On this we're in total agreement. I have been a part of Union negotiations myself (obviously not with the NFL), and very little is going to get done in 24 hours if the sides are still as far apart as they seem to be.
They agreed to extend the deadline 24 hours in order to see if they can agree to a longer extension.
This will be done without the 2 sides actually meeting face to face over the next 24 hours.

The owners make me sick, they think they're not getting a big enough piece of the pie? Owning an NFL franchise is just a license to print money, the players are the ones who put butts in the seats and allow the owners their ridiculous fortunes and the owners are trying to exploit them even further.
It's disgusting.

I think I heard recently that there is a slight chance that one of the judges (Doty?) could 'order' both sides to go back to operating as per when the 'old' CBA expired in 2009? Not that much has transpired since
both the players and the NFL are really screwing this up now

Being a die hard Skins fan, and someone willing to shell out the bucks for DTV Sunday Ticket ... I'm sick of both groups of Millionaires squabbling.
If the majority of the fans simply told these clowns ... if you shut down, we're not coming back, they'd change their tune.
Where did sanity go? The ticket prices are outrageous ... parking outrageous ... concessions outrageous ..... more more more .... I can't live on 3 Million a year ... I need more ..... GO PARK CARS ... GO SELL INSURANCE.
If these spoiled brats kill the 2011 season, they won't see me in 2012.

There are now reports (Friday 3/4 at 1350 hours) that the CBA has been extended for another 7 days
IF the owners were looking to lockout the players (as the player's union has made V clear) then you would think they would want to get to that as soon as possible
I take this as a good sign - but I may just be being too optimistic
the 'negotiations' will now drag on a little longer

Unless one side is ready to blink a one week extension is largely PR and very little else. It looks good in the papers but unless they're actually willing to work at things it won't amount to much.

Neither side is winning the PR war. Hopefully, a one week extension represents a serious commitment to working something out. Only time will tell.

It seems that the players are winning the PR war. If you listen to sports talk radio, both locally and nationally like on ESPN Radio, a lot more support seems to be behind the players. On ESPN Radio a few days ago they were talking about a poll that was done and in it about 70% of people sided with the players.

I'd agree that the players are winning the PR side of this at this time
HOWEVER - IF these guys do not get a new CBA in place very soon OR if a part of this season is lost, that will mean nothing - the NFL will not be hurt nearly as badly as the players in the event of a lockout or a shortened season
The NFL will still be making bucket loads of money in a few years when a lot of these players are not
the winners and losers here are measured ONLY by the amount of money they have and the owners will be still be making a lot of money when a lot of these players are not
winning the PR battle in this deal is about as important as the Redskins winning the offseason 'title' each year between 1999 and 2009 - we won it so often they renamed it the Dan Snyder trophy

The PR battle is the players' to lose. They're holding out for what has already been working over the last few years. Is there
anyone that feels bad for the owners because of how much money they make?
And in the debate between an 18-game schedule and player safety, with player safety being a hot issue in recent years (and especially this year), safety is going to win out.
Probably the one area where owners have the advantage is with a rookie salary cap, but that's not what's keeping both sides from coming to an agreement.

I don't feel bad for ANYBODY in this dispute, except the fans, who contribute significantly to the pot of gold that the two sides are squabbling over. There is more than enough money to go around, and both sides just want more than they need. I wish they could have a deal imposed on them by a federal judge and then they can both whine about it.

How about ordering to send "only" 50% of profits from players and owners to registered charities? Individual players have done good things on their own but most of the charity work done by the NFL and NFLPA is mainly about Public Relations.
Football has become far too wealthy for its own and the fans' good. This dispute is about GREED people.

For this to reach the point of having a judge step in and order an agreement it will have to go on much longer and get much nastier. That's not something that happens very often. Especially with Private companies. If they get to that point it's not going to be pretty at all.

some notes:
The last time a CBA got finished the players were all about the money
The CBA was extended 2 times after it was scheduled to run out in 2008
The owners now want to lessen the players share AND they want an additional billion on top of the billion they now take off the top
The owners want to go to an 18 game schedule
The players know they are going to get paid a lot - they now want to ensure they can enjoy it AND they want the owners to 'open' their books
The players might not get the larger share of the pot but they will not be taking a pay cut by any stretch
HOWEVER - the clock is ticking on a lot of these guys and they cannot "buy" that time back - they need to get their share soon
I really think that they will find a way to get it done but .....
like the man said - THIS IS ALL ABOUT GREED ... on both sides

.. but when you make that much money, $250 to them is like (maybe) $20 to us. Can't fault the guy for being stylish but geez dude, pay your friggin bills.
