Davis never has)?

we'll see - I'm a Cooley fan but Davis is the better TE at this time

I totally do not agree with the assumption that Davis is just as likely to be banned by the NFL as Cooley is likely to be injured
WHY?

Cooley will have an opportunity to make the roster and I think he's here for 1 more year - IF he's healthy

What are you basing this on? Cooley's health? Because the numbers just don't bear that out.
