Using him like the Jets did LT may be the best answer out there. He didn't have the big numbers, but he was a big contributor. I like it, but agree that it will have to be for less than he is owed now. There will likely be a cap, so we have to be careful that we don't put ourselves in a whole since we don't know what that cap number is.

For one thing, he averaged 4.2 yards per carry last year and 11 yards per reception. Is he an every down back? No. Can he be effective in a rotation, similar to how LT was used by the Jets? I think so.

Or Willis McGahee. SMH, he'd be great in the 4th qtr with his knowledge of the running scheme.

I think he comes back. There's no team where he's going to flourish but here. He's not going to want to learn a new scheme. He's going to take the vet min wherever he goes cus every team is going to want him to prove himself.

He's going to come back here for the same money he's gonna make anywhere else but he's going to have consistency by coming back.

I think the new CBA will be his biggest hurdle. Shanny want's him back but going to let him test the FA market to get a sense of what the league determines he's worth. Keep in mind his concussion issues. I think a lot of those players will find it hard to get PAID with that in their portfolio.

Portis as a third-down back makes perfect sense, if you ask me. He's still a good runner, is an OK receiver out of the backfield . . . but of course his biggest strength as a third-down back would be his blocking skills.

The only problem is, if we want him as a third-down back, we should really only pay him as much as that role deserves. And I think he's likely going to get starting money elsewhere.

Worst trade in Skin's history? No Way! Clinton gave us 7 seasons - 4 thousand yard seasons and the most telling thing about Clinton that some people forget is he was a scat back, but Gibbs asked him to put on the pounds and be his "John Riggins." Clinton willingly accepted the role and was pounded into a shortened career as a Redskin. On the field, he gave all he had and then tried to give more than what he had left. If you want to say that giving up a 2nd rounder and a shutdown corner for a star running back is not an equal deal, I would agree, but too say, the worst trade - that's going too far.

One of my fondest memories is Portis holding on to the coat tails of Sellers while flying through the hole or around the edge.

Portis was adamant that he remains a No. 1-quality running back despite his injury history and mileage (2,230 carries).

“I would never do [a two-back system],” he said. “I would never even let that adapt to my mind-set.”

At last week’s NFL Scouting Combine, Shanahan said Portis would be allowed to test the free agent market but did not close the door on his return albeit at a lower salary. Portis essentially nixed that during the radio interview.

“No need to try and continue to hold on and stick around doing something when we can part ways on good terms,” he said.

Not only does he embarrass our team nationally by benching (twice) an elite qb in D-MAC, but you draw out publicly a man ego spat with Fat Al....then you bench a very solid left guard for a very sorry one!!! ...Now! Back to the matter at hand. Losing Clinton Portis is more than a sad day...it is freakin terrible!!! He is still a feature back at 29. Plus, with two years off with shortened seasons makes him fresher with a lot in the tank! I CANNOT believe we have gone this route with the face of the Washington Redskins. This sickens me to my stomach! As CP went...so did the Skins. Look at the stats...when he rushed for a 100 yds., we usually won! I love CP! He is great! The trade for him and Champ was a no brainer...was Champ really that great for us, while he was here? Seriously? Champ did not want to be here anymore...so why not get the leagues best back at that time! I am most certain we got the better of that trade! Plus, Shawn Springs allowed me to easily forget Champ. Another feather in the cap of one of the greatest coaches of all time...Joe Gibbs! To land Portis here and build his offense around a great back and football player such as Clinton Portis. Portis played his heart out for the team and single-handedly carried us to the playoffs, without complaining when Gibbs literally ran him into the ground.

I agree with Portis playing his heart out, but totally disagree witjh the Bailey not coming back so lets pay someone to take him. It isn't like we didn't have other options. He was franchised so he had to come back if we didn't trade him and the Jets were willing to give us a 1st and players.

The whole "well Bailey was leaving anyway" is the dumbest excuse I have ever heard of. He wasn't leaving until they traded him. He was franchised so he wasn't going anywhere.

So lets say you still want to trade him. They didn't just give him away, they PAID the Broncos to take him.

Dumbest trade ever!

You just made my case even stonger. I'm was talking from a purely value stand point not a fit stand point.

Value.

We gave up the best corner in the NFL for (at that time) the third best RB in the AFC West. Not the NFL, just his division.

Fit.

A RB better fitted for the zone blocking not the Joe Gibbs power running system.

Look, I think CP gave his all on the field and whenever he had a good OL or wasn't hurt he produced. My comment was not about his production, but about the value of the trade. You simply don't make that trade straight up (giving him away). Shut down corners are much, much, much harder to find than RBs. MS has it right; you should never invest heavily at the RB position. Then you add in the 2nd and we paid the Broncos to take Bailey.

And no Bailey wasn't going anywhere, because he was franchised.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Champ would not have showed if he had been franchised and not traded. This goes beyond football and was a personal/family issue for him.

What I do know is we will never know, but every athlete that say the same thing always comes eventually shows.

Now I don't know is the whole family life impact. I had heard some rumors of infidelity on one side or the other, but that is common place in sports.

I am sad about this day, but not sad because Portis has been released. What makes me sad is the fact that, whilst I can acknowledge his achievements, and am grateful for his efforts on the field, I never really took Clinton into my heart. All the fluff and nonsense, the silly dressing up, the constant stream of public comments (often about things that should have remained private); this all made it difficult for me to like him. Added to that, I see him as the poster boy for all that was wrong about the Dan Snyder regime, when selected players were friends of the owner and became (at least in their minds) more important than other players.

I'm sorry Clinton - I won't miss you. And that makes me sad.

Oh, one other thing - I still think it's possible that he'll be back.

The rumor was that Champ's wife also heard the rumors and demanded the Champ leave town.

"The Rumor" was that he impregnated a WaPo photographer.
