I'm not big on QB ratings, as they don't tell the entire story ... but Sanchez is 5th among the 12 post season QBs, eclipsed by only Favre, Brees, Rogers, and Warner.

That his yards aren't massive is a product of the run first offense of the Jets. But he's done what they need him to do, and he's a first year rookie.

And he's made less mistakes than Rivers, Brady, and Flacco in post season play.

I know, I know ... if the Jets had mighty Jason, they'd be a lock to win the super bowl ... yeah yeah, I understand.

I suppose Ray would argue that Campbell in the same situation with his much better numbers would somehow not make the playoffs, because he doesn't make the "team" better like Sanchez "obviously did" because we all know that the quarterback is the only position on the field.

You should stick to expressing your own opinions, and not trying to express mine.

My argument is that as a Rookie, he played well in several games and played poorly in others as should be expected. He had four games with multiple interceptions ... those 4 games accounted for 15 of his 20 ints. That's just growing pains with a rookie.

That you're trying to compare a raw rookie to a 5th year player speaks volumes about the 5th year player, and not a comparison I was making.

That Sanchez has improved throughout the year is a fact. That he's played well for a rookie with the pressure of playoffs is indisputable.

How well he progresses over the next two years is pure speculation, though I think it's safe to say he shows considerable promise.

That I think he'll be a better player in his second and third years than Campbell has been, is my opinion.

I still am glad he's not our QB - we already have a QB and we hopefully will find a really good one soon to go along with a decent offensive line that will also be here in the next couple of years

Sanchez is a good QB, but right now he's the worst of the 4 as far as I'm concerned - of course you could say he's the 4th best of the QBs that are left too

I apologize, this thread is just ridiculous, so its hard for me not to be a jerk when posting in it. There is no real way to say anything positive about mark sanchez at all so far. He is a rookie, he could get better, but he is probably hurting his team by being the starter.

Lol. You do realize the only person who brought up Jason Campbell in this thread is...you.

Fixated much?

Listen, Sanchez is in an ideal situation in NY. He has the best running game in the league, the best o-line in the league, a legit #1 in Cotchery, and the best defense in the league. He doesn't have to do a lot to win in NY; he just has to avoid making mistakes that kill the team. And even if he makes mistakes, his team is good enough to overcome them...just not when he throws 5 picks in a game like he did against Buffalo.

That's not the situation in DC. If you put him behind our offensive line, with our pathetic running game...#1) he'd likely die from being sacked so often; and #2) you'd ruin him for life from post-traumatic stress like we did with Ramsey.

While he may turn out to be very good, and I think he will...if we had picked him up last year...we would have ruined him. I'd have a hard time thinking that Sanchez in DC makes for a better team than Orakpo plus whomever we get with the #4 pick in this draft...plus whomever else the Jets wanted (it was their #1, their #2 (which we didn't have...Thanks to you, Jason Taylor), and 3 players off their team).

If we were close to being a legit contender, like the Jets are now, you make the trade, and coddle the kid. We need...a LOT of help lol.

And just so we're clear, I have no doubts that Sanchez will be a better QB than Campbell. Just like I have no doubts that Sanchez would have been ruined in DC.

A lot of people are calling Sanchez a bust... sure his TEAM is winning, but are they winning despite him?

It's an insider article, so I can't get it, but as it's been run in to the ground, you can't judge a QB in 1 season.

And I agree with Pulp. Sanchez woulda been a little puddle on the field. he wouldn't have held up behind our line. I don't know many QBs who would have.

Here's the relevant part of the article. Written by one of the writers from Football Outsiders.

The New York Jets' stalwart defense has carried rookies at both quarterback and running back to within one game of the Super Bowl; the Jets had better make this playoff run count, however, because while Shonn Greene looks like he'll be a good player for years, there are signs of a bleak future ahead for Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez is already the youngest quarterback since at least 1960 to win two games in a single postseason; he'll be the youngest to win three or four if the Jets' hot streak continues. His performance in San Diego, however, was historically inept. Sanchez threw for only 100 yards on 23 attempts, a woeful average of 4.4 yards per attempt. Since 1978, 119 quarterbacks have thrown at least 10 passes in a playoff game and averaged less than 5 yards per attempt; only 29 of them, including Sanchez, were lucky enough to win.

Greene, meanwhile, is only the fifth rookie to post two 100-yard games in the playoffs. Coincidentally, three of the other four men to pull this off -- Jamal Lewis, Curt Warner and Ickey Woods -- tore their ACLs the next season, and combined to play only three games in their sophomore seasons. The fourth, Duane Thomas, saw a promising career ruined by contract squabbles with the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.

Two games, though, is a small sample size. Looking at the 16-game regular season will give us a better idea of how Sanchez and Green have played. We can put their statistics into context by using Football Outsiders' similarity scores. Similarity scores were first invented by baseball expert Bill James and have since been used by countless analysts in multiple sports. At Football Outsiders, our methodology analyzes not just yards and touchdowns -- but also age and experience. We usually examine players in two- or three-year chunks, although we obviously can't do that for Sanchez and Greene.

For Sanchez, we're limiting our sample to players who were first-year starters. Now, regardless of which team each Football Outsiders writer cheers for, we are all football fans first; we want to see good young players succeed. So imagine our horror when the closest match for Sanchez turned out to be current Raiders punch line JaMarcus Russell.

In 2008, Russell completed 198 of 368 passes for 2,423 yards and 13 TDs (with 8 INTs). This season, Sanchez went 196-for-364 for 2,444 yards, 12 TDs and 20 INTs. Their completion percentages were identical (ahhh!): both at 53.8 percent.

Russell started 15 games at age 23 in 2008; Sanchez started 15 games at age 23 in 2009. The biggest difference is in interceptions, where Sanchez was significantly worse, throwing 20 interceptions to Russell's eight.

Other players similar to Sanchez give little reason for hope. The best of the bunch are Jim Everett and Neil Lomax. There are also former first-rounders like Byron Leftwich, Tim Couch and Matt Leinart -- and then you get guys like Tony Banks, Scott Campbell and Billy Joe Tolliver.

Obviously, this is one year, and Sanchez was drafted higher than most of these comparable players for a reason. He has more potential. But except for the wild-card win against Cincinnati, he really hasn't shown it.

Ouch.

I'm surprised that "A lot of people are calling Sanchez a bust ..." - the kid's a rookie and he's a bust? I'd suggest you not pay any attention to whomever all these "people" are

that's really stupid

but I'm still glad he's not here - we are better off getting somebody really good :D

I am actually happy we did not try harder...he struggled big time this year and even though his team is in the playoffs and winning, I believe he is still far from being a good NFL Qb. I believe he is no bust, but no good Qb yet... just a result of a very good team that surrounds him ..for his evaluation we have to wait a couple of years..

Still glad we took Orakpo.
Yes Sanchez has a lot of potential. He shows plenty flashes of brilliance.
No way do I regret us getting Orkapo. Love Osack pro!
