I'm not understanding why the number of attempts hurts a rookie (he did play 4 games in '09 with the 'Skins, so I'm not sure he's technically a rookie) kicker? I would think that more attempts as a rookie should actually help a kicker shake out the nerves during the season. So what he had more attempts than most? What does that matter?
His percentage sucked plain and simple. Gano was a decent kicker from 40-49 yards (11-14, 78.6%); thats it. He sucked from 20-29 yards (8-10, 80%) He sucked from 30-39 yards (4-7, 57.1%) and he really sucked from 50+ yards (0-3, 0%).
I'd like to give the young guy another shot to get his head right, so I'd bring in some competition and whoever is better in practice gets the job. If Gano gets the job than he starts the season on a very short leash. He misses another 20-39 yard field goal when it really counts and he costs us the game then he's out. That's just how I would do it.

With all due respects...I question whether we've seen any talent from him or any signs that he can get it done. But I do believe that you're correct in saying that he needs to believe in himself. However, I would disagree that having some competition wouldn't make him better. I think that if my boss brought in somebody to compete for MY job, that would light a fire under my back side.
as always...

That's exactly how I feel.
However, I would go so far as to say that if he misses another kick from 20-39 Whether it counts or not, he should be on the 1st flight out of town.

I understand (HOWEVER - the NFL is V different from 'normal' jobs and the players should not need to be motivated) - I do agree with the concept
I just think that all Mike needs to know is that he CAN rely on this guy for each and EVERY kick inside of 30 yards - THAT's IT
If Mike thinks he can get that then he does not need to 'motivate' this guy - if this guy is somehow not 'motivated' to be better at what he does each and every week OR he misses (given a good snap & hold) from inside his 'gimme' range then he should be released immmediately
I don't think that Gano kicked well at all BUT I also think that he's a lot better than we saw last season
all Mike needs to know is that Danny Smith (or whoever) makes him believe that Gano can and will be a lot better
all Gano needs to know is that he needs to just do his job a lot better than he did or he will not be in a competition for his job - he'll be gone
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
I'd love to see a kicking competition but I'm not that sure that tells us anything
This guy had some really bad kicks - the next really bad blunder should cost him his job

NFL rules say you have to be on the roster 9 games to count as a season, so technically it was his rookie season.TeeterSalad wrote:

I don't think anyone here is defending his percentage, how can you say he was decent from 40-49 but sucked from 20-29?TeeterSalad wrote:His percentage sucked plain and simple. Gano wasn't the worst kicker in the League is all that I'm saying. Maybe Shanny should have brought back the guy that was here last season, he hit 93% of his attempts. I could live with him not being able to hit from 50+, IF his 30-39 yard percentage has was above 75%
I agree with this 100%TeeterSalad wrote:I'd like to give the young guy another shot to get his head right, so I'd bring in some competition and whoever is better in practice gets the job. ...Because making nearly 80% of field goals from 40-49 yards out is pretty good; while making 80% of field goals from 20-29 yards out is pretty terrible.1niksder wrote:I don't think anyone here is defending his percentage, how can you say he was decent from 40-49 but sucked from 20-29?

Kickers are judged by their consistency - a FG kicker that does not make over 90% of his attempts from inside 30 yards is not a good FG kickerTeeterSalad wrote:...Because making nearly 80% of field goals from 40-49 yards out is pretty good; while making 80% of field goals from 20-29 yards out is pretty terrible.1niksder wrote:I don't think anyone here is defending his percentage, how can you say he was decent from 40-49 but sucked from 20-29?
Gano can do that but ....
I think that Mike will decide if Gano needs the competition or not fairly early - Gano will be just like everyone else - he'll be trying to keep his job
Kickers have a bit of an advantage in the current situation - all they need to do is make sure they're in great shape and work on their talents - from what we've heard, Gano has added a bit of muscle by lifting and working out - hopefully he's going to be ready to show that he can be relied on
this kid has the talent and this is his job to lose
