QB - go with Beck, cut McNabb - hold nose and resign Grossman

WR - re-sign Moss and keep in slot, go after Rice from Vikings, throw Hankerson in there from day one

CB - stay away from Asomugha, he's awesome but will cost too much, try to re-sign Rodgers for reasonable $, otherwise go after Josh Wilson

In all close calls go with youth. Don't worry too much about our record this year.

Talk to Kyle about going long so often late in halves when a first down is crucial.

I like the decision. HC and son accepted their mistake.

Time for Beck to show what he's got. I feel he will play well. It is his make of break chance in his career.

Go John!

I think thats why people bash Kyle. He tends to abandon the run even when the game is still in reach.

Yup. You can't beat the other team's D Line and LB's down when you give up on the run after the 2nd series.

There were plenty of games in the 80's, when the run game was stuffed repeatedly in the first half... and then it would catch up with the Dline... and holes started appearing. If you intend to be a running team... well... you have to run.

One of the problems is, no one fears our passing game... that does help to loosen things up... but, geeze...

That looks like the course.
Sadly in year 1, McNabb turned out to be a blunderous trade. Had Shanny gotten out of him what he anticipated (McNabb changing his mechanics and working longer hours), we might be talking 5-0 at this point in year 2.

Also in Year 1 was - put in the defensive and offensive schemes even though the personnel didn't fit. In the long run, it was the right thing to do.

Exactly right. By year three, the D is sick and the O will catch up

fact is our offense is not ready to suddenly be something we are not

if we get down by 20, we should continue to do what we CAN do
NOT make the hole deeper by trying stuff with players that do not suit the plays Kyle wants to run

FIRST OFF - DON"T GET DOWN BY 20 - accept the fact that we're a scrappy team and hope for the best
eliminate mistakes offensively and play to our strength - DEFENSE
NOTE to Kyle: - DO NOT try and do stuff we cannot do

If we are getting a lot of points scored against us it's NOT because of our defense - it's been because our offense has given the other team the ball

KYLE SHOULD NOT BE CALLING PLAYS THAT HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF TURNING THE BALL OVER

I don't agree with most of what you said.

What you are suggesting is if something isn't working keep doing it regardless even of there simply is no expectation ford it to start working.

The Defense was exactly who is to blame for us getting down by 20! Is it too much to ask for them to force a punt or three. The D was every bit as the offense in the first half. The D was much better in the second half but that had almost as much to do with the E girls not needing to score any more.

I know you don't like what Kyle called, but this notion that you should keep winning plays that aren't working, just because you don't trust Rex is just emotional fan nonsense.

I'm not suggesting anything like that - you're looking at it that way

Just take a look at the number of running plays and the number of pass plays this team has used so far
- we are NOT a pass oriented offense ... yet

Kyle calls TOO MANY plays based on what he thinks will work, not what this offense is good enough to handle .... yet

we get away from the run game simply because we are behind - we are not set up to do that well ... yet
part of the reason we are behind is because Kyle is calling plays that Grossman & the offense aren't good enough to execute

I understand that we will pass the ball but I think that Kyle's play calling needs to cut back on the number of pass plays and should ONLY include 'safer' pass plays ... for now

Beck will help cut down on the turnovers - this offense needs to be more run oriented

I like attempting the "big play" from time to time. It's ballsy, and when effective will result in points on the board. I just don't like Kyle calling for a "big play" almost three times every drive. Maybe once or twice a game at most, until the offense proves they can execute it properly.

I guess I'm just frustrated that Kyle seems to be trying too much - we do not need to be flashy or 'ballsy'

this offense is getting there and has some good things going for it - we do NOT have a really good QB

I'll admit to not being a Kyle fan .... YET - Kyle needs to throttle it back a little

be interesting to see if he becomes a little more careful with Beck

we all want flash but we really need to just be more effective and I think that using the clock and more of the run game will help

we have not managed our time with the ball on offense well and as a result we have put more pressure on our defense

I think we managed the clock decently (with the exception of not hurrying up despite the fact that we were down 2 scores) in the 4th quarter. If we continue to get first downs and into the red zone, the game will be in our favor. We have to keep that TOP high.

This just does not make sense.

If we "do not do stuff that we cannot do" and we are not effectively running the ball. That would fall into the list of things we cannot do.

What plays do you think are being called that have a high chance of a turnover? If you are implying that any pass play has that chance then we are in big trouble. That would mean we cannot pass the ball (Too high of a chance of turnovers) and cannot run the ball ("Don't do stuff we cannot do")

Greg Cosell Tweets on May 18, 2011 concerning John Beck

Okay Redskins fans. Went back to film study notes of J. Beck senior year at BYU. Broke down 4 gms. This was after 2006 NFL season.

More J. Beck: Effortless mechanics, played relaxed + poised, game was in slow motion to him mentally, good touch + feel, very competitive.

More Beck: Low release point, became 5'11" instead of 6'2". Pocket awareness + understanding of pressure. Effective in muddied pocket.

More Beck: Good decision maker, a rhythm + flow to his game. Biggest issues on tape wefre arm strength (a real concern) + low release point.

More Beck: When I studied him I saw similarities to Brees (remember this was after 2006 season). Brees got chance to develop, Beck didn't.

A lot of questions re: Beck arm strength in Shanahan offense. To me, arm strength limitations always an issue, no matter what pass offense.

@redskinsblog Interesting point. My analysis from 2006 coaching tape. Very possible (like Brees) his arm has gotten stronger last few years.

More Beck: Not realistic to base long term evaluation on 4 starts in 2007 for bad MIA team. System QB who needs support (run, def, sp teams)

@coopersam Would have ranked Beck higher than Ponder + Dalton. Liked Beck coming out of BYU. Thought he was a starting NFL QB.

Greg Cosell on Beck on August 29, 2011
Back to Cosell talkng about the 2007 Beck before offering his current-day thoughts after the quarterback's pre-season opener...

Cosell: He had a good feel for the passing game. The ball came out quick. Obviously not a big arm, but not a weak arm. A timing-rhythm guy who understood the passing game. Obviously the few chances that he got early in his career, that three-game stretch in Miami where he had all those issues and he got tossed on the scrap heap and everybody forgot about him and decided that he can’t play.

I watched him this week against the Colts in the preseason game and he started to look a little more like the John Beck I remember. Whether that happens when the regular season starts I can’t answer that, but he looked like a professional quarterback.

Looked like a professional quarterback. That's a statement nobody outside the Shanahan's was willing to make, perhaps even before that Colts game.

Today, I heard Greg Cosell on ESPN 980 talking about John Beck. He said that the biggest knock on him is he misses too many easy throws. He should have a higher completion percentage than what he delivers. He feels that Beck will be a better fit for the offense than Grossman, but Beck will not be the savior for this offense.

Skinny on Greg Cosell:
To N.F.L. insiders, Cosell is a treasure trove of information. Pro football writers and broadcasters regularly hit him up privately for analysis. General managers ask for his assessment of draft prospects. Coaches are curious about his methods of breaking down film. “I got to know Greg from taking trips down to NFL Films over the last 15 or 20 years,” Sports Illustrated’s Peter King said. “He was always sort of the wizard behind the curtain. I always respected his opinion because you could tell he watches every game. He watches all the players. And it isn’t about who has the best stats, it’s about the best players.”

Having a competent QB helps your running game. If the D is not concerned with your QB beating them, then they can just stack the box. Just like Phily did, just like Dallas did, and just like the Rams started doing later in the game.

I would expect Carolina to stack the box too until Beck proves that they need to back off. He may be able to do it and maybe not.
