I was excited too - I just feel like Marty would have inevitably done far better, but we'll never know.
I do think that he would have been better at picking players, trimming the fat, and getting more out of people than Spurrier.
Gibbs ain't gonna be exciting if he sticks with his pure ground attack like 82 rather than the air attack in 92. He grinds more than Schotty ever did.
Keep in mind Schotty had to deal with Snyder's mistaken pickups and the problems with the ego children Danny brought in. Don't get me wrong - I like Snyder and the fervor he brings to the team - I have been a huge supporter. I just think maybe we cut Schottenheimer off too soon, but that is hindsight, and therefore irrelevant.
I too thought Spurrier could succeed. I thought that his offense would bring a spark, but little did we know that his offense was designed to take advantage of his recruiting advantages vs. other college teams. Bringing in 4-5 WR that are all better than average speed will test any college secondary - bar none. In the NFL where most of the DBs including safeties match up much better vs. WR it failed. We didn't and probably couldn't see it coming.
Anyway, all of this is just looking back and shaking my head I suppose.
